ON THE JOB The Keys to Carnegie Hall Winning the Van Cliburn gold medal gets your foot in the door. by Ginny McCormick
Every so often Jon Nakamatsu has to pinch himself. Is he really a concert pianist touring the globe and performing at Carnegie Hall? An artist whose work has been described by a New York Times in company with a story on James Michener? Nakamatsu says he was stunned by the standing ovations he received during the two-week competition in Texas. Fans gave him a toy armadillo for luck. Fort Worth Star-Telegram The prize opened doors. Besides winning $20,000 in cash and a $10,000 wardrobe allowance, Cliburn medalists are sent on a two-year concert tour in the United States and Europe. A public reception follows in the theater foyer. Tickets for the Kasman concert are $10. An advance ticket package for all concerts also is available for $25, with individual tickets available at the door. Kasman, who captured the silver medal in his first U.S. appearance, is "dazzling," according to showcase director Joel Harrison. "He is, perhaps, the greatest pianist around," the MSU music education professor added. Kasman, artist-in-residence at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, took the top prize in the 1992 Arthur Rubinstein Competition and a second-place award at the 1995 International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. In addition to presenting recitals in France and Israel, he has appeared with the Orchestra of Radio France, Athens State Orchestra and the Moscow State Orchestra. Kasman's MSU concert will include Mussorkgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," Haydn's Sonata in G Major, Prokofiev's "Four Pieces from Romeo and Juliet, Op. 75," and Stravinsky's "Trois Movements de Petrouchka."

Van Cliburn Competition Finals Live on the Web
FORT WORTH, Texas, 2 June 1997
- The jury of the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition has selected six pianists from 12 semi-finalists to advance to the final round of the competition.
The six finalists are: Filippo Gamba, 28 (Italy); Jan Gottlieb Jiracek, 24 (Germany); Yakov Kasman, 30 (Russia); Jon Nakamatsu, 28 (United States); Aviram Reichert, 25 (Israel); Katia Skanavi, 25 (Russia). In the final round of the competition held 5 - 7 June, each pianist will perform two concerti of his or her choice (subject to approval by the artistic committee) with the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the American conductor James Conlon.

Winning Cliburn contest doesn't always bring fame LA Times-Washington Post News Service Quick. What do Ralph Votapek, Vladimir Viardo and Simone Pedroni have in common? All won first prize in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, enjoyed bursts of fame and now languish in those fields of obscurity known as ''whatever happened to ... ?'' This Sunday in Fort Worth, the Cliburn will crown a first-prize winner for the 10th time since the competition began in 1962. The lucky pianist will win $20,000 in cash, plus concert engagements and recording opportunities worth almost $250,000. And the second-and third-prize winners, as well as the three other pianists named as finalists late Monday, will scarcely come away empty-handed in this richest of all international music competitions. But there's one thing the six finalists cannot expect to win Sunday evening: lasting fame. If the law of averages holds, the lucky young man or woman who is the winner - five Cliburn finalists are male, one female - will be forgotten in a few years, another casualty laid to rest in the crowded graveyard of Cliburn winners. That only one first-prize winner in nine Cliburns - Radu Lupu (1966) - has gone on to a major international career does not call the judgments of the contests' juries in doubt. It is merely to say that it has been a long time since winning a major international competition was a predictor of lasting fame or even of a substantial performing career. There are simply so many competitions - literally hundreds - that a first prize, even in a competition as prestigious as the Cliburn, has ceased to have much meaning.
