She began piano lessons at age 4 with Anna Artobolevskaya and gave her first recital at age 6 in Kiev, Ukraine. In 1979, Khovanskaya entered the Central Special Music School of the Moscow Conservatory, where she studied with Anna Artobolevskaya and Alexander Mndoyantz. In 1980, Khovanskaya played a concert within the framework of The Fall Festival in Leningrad. She traveled to the city of Volgograd in 1981 to play Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D Major with the Volgograd Symphony Orchestra. In 1982, she played a concert for the Russian Space Center in the Moscow Region. While studying at the Moscow Central Special Music School, she gave numerous concerts in the MCSMS Hall and in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. In 1987, Khovanskaya was invited to play Arensky’s Fantasia on the Theme of Ryabinin for piano and orchestra with the Russian Folk Symphony Orchestra under Nicolay Nekrasov on the USSR TV. He began to study music at age 7 with Elena Khvorostova of the Tambov Music School and gave his first public performance at age 8. While studying at The Tambov Music School, Sviridov won many school, city and regional contests for young pianists, including the Tambov Region Annual Contest for Young Pianists (1982-1987). In 1987, Sviridov entered Rachmaninov Music College in Tambov, where he studied with Natalia Kolpakova. He received first prize in numerous city and regional competitions, such as the Tchaikovsky Regional Piano Contest (1988), the Mussorgsky Regional Competition for Young Pianists (1989), the Bartok Regional Contest (1989), the Kabalevsky Regional Competition for Young Pianists in Kuibyshev (1990), and the Tambov Annual Contest for Young Pianists (1988-1991). In 1991, he won first prize in the Regional Contest of Young Pianists in Kuznetsk, Russia. This is an excellent, concise article about this famous lady and she forms the inspiration for this month's Editorial Musings. Nigel Nettheim has expanded his offerings about Maryla Jonas into an index listing several rare articles about her life. This past month two readers (see Letters to the Editor ) introduced me to two great pianists from the past who have been neglected: Etelka Freund (b. Hungary, 1879; d. Zurich, May 27, 1977) and Lubka Kolessa (b. Lvov, Ukraine, May 19,1904; d. Toronto, Canada, 1997).
