He won the silver medal in the International Georges Enesco Competition, first prize in the Charleston Symphony and San Francico Symphony young artists competition, Juilliard's Edward Steuermann Memorial Prize, and a grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation-all in one season(1969-1970). He has been an invited guest artist at the Festival d'Automne in Paris, Seville's Great Interpreters Cycle, the UNESCO Festival of International Artists at Monte Carlo, the Bucharest Philharmonic's Bach/Beethoven/Brahms Festival, and the Hong Kong Symphony. He has performed under such conductors as Michael Tilson Thomas, Josef Krips, and Leon Fleisher. He has been on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music since 1971. John O'Conor Verdi String Quartet Violin Susanne Rabenschlag Violin Peter Stein Viola Karin Wolf Violincello Andrej Melik The Verdi Quartet well known by its recordings, broadcast, international performances and competitions was formed in 1985 at the College of Music in Cologne (Klner Musikhochschule). After studies with the Amadeus Quartett they also joined master classes of the Schostakowitsch Quartett, Moskau and the Melos Quartett, Stuttgart. The musicians are still in contact with their mentors like Martin Lovett and Bruno Giuranna who have also performed with them. This joint effort led to contacts to great composers like Benjamin Britten whose 3rd String-Quartet was performed first by the Amedus Quartett in cooperation with the composer himself. His notes were fascinating as well as formative for the Verdi Quartett. Other preferred composers of the modern classical music are Kodaly, Bartok, and Schostakowitsch. But the Quartet's musical favourites are the classical pieces for string quartets. Following the recording of Schubert¡¯s string quartets (Hnssler), the next big recording project will be Brahms¡¯ complete chamber music works for strings. The expressed aim of the musicians is a Beethoven recording project.

The Finalists of the 2001 Oberlin International Piano Competition By Marci Janas '91 Soo-Jung Ann , 13, was born in Seoul, Korea. Since starting piano at the age of five, she has won numerous awards and competitions, among them the Teenagers' Piano Competition, Samick Piano Competition, and Chosun Newspaper Music Competition. She was a prize-winner in the Moscow International Junior Chopin Competition and has been invited to perform in Warsaw by the International Chopin Foundation. She has appeared as a recitalist in the Kumho Prodigy Concert Series and as soloist with the Poland National Wieniawski Philharmonic. In 2002, she will present a concert tour in Poland with recitals and concerto appearances. She is currently studying at Ye-Won Middle School and at the Preparatory Division of the Korean National University of Arts. Her teachers include Hae-Jeon Lee and Choong-Mo Kang.
