Distinguished Black College Graduates
And Their Alma Maters
Here's a useful resource from Black Excel for counselors and educators working with African-American students. This is a partial list of graduates who have gotten a lot of media attention, generally because of "spotlight" careers. Many have excelled in sports, music or entertainment. Some have made historic contributions. Of course, many of our "stars" are unsung. An extended list of their success stories in academia, science, business and beyond could fill a library. This is only a reference starter. Note: some folks have degrees from two schools. (*denotes an Historically Black College.)

Purdue News Weekly Summary
March 1, 2004 This digest contains summaries of the following stories from Purdue News Service and Agricultural Communication Service. All these stories, and more, are available on the World Wide Web RESEARCH NEWS AND SPECIAL REPORTS Judges cast ballots for election-themed Rube Goldberg machine Winning team celebrates
The votes are in, and the Purdue Society of Manufacturing Engineers' team scored a win Saturday (2/28) in the 22nd annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. Employing a theme that incorporated elections and hanging chads, the team used 70 steps – three-and-a-half times the required number – to complete the task of selecting, marking and casting a paper ballot. "We didn't plan on having that many steps," said Andrew Nymeyer, a senior in the School of Technology and co-chair of the winning team. "A week ago, we only had about 30, but every time something didn't work, we had to add a couple more to fix the problem. It got a little out of hand." Purdue chemists 'put the twist' on protein building block Purdue scientists have made an important biological molecule "swing," in work that might clarify the process by which proteins fold as well as lead to new approaches to drug development and computer memory. Using lasers to initiate and probe the folding process, a group including chemist Timothy Zwier have precisely determined the energies needed to twist tryptamine, a molecule with several flexible "hinges" that bears a close resemblance to an amino acid, the basis of proteins. And though tryptamine forms only a tiny portion of a protein, a better understanding of this close chemical relative to serotonin and melatonin could provide insights into these other substances' effect on the brain.
