Symphony Hires Planned Giving Manager
The University of Nebraska at Omaha granted Omaha Symphony music director Victor Yampolsky an honorary doctor of letters degree at commencement, May 10. For seven seasons Yampolsky has served as music director of the Omaha Symphony, raising the artistic level of the orchestra through his work on the symphony's MasterWorks and Chamber series. "I am able to accept this honor in part because of the knowledge that I share with the musicians and the public in the Midlands," said Yampolsky. "But the honor reflects on those in this city and in my own life from whom I have learned so much." "I'm lucky to be here in this very special community, which combines deep understanding of classical music with modesty and unselfishness."

Piano players gather at Colorado College

World-renowned piano soloist Helene Wickett will be at Colorado College Aug. 13-17. So you think you've got what it takes to be a famous pianist, if only you had the time? Well, now you've got some company. When Amateur Pianists International (API) presents its second annual Celebration of the Amateur Pianist at Colorado College from Aug. 13 to Aug. 17, some of the world's finest recreational players will come together for five days of competition, classes and camaraderie. The celebration, which features the Third Rocky Mountain Amateur Piano Competition (in association with the Van Cliburn Foundation), is "more than just a piano contest," said Chuck Cabell, who along with Gregory Adams founded API in 2001. "In recent years, a number of competitions for amateur pianists have sprung up, but we try to keep ours unique making it a complete celebration." To accomplish this, API has invited two internationally renowned pianists, Helene Wickett and Yakov Kasman, to teach a Master Class open to both the 22 contest participants and the general public, which will focus on stylistic and motivational techniques for amateur players. Kasman and Wickett will also perform individual recitals during the event.

Recorded Studio Arco Diva Domovina, Prague, November 2001. In DSCH No. 14, I applauded a reissued recording of Shostakovich's Quintet by the Talich Quartet and pianist Miroslav Langer, a reading of uncommon darkness and emotional intensity (Praga PR 7254042). Of the players who delivered that 1976 performance, only Jan Talich remains in today's Talich Quartet, yet the new account clearly builds upon many of the elements that made the earlier one succeed. Take, for example, the third movement, which the former Talich players twisted into a decidedly sarcastic utterance. Now this Scherzo is even more caustically angular. As previously, the second movement contains a real crisis of the soul at its core, bracketed by passages of quiet fragility, but here these are made even more vulnerable in their expanded space. It is in such drawn out and deliberate tempi that the current performance most clearly distinguishes itself from its predecessor, and indeed the rest of the competition. At 33:35, this version is one of the slowest ever recorded, taking nearly 5 minutes longer to have its say than did the Talich/Langer interpretation. As one would predict, this underlines the gloomier aspects of the opus. In the

Current Reno Weather Music Reviews Jan 25, 2000 - Full Throttle Performances and Rapture Thrill at the Reno Phil By Jack Neal "Damn the torpedoes" isn't conductor Barry Jekowsky's main aim for the Reno Philharmonic, but "full speed ahead" might be.
Whether in rehearsal or performance, Jekowsky seems to have everyone convinced that what they do musically while he's around is the most important event in the entire universe. A white-hot intensity permeates Jekowsky's work, not to mention a spirit of adventure and discovery.
Tuesday's (1/25/2000) program of Bernstein's jaunty Three Dance Episodes from "On the Town," Grieg's lush Piano Concerto in A Minor, rapturously played by Russian pianist Yakov Kasman, and Tchaikovsky's fateful, often smashingly full throttle Symphony No. 4, was but another of the maestro's exciting mixes of highly popular and listenable symphonic music.
The biggest plus, of course, is that these concerts don't just look exciting on paper, they're exciting to hear. The Tchaikovsky might very will have been the fastest performance of the Fourth in captivity.
The "On The Town" lyric, "New York, New York, it's a helluva town" catches the spirit of Bernstein's dance episodes, but no more so than the devil-may-care Jekowsky and the Reno Philhamonic brought to these thoroughly American pieces. The syncopated maestro and his phrase-bending orchestra met the offbeat Mr. Bernstein on mutual home turf and it was a terrific blending of homegrown American talent. Irreverence was the name of the game for these bawdy, loose-jointed pieces. Add the pizzazz of with-it soloing from within the orchestra's ranks - the blowzy bluesiness of trumpeter Paul Lenz, to name one - and all the Bernstein lacked was the superlative dancing of Gene Kelly and Ann Miller. With lots of brassy edge, smart alecky woodwinds, shimmering strings with velvety sheen and percussion with rhythm to spare, the Bernstein episodes were dazzlers.

Current Reno Weather Music Reviews Dec 5, 1999 - A Spirited "Spirit of the Season" with the Reno Phil and Company By Jack Neal Experiencing its first "Spirit of the Season" concert produced by Barry Jekowsky, the Reno Philharmonic's new conductor and music director, a jam-packed Pioneer Center crowd got a glimpse of what its new conductor can do blending good-to-great music with great fun. Brilliantly, if a tad away from perfectly, is what I'd call it; a thoroughly delightful evening of inspired good times with Reno's increasingly splendid symphony orchestra.
There is a certain lavish C.B. DeMille flair about a Jekowsky production that has the glitz of Hollywood without lapsing into Tinsel Town's penchant for glitter over substance. While not quite a cast of thousands, by the time the University of Nevada, Reno Choral Union, the Nevada Opera Youth Chorus, and the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra joined forces with the Reno Philharmonic for "Let There Be Peace On Earth," the concert took on epic movie proportions. The sing-a-long that wrapped things up only heightened the massiveness of the event, actually pushing the concert into a-cast-of-thousands realm, making it all as thrilling to hear as it was heart-warming and just plain exhilarating to experience.
Not only did the concert have audience appeal in spades, it had the added advantage of promoting family values a la the Reno Philharmonic and its community of support groups. With all the piece's spirited nuances tucked flamboyantly in place, the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Kevin Price, brought off Prokofiev's "Troika" from the composer's Lieutenant Kiji Suite with dash and style. The terrific work of Kris Engstrom, conductor of the Nevada Opera Youth Chorus, was put on enviable display when her charges went through their paces - a buoyant "Walking on Air," a stunningly pristine "Carol of the Bells" - with the poise of old pros and the effervescence of youth.

The Flint Hills will be alive with the "Sound of Music" and others during McCain Auditorium's performance series. Student tickets for individual shows range from $7.50 to $20, depending on the show. But Marketing Director Thom Jackson said students should take advantage of the special season-ticket rate, which includes all 15 shows for $75 an average of $5 per performance. The student tickets are for lower-balcony or orchestra-level seats, Jackson said, and are a good bargain for students interested in experiencing different sorts of entertainment. A large portion of McCain's budget comes from student privilege fees, and Director Richard Martin said the series produces an excellent return on students' investment.
Courtesy art "It's very important for students to see and to hear what we have here," Martin said. "It makes the university a more interesting place to be." Because students play such a large role in funding McCain, they should be active in deciding what shows will be in the series, Jackson said.
