He died at the age of 85 in Chatsworth, California on 27th April 1977 In 1934, MGM decided that they had to get into the growing cartoon business but they weren't brave enough to create their own unit. Instead, they bought in cartoons from the Hugh Harman/Rudolf Ising company (the name of the company, Harman-Ising, was a deliberate pun). Scott Bradley worked for Harman-Ising, having previously been at Disney, alongside Carl Stalling who later went to Warner Brothers and worked on 600 of the famous Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. So, when MGM decided to create their own in-house cartoon unit in 1938, it was natural that they bought in most of the people from the Harman-Ising stable and Bradley became a full time MGM employee. Cartoon music was, in the mid 1930s, still pretty much a collection of popular songs linked together with the occasional musical effect supporting the action. Encouraged by her high school choral director, Patti auditioned and was accepted at the Crane School of Music, SUNY, Potsdam, NY and it was there she met the two people who would play major roles in her decision to pursue a career as a jazz musician. College At Crane, Patti studied piano with James Ball, a well-respected professor, loved by students and faculty alike. An accomplished classical and jazz pianist, this modest, soft-spoken man introduced Patti to the music that would become a lifelong passion and change the direction of her future. Yet Leslie Gourse has made it her life’s work in more than 30 books. "I know how to speak to anybody and I know if I’m hearing bullshit or the truth," she says. Her latest, Art Blakey: Jazz Messenger , is due out this summer from Schirmer. "I became a jazz writer by accident," she says, when she began chronicling the jazz scene in the 70s while hanging out at Bradley’s, the piano bar on University Pl. She spent 25 years, two nights a week, at the club. "All the best pianists in the world passed through there," she recalls. From 1969 to ’94, Bradley’s featured piano and bass duos. Gourse has fond memories, like the night bassist Ray Drummond and pianist Kenny Barron switched instruments. One piano player–"I won’t use his name because he’s still working"–booked himself into Bradley’s and another club for the same nights. He played 20 minutes, took a break, ran to the other place, did a set, ran back. When a bartender figured it out, the pianist was fired.
