Freddy Kempf - Biography
Now established as one of the most sought-after young pianists in the world, Freddy Kempf was born in London in 1977. He began playing the piano at the age of four and first came to national prominence aged eight when he performed Mozart's Piano Concerto K.414 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, while international attention soon followed with performances of the same concerto in Germany. In 1987 he won the first National Mozart Competition and in 1992 became the youngest ever winner of the biennial BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition subsequently appearing in concerts and on television throughout the world, and working with many of the greatest conductors. His award of third prize in the 1998 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow provoked protests from the audience and an outcry in the Russian press, which described him as "The Hero of the Competition", and his unprecedented popularity with Russian audiences has been reflected in several sold-out concerts and numerous television broadcasts of his performances. His triumphant return visit to the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire in April 1999 for solo and concerto appearances prompted the headline "Young pianist conquers Moscow" in the International Herald Tribune. Recent concerts have included dates at London's Wigmore Hall, New York's 92nd Street "Y", the Salzburg Mozarteum, Cheltenham Festival, La Roque d'Anthéron Festival, Milan Conservatoire, Hamburg's Musikhalle, the Zurich Tonhalle and a month-long tour of Japan, which included solo and orchestral concerts culminating in a recital Tokyo's Suntory Hall that was broadcast on radio and television.

Review: "...[the disc's] contents confirm Kempf's stature as one of the most exciting talents of any age now before the public...
Rachmaninoff's Second Sonata ... Kempf here chooses the longer version (he prefers the "spontaneous inspiration" of the original) and brings it to life in a performance which recalls Stravinsky's comment to a boorish listener who complained that the length of Schubert's later sonatas put him to sleep. "Yes," said Stravinsky. "But when you awake, you think you are in heaven." The range of Kempf's performance is established in the Sonata's opening pages. The opening chords are molten gold and granite, balanced by chordal passagework ethereal in its lightness and timbral variety. Kempf has a generosity of spirit that enables him to play at the extreme ranges of dynamics and tempo without sacrificing either forward momentum or structural unity. Compared to Horowitz's titanic interpretation of the work (the other great performance on record), I find Kempf more lyrical and refreshingly un-neurotic. This is not to say that there is any lack of virtuosity. The youthful impetuosity of the last movement is startling in its perfectly controlled wildness and passion.

Bronchial spasms from the crowd were rather exaggerated in between movements.) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored by the Singapore Symphonia Co. Ltd

A Flying Inkpot special courtesy of our UK Inkpotter Marc Bridle This article first appeared in MusicWeb (April 2000) Meeting Freddy Kempf can be a humbling experience. Not yet 23, he is already well on his way to becoming a pianist of considerable greatness (his new Rachmaninov disc is very fine indeed). The paradox is that he is also so incredibly normal and charming, at least by the standards we have come to expect of our musicians. I arrive early for our interview (which overruns) - enough for other artists to throw a tantram or otherwise. Not Freddy, who is happy to start early and carry on. He makes coffee, and slides around the sitting room in socks. His mobile rings, he apologises. He hates hotels and flying, and likes nothing more than driving back from a concert late at night - even if it is several hundred miles away from his North London home. Home is where he loves to be. And he now has a parking space for his car, a passion he mentions often (even if his motor insurance is staggeringly expensive - "It's because musicians work where drinks are sold"). Nowadays he prefers to have the TV on as background music, and relaxes by playing computer games (strategy and role play mostly). Gadgets and the Internet (where he has recently started using Tesco's internet service when he fell ill) are much more his métier nowadays. Just normal, even if his pianism isn't. His love affair with Russia is well known (his young wife is Russian), and his Rachmaninov disc is in part a reflection of this. The opening work is the great Second Sonata, a titanic piece that Kempf has recorded in the original 1913 version. He has played both the 1913 version and the 1931 rewrite in near equal measure, but his views on the merits of the original are compelling.

[67:12] full-price by Marc Bridle Marc interviews Freddy Kempf in the UK Following the acclaim of his first disc, Freddy Kempf plays Schumann (BIS 960), the young British pianist has now turned his attention to Rachmaninov. This is in many ways a finer disc, displaying a touch that is mercurial and a tone that gleams like a golden fleece. The sonorities are as fiery as the Phlegethon as Kempf steers a course through Rachmaninov's opulent sound-world. These are performances that float notes as gracefully as any and mix dizzying virtuosity with tempered poetry. The Second Sonata is extremely fine, and Kempf is quite incandescent in his handling of the glittering figuration. The opening chords are volcanic, erupting with a chaotic cloak of colour that mixes vermilion's with scorched yellows. The colours do not so much collide, as coalesce, as the densely chromatic decoration moves almost laterally into passages of the most intimate beauty. This is first and foremost a kaleidoscopic interpretation, one that, whilst perhaps lacking the monumental scale that Horowitz brought to the work, seeks refuge in the lyricism of the Rachmaninov of the Second Concerto. In fact, although Kempf plays the original 1913 version one is constantly aware of him looking back farther to the beginning of the century, and the

It's a cliche to talk of young artists bringing youthful vision to a performance, but there is something special, a raw vitality, in young pianist Freddy Kempf's playing. This performance of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, part of the RPO's Beethoven-Stravinsky series, didn't find him at his peak technically, but each phrase was compulsive listening. Beneath the sublimely enjoyable surface of the Fourth Concerto, there's a great deal for a pianist to get stuck into. Kempf was keen to bring the inner voices to our attention; occasionally he made them so prominent that the outer semiquaver lines were too soft. Yet his dancing melodic lines and throwaway scales were a delight. Daniele Gatti, still a dominant force rather than just a cue-giver, drew a soft bloom from the string section for their first entry. A palpable sense of tension built up at the end of the second movement; in the closing Rondo the violas made their two-part melody into a moment of glory.
