Local musicians perform beautifully
(Saturday, January 11, 2003 10:24 pm)
pg. 1 / 1 Advertisement It was a homecoming of sorts. Two "local boys" had gone out in the world and "done good," and came home to great acclaim. Actually, done good is an extreme understatement, as these two men are now internationally renowned artists.
Tenor Anthony Dean Griffey and pianist Warren Jones are at the pinnacle of success in the world of classical music; they returned to their North Carolina home for a concert Friday night.
Tenor Griffey, a High Point native, and pianist Jones, who grew up in Thomasville, gave a superb concert as part of the High Point Community Concert Association.
Adding variety to the program, these two artists were joined by a singer and string collaborators.
Griffey was joined by his former voice teacher, Jane McCoy, a professor of voice at Warren Wilson College, for a dramatic presentation of Canticle II, "Abraham and Isaac," by Benjamin Britten. The work is a telling of the biblical story of God's bidding to Abraham to kill his son, Isaac. Using a minimal amount of staging, the two singers convincingly sang this tale of obedience and mercy.

OBITUARY WARREN ZEVON Warren Zevon was one of the many singer-songwriters to emerge from the hedonistic environment of Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, with quirky songs which stemmed from his own experiences. He later said, "I wrote my songs despite the fact that I was a drunk, not because of it", but his songs would have been very different without the wayward life style fuelling his imagination. His best-known hit was "Werewolves of London" in 1978, but Zevon's was a cult following and he never made it to the top of the tree. This can partly be attributed to his personal problems, but also to the fact that his raspy voice could give his often diverse tracks a similar sound. "I wish I could sing better," he would muse. "If only I could sing like Don Henley." The seeds of Zevon's unusual songs can be found in his background. He was born in Chicago in 1947. His mother, Beverly, was a Mormon of Scots-Welsh descent and her strong-minded parents disapproved of her husband, William, a Russian-Jewish immigrant (whose surname had been Zevotovsky), who worked as a boxer and professional gambler. Warren's father was often away from home and when his parents divorced Warren was not told about it by his mother until some months afterwards. Warren Zevon was a good scholar, but dropped out of high school because he was furious with a teacher who accused him of having had help in writing an essay. He was also a gifted classical pianist and throughout his life wrote classical music but, apart from a few interludes included on his albums, these compositions have not been recorded.

This is thought to be the first time in Broadway history that a mother and son will star together in a Broadway musical. Cassidy's father was the late Jack Cassidy. Jones — the renowned ingenue of such films as "The Music Man," "Carousel" and "Oklahoma!" — will play the fading, imperious star, Dorothy Brock, whose injury allows a newcomer to take over. As diva Dorothy, Jones gets to sing such choice Al Dubin Harry Warren songs as "Shadow Waltz," "About a Quarter to Nine" and "I Only Have Eyes For You."

Dr. Greenberg will examine the Summer Festival repertoire through the lens of Italian opera, what he calls "the NASA of 17th Century music," showing how overtures of these operas became the foundation of the symphony. The Willie Jones Discography
Latest revision: May 21, 2004 Willie Jones at the piano during the Jo Jo Show at Cadillac Bob's Flame Show Bar, 1954 or 1955. Dr. Jo Jo Adams is the MC; Phil Thomas is at the drums; and Billy Howell is on trumpet. From the collection of Charles Walton. Willie Jones is one of the more intriguing pianists on the Chicago scene of the late 1940s and 1950s. He was admired by Sun Ra and Andrew Hill, sought after by some musicians, imitated by a few, shunned as too weird by others. According to Red Holloway, Chicago musicians called him "the piano wrecker." He has never gotten any attention outside of Chicago. In his series of articles that reminisced about the Chicago nightlife of the 1940s and 1950s, Ted Watson wrote, "Willie Jones, the elbow-bamming pianist, who was a sight to watch and listen to, had his selected crew doing chores at the Macombo [sic] Lounge opposite Tom Archia and Illinois Jacquet" ("When Trumpet Was in Flower," Chicago Defender , August 8, 1974). That should be Macomba , and Jacquet never held down a gig there, though we may fairly assume that while in town he participated in the Macomba's legendary jam sessions.
