Summer Suggestions, 2001
Igor Kipnis
June 2001 Thinking of July 4th, the most obvious summer blockbuster among the usual plethora of classical releases over the last few months is an all-Tchaikovsky, Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops Orchestra compilation that includes the ubiquitous 1812 Overture Capriccio Italien Marche Slav , Festival Coronation March, and orchestral excerpts from Eugen Onegin and Mazeppa (Telarc CD-80541). Everything is very well performed, if not perhaps with the ultimate in excitement and vitality. The Much as I enjoyed the Tchaikovsky viscerally in the normal CD version, I would opt as an orchestral standout for a marvelously exciting Stravinsky Fire Bird Firebird is sensational, both as a wonderfully colorful and detailed exposition of this score but also has an example of CD sonics at their best, and this time the bass department is not slighted. Try the "Katchei’s Infernal Dance" at track 20. That will set your speakers to working. The CD is definitely of demonstration quality. Chandos in England has released the popular London Symphony The Banks of Green Willow The Planets Rite of Spring Le Sacre , which was used for rehearsing the original ballet back in 1913. This had been recorded before, notably by Michael Tilson Thomas and Ralph Grierson for Angel, as well as others, but the present recording by the Turkish pianist, Fazil Say (pronounced sigh), in effect "orchestrates" the work for the piano, both normal and prepared (creating unusual sounds), using a computer-controlled Bösendorfer, multi-tracking, superimposition, and synchronization (Teldec 81041). The result has extraordinary clarity, rather less for the sake of color than for the explicating the different difficult rhythms and intricate textures. The CD, incidentally, also doubles as a CD-ROM (Mac/PC) with Say playing Stravinsky, Gershwin, and Bach for some five minutes of ostentatiously artsy video. I reviewed his first disc of Mozart for

Since his debut in 1959, Igor Kipnis has become one of the world's best-known harpsichordists, with more than fifty solo recordings in his discography. He has also performed and recorded on the antique fortepiano. Readers of the many magazines for which he has written will also know of his long-standing interest in romantic piano literature and its great performers. In 1995, Kipnis heard Karen Kushner's acclaimed recordings of the Chopin Mazurkas, released by Connoisseur Society. Shortly afterward the two met and expressed their admiration for each others' playing. They made their debut as a performing Duo later that year, and have since performed in in more than a dozen states and in Europe and South America. The recordings on the debut CD, entitled "Four Hands," derive from these performances. The rare performance ofBrahms's

Passing of Igor Kipnis
By Albert Petrak
http://people.mags.net/
As one who followed his career with close attention over a period of the last forty years, I will add that he is now, and will continue to be, sorely missed. He was always optimistic, outgoing, vastly knowledgeable and willing, always to share with others his wide-ranging interests. Ave atque vale, Maestro. Albert M. Moir Fortepiano Duo (Continuo 1998) Conversation with Igor Kipnis The Early Piano Of Fortepianos and Fortepianists
Ronald Moir a conversation with Igor Kipnis Since his debut in 1959, Igor Kipnis has had a very active career across North and South America, Europe (East and West) Israel and Australia. Prolific in the recording field, be has 72 albums to his credit, 54 of which are solo. Among the honors be has received are 6 "Grammy' Nominations, 3 "Record of the Year" Awards from Stereo Review, the 1969 Deutsche Scballplatten Prize, and the 1988 Gold Star Award from the Italian periodical Musica. Keyboard Magazine named him "Best HarPsicbordist" in 1978, 1979, and 1980 and "Best Classical Keyboardist" in 1982 and 1986. Mr. Kipnis had just returned from an extended tour of California, Oregon, Texas and New England when we spoke in December 1991. We discussed the perils of touring, audience development, and his latest recordings on the Chesky label, a New York firm. One is an all Vivaldi set which includes the Four Seasons, a flute concerto, and his own reconstruction of a harpsichord concerto. These are performed by Members of the Connecticut Early Music Festival with Igor Kipnis directing from the keyboard, and will be released later this year. Also, just released by Chesky (June '92) is a recording of 15 Scarlatti Sonatas made using 5 different Hubbard + Broeknian harpsichords. Hazards of Touring My recent concert at Nashua, N.H. was one of my more -horrendous experiences. I was told the concert org-anizers had settled on the Campus Centre of the college as a venue instead of the smaller library. This was probably a better choice as libraries are acoustically not all that great. When I got there I found the campus centre was in fact the cafeteria!!

When I was a student at Yale University's School of Music in the 1950s, I once attended a faculty party where harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick reminisced about his errant youth as a pianist before he fell in love with the harpsichord and its literature - it was a time during which he said that he had a great admiration for the flashy virtuoso music of Liszt. We dared him to play something by Liszt, and he finally obliged by going to the piano and playing the Sixth Hungarian Rhapsody. At first he had us in stitches with his parody of the exaggerated excesses of the virtuoso pianist, but by the slow middle section the playing had become totally serious, and the repeated octave windup of the finale was a knockout.
Thus I was not surprised to learn a few years ago that Igor Kipnis, after over forty years as one of the preeminent harpsichordists of our time, had finally come out of the closet and revealed his inner soul as one totally dedicated to and extremely knowledgeable about the great body of piano literature of the nineteenth century, and more importantly, the great legacy of recorded performances of all the distinguished pianists of recent history.

Connoisseur Society CD 4191 (CD only). Patricia A. Duciaume, eng.; E. Alan Silver, prod. D?D. TT: 59:26 Petrouchka Rhapsody in Blue in a solo piano treatment seems a less than ideal way of savoring Gershwin's ubiquitous piece, the colorful orchestral effects having been absorbed into the keyboard part, let me hasten to assure you that I have never heard a more effective or stylish treatment than this one here. This may not be a first recording of the solo version of the work (Norman Krieger recorded it very well just a few years ago on Stradivari Classics, and quite a few others are available). But the Second Rhapsody, in Buechner's own transcription, is, in fact, claimed as a first. The piece, despite the effects of numerous champions, has never achieved the popularity of its predecessor, and this in spite of Gershwin's own enthusiasm for it. Buechner's advocacy has the merit of considerable panache, though, personally, and on entirely musical grounds, I have never been roused to great enthusiasm for the piece.
