INKTRODUCTION. It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.

CHOO Hoey conductor OVERALL NOISE RATING: 1 (The orchestra was too loud for any coughing to be heard) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored by the Singapore Symphonia Co. Ltd by Adrian Tan Only upon the return of Conductor Emeritus Choo Hoey does the audience get treated to the likes of tonight's program. Van Cliburn Silver Medalist Yakov Kasman joins the SSO in the beautiful Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 in the first half of the program, followed by the daunting Symphony No. 11 "The year 1905" by Dmitri Shostakovich. High expectations abound from those who know the music. Surely, the SSO has come a long way to even dare attempt a repertoire such as this, a challenging program which will definitely test the musicians onstage to their fullest. A lingering thought at the back of one's mind is surely the heavy repertoire that might not bother the performers but the audience. Still, we keep an open mind for one of the season's most awaited concerts.

MANHATTAN The sounds of a classical piano performance will fill McCain Auditorium when acclaimed Russian pianist Yakov Kasman comes to Kansas State University for a performance later this month. Kasman, a native of the Russian city Orel, near Moscow, has plenty of pieces on his concert program for the Sept. 28 performance that will dazzle audiences, said Thom Jackson, marketing and development officer for McCain. Scheduled pieces include Pytor Illych Tchaikovsky's "Grand Sonata in G Major, Opus 37," Robert Schumann's "Waldszenen, Opus 82," Alexander Scriabin's "Eight Preludes: Opus 22 and 37" and Igor Stravinsky's "Petrushka." Kasman, who has recorded nine studio compact discs within the past few years, also manages to divide his time between working as a concert pianist and as an educator; he is an assistant professor of piano and artist-in-residence at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

The Monterey County Herald, Monday, November 16, 1998 Conductor Tamarkin
sets high standard By Barbara Rose Shuler
    Special to The Herald
The first lady set the bar high for the gentlemen Sunday afternoon as she guided the Monterey Symphony through an exhilarating performance of its second concert of the season at the Sunset Center in Carmel.
Kate Tamarkin, the first woman in the symphony's 52-year history to conduct a subscription concert, distinguished herself with the ability and sophistication to lead this orchestra to exciting new levels.
Tamarkin is one of seven candidates selected to audition this season for the position of the symphony's music director.
With five more conductors yet to audition, it's premature to begin guessing how the selection committee will vote, but out-dazzling Tamarkin will be quite a challenge.
She has established a reputation as an inspired and innovative conductor, winning acclaim for her years as music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the East Texas Symphony Orchestra.
She conducted two major works from the standard repertoire: Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Dvorak's lush Symphony No. 8 in G major.

...By any standard, its last Monterey Symphony concert of the season was a rip-roaring event equally divided between perennial favorites and something new.
Maestro Tamarkin began the afternoon by leading the orchestra through a stylish performance of Ravel's "Tombeau de Couperin."... The final two movements "Menuet" and "Rigaudon" made a terrific effect as the strings and winds played with considerable precision and charm.Raúl Melo. review...
