NOTES Ronald and Ruth Moir, the Moir Fortepiano Duo, took their undergraduate musical training at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Following graduation they were awarded grants from both the Canada Council and the Manitoba Arts Council which allowed them 3 years of study in the UK with pianist and fortepianist Joan Davies. At this time they became convinced their major interest would be performing as a duo on the historical instruments, and immediately set about crafting a musical identity in tune with Vienna of 1800.

In terms of aristocratic purity and effortless technical poise only Sergei Rachmaninoff and the tragically short-lived Dinu Lipatti can be mentioned in the same breath. Yet there are those who remain resolutely unmoved by the great Italian, blaming him for the relatively cool interpretative stance favoured by a multitude of contemporary pianists, most notoriously his erstwhile pupil, Maurizio Pollini.

Sheli Nan
Has devoted her life to music.
Composer, author, and teacher, Nan plays the piano, harpsichord, and percussion instruments. She blends jazz and European classical sounds BIOGRAPHY
A pioneer of the New Acoustic Movement, she brought the harpsichord to new age music. She has performed in rock concerts, jazz clubs, and chamber recitals in the United States, South America, and Europe. Her own "Bach Boogie Blues," which she composed and performed on the piano and the harpsichord, fuses the three title elements of this piece.
Nan performed for three years with The World Connection, a Nigerian band. She trained with Vivian Rivkin of the Juilliard School of Music; innovative jazz great Cecil Taylor, and Laurette Goldberg of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
The Music Studio, Nan's teaching studio, is her laboratory for her musical and educational ideas. Her dedication to teaching and her expertise in composition and performance have led to a well-integrated teaching perspective. She has refined her method with the San Francisco Symphony Adventures in Music program.
One music reviewer called Nan "a fierce talent" and commented, "Sheli Nan is not a jazz artist, not a classical artist. She is unclassifiable."

[To Bob Heath] In my opinion the text of "Bist Du bei mir" is not odd! It is about love which does not end with the dead of the beloved.

For the first time since I started doing year-end Top 10 lists, Seiji Ozawa and the BSO top the 10, with a program consisting of the overture to one children's opera (Humperdinck's ) and an entire children's opera (Ravel's ) surrounding a work of spiritual and artistic maturity (Mahler's five
Most welcome guest
Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta (outclassing Ozawa on his own musical turf), Brahms First Piano Concerto in an extraordinary collaboration with the elegant (but astounding) Krystian Zimerman), and symphonies by Bruckner and Haydn might have topped the Top 10 in any other year.
Best choral event
Craig Smith's Emmanuel Music the Boston group most dedicated to Bach waited for its 25th anniversary to do the greatest of all choral works, Bach's St. Matthew Passion . Smith's flexible and heartfelt conducting, the amazing orchestral ensemble (with notable solo playing by concertmaster Danielle Madden and oboist Peggy Pearson), the magnificent chorus, and especially thrilling performances by young Stephen Salters, Frank Kelley, and the glowing Sanford Sylvan as Jesus made it all worth the wait.
Best opera production
Stephen Wadsworth's bourgeois-tization of Handel's heroic Xerxes (Boston Lyric Opera) may not have been the most profound realization of the score, but Lorraine Hunt's singing and Craig Smith's conducting certainly were, and countertenor David Daniels made another outstanding impression. In production values, this handsome borrowed production also rose above the checkered record of our only continuing opera company.

Member: ASCAP, American Composers Forum, American Music Center

Media agent: Donel Young
Biographical Summary
Elodie Lauten has been described as a seminal figure, one of the leaders of the postminimalist movement (20th Century American Music, Schirmer, 1997), "a force on the experimental music scene" (Fanfare, Spring 98). Recordings have been released by o.o. Discs, Nonsequitur, Tellus, Polygram/Point, Lovely Music, Silenzio, Frog Peak and New Tone. Lauten has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, Meet the Composer, and commissions from Lincoln Center, The Soho Baroque Opera, The Queen's Chamber Band, The Lark Ascending, Elinor Coleman Dance Company, and David Hockney, to name a few. Shortly thereafter, Lauten came to New York City - indeed a cultural Mecca, much as so many young American artists had flocked to England and France in the Twenties. She was befriended by American poet Allen Ginsberg, whose purchase of a Farfisa organ for her dramatically changed the course of her musical career, exposing her to the possibilities of music produced electronically. Ginsberg also introduced her to Eastern religions, including Buddhism.

http://www.eroica.com/jn-reviews.html
Stereophile , June 1996:
June de Toth, a Hungarian-American pianist whose teachers include Gulda and Firkusny, presents a nicely varied selection of the composer's piano works. Her rhythmic verve, supplemented by lots of drive, is especially good in the dances, and one notices, especially in softer passages, that her tonal and dynamic sensitivity serves Bart—k particularly well. The third of the Dirges (Vol.1, track 17) is especially gripping, as is the atmospheric rendering of the final movement of the Op.14 Suite in Vol.2. The piano pickup is warm and intimate. -Igor Kipnis Peter Murano of Classical Net:
Review of The Week by Robert Moore, Musical Planet:
It's really too bad that the music of Bart—k is such a big secret to most people. Granted, Bart—k did write (gasp) dissonant music from time to time, but what marvelously tantalizing dissonance it is. How sad that scary movies have provided most people with their only real exposure to music of this variety - and then they weren't even paying attention because they were waiting for The Slasher to come out from the shadows and dispatch somebody with their usual crimson Hollywood aplomb. The pianist for these 2 CDs, Hungarian-American June De Toth has made history with this ambitious series of recordings - as she is the only woman to ever undertake the daunting task of recording the complete solo piano music of Bart—k. And it's just as well, because her performances of these works shows a keen insight into the texture and mechanics of Bart—k's often difficult piano compositions. Her crystalline and lean interpretations strike me as extremely appropriate, and they make for a set of recordings which, aside from their otherwise historical significance, are WELL worth going out 'n getting ahold of. These recordings ROCK!
