Declicked but otherwise unfiltered the deep groove whiskery burble soon sinks out of conscious hearing. The best filtering if we are not to lose something of ambience or tone is the filter the mind brings to bear. In the case of this disc the light crackle is in any event discreet - barely discernible. The Brahms pairing surprises with the presence of the fabled American pianist Kapell killed at the age of 31 in a plane crash and with the lieder pianist Gerald Moore (he also recorded the Rubbra Second Sonata with Sammons). In both sonatas Primrose is warmth and vigour personified. There is no blurring of phrasing and while this accent on punctuation and 'breathing' can, in other hands, seem over-emphatic or stilted, Primrose's approach and tone remains clear, humorous and virile. I cannot imagine Brahmsians being disappointed. In fact he strikes me as a sort of counterpart of Isaac Stern in his Sony recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto.

As to the eclectic assortment of works accompanying the Shostakovich, the Largo and Rondo of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto represent Kapell's first recording, made when he was a mere fourteen years of age. The 1937 recording shows its age, and it is not always possible to discern the finer points of Kapell's style, but his confidence is always apparent. Mussorgsky's Pictures come from lacquer discs and a preservation tape made of them, so the sound quality is very poor. The reading is characterful, though, and pianists and lay-listeners with a high tolerance for extraneous noise will find much of value. Though Kapell's live recital - just two years before his tragic death in a plane crash - of Busoni's transcription of Bach's Nun komm der Heiden Heiland was taken from shellac pressings too, the sound is infinitely better, and with playing of this ravishing beauty, it contributes towards making this disc a satisfying purchase for those with the ears to appreciate a distinctive pianistic personality.

Both of these gifted performers have achieved success in their pursuit of a performing career, and both possess that unique ability to communicate the emotional essence of a composition to the audience. Allow me to introduce you to one of the performers: pianist, Hsing-ay Hsu. She has graciously agreed to offer us a glimpse into her life and to provide us insight into the circumstances that have brought her to this stage of her career. Born in Beijing, Hsing-ay Hsu began her piano studies at age of 3. Her musical talent is not surprising given her rich musical heritage. Her mother, principle harpist of the National Opera, was her first teacher; after immigrating to the United States, she was taught by her father, a well-respected and renowned artist in China who performed for former President Nixon. She eventually began working with her uncle, Fei-Ping Hsu, Gold Medallist in the Arthur Rubinstein International Competition. "We worked a lot on tone and phrasing. His musical expectations inspired my technique to move into unknown territory. Every technical exercise was in service to communicating musical intent. As I was constantly asked to imagine more contrast and more nuances, I began to develop more color in my playing and a musical conviction that comes from careful study."

She is one of the pianists of venture, the other being Amy Rubin (who also is a composer). There is no doubt that Laimon is a sensitive and forceful artist, with lots of skill and imagination, the way she treats the two pieces on this disc. Aaron Copland Piano Fantasy the Louisville Orchestra for a piano concerto that would be premiered by nowadays cult-dubbed late pianist William Kapell . However, the commission never reached its completion, and ultimately Kapell Nonetheless, Copland commenced the work, molding it into a solo piano work, which he dedicated to the Kapell Juilliard School of Music Aaron Copland found himself indulged in a pretty tough feat. He explains: The piece was not ready for the Juilliard anniversary.
