ALEXANDER FITERSTEIN, clarinetist "Alexander Fiterstein played the solo part hotly and expertly."
[U.S. premiere of the clarinet concerto "Memorial," by Henrik Strindberg, at the Juilliard Focus! Festival]
- Paul Griffiths, THE NEW YORK TIMES

"A high point in the program was the impressive performance of the Weber Concertino by clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein. This very talented player revealed solid technique and displayed exceptional articulation."
- THE GAZETTE (Kalamazoo)

"Schubert's 'The Shepherd on the Rock' [with soprano Roberta Peters and pianist Warren Jones] was exquisite and sublime. Alexander Fiterstein's clarinet playing had the subtle essence of mellowness. His intuitive and sensitive playing made this a performance of such rare beauty that if there had been nothing else, this one piece would have been worth the ticket price."
- NEWS-SENTINEL (Knoxville)

"Fiterstein was a virtuoso soloist. He played [the Weber Concertino] with fluent voicing and timbre."

Bo SKOVHUS
Heart of the Poet
- Available on CD
For his third solo recording for Sony Classical, baritone Bo Skovhus has turned to the songs of Robert Schumann and his wife, the pianist and composer Clara Wieck Schumann, in a new collection entitled The Heart of the Poet that includes Robert Schumann's celebrated song cycles Dichterliebe, Op.48, and Liederkreis, Op.24. Pianist Helmut Deutsch Both cycles were written during Robert Schumann's celebrated "year of the song" in 1840, during which he composed many of his finest songs. The composer had been forced into a separation from his fiancée Clara Wieck at the insistence of her father. His heightened emotional state possibly inspired him to such an unexpected burst of creativity, resulting in songs of a quality unequalled since the death of Schubert over a decade earlier. So pleased was Schumann with his work that he insisted that Clara, an acclaimed pianist who showed no interest in being a composer, try her hand at songwriting after they were finally allowed to marry late in 1840. The Heart of the Poet brings together two of Schumann's greatest song cycles from 1840, both set to poems of Heinrich Heine - Liederkreis, Op.24, containing nine songs and completed in February, and the 16-song Dichterliebe, Op.48, written in the last week of May. (In the same year, Schumann composed a second work entitled Liederkreis, Op.39, set to poems of Joseph von Eichendorff.) Also included in

JAZZ TIMES
Artist: Whitfield, Wesla
Title of CD: September Songs
Record Label: HighNote
The indefatigable Wesla Whitfield is at it again, breaking new ground on her umpteenth
album, September Songs (HighNote), by uniting with various combinations of
sidemen to concurrently explore the songbooks of Alec Wilder, Kurt Weill and
Harry Warren. Backed by husband Mike Greensill's elegantly subdued trio (the
comfortable Whitfield setting we're most accustomed to) and the Gary Foster Horns,
she opens with a "September Song" that's more bitter than sweet, then shifts gears,
augmenting the trio with the lilting strings of the Kronos Quartet for a dreamy "Speak Low" and a splendidly clever medley of "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "Jeepers Creepers." Next, she swaps out Greensill's trio for Tommy Flanagan's for a lively spin through Wilder's wittily upbeat "Lovers and Losers." The Foster Horns then return to lend a touch of big band vivacity to "I Had the Craziest Dream." Finally, Whitfield

BEST PICTURE:
Chicago
Gangs of New York
The Hours
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Pianist
PREDICTION: Curtis: Chicago Because every year the winner is the movie I have the least interest in seeing out of the five nominations. The trend continues here. Dan: Chicago This one seems to have the momentum, and Gangs' Best Picture win is not already wrapped up in a pink ribbon like it's Director's win is, so this is a free for all in my opinion. Warren: Chicago Probably the most overrated film of 2002, but it's well-made entertainment guaranteed not to offend (or challenge) a soul. Ryan: Chicago The day that I walked out of my first showing, I knew that it would make 200 million dollars and that it would win Best Picture. I'm sticking with my second prediction. This is a true crowd-pleaser that brings the musical back in a rousing way and the Academy has and will continue to go gaga over it. PERSONAL VOTE: Curtis: The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers The scale of this movie was so grand and epic that it simply deserves it. Amazing to watch, like it or not.

Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14, which started life as a song without text. The voice sings a vowel sound "ah" or "ooh" and is treated as an instrument. Rachmaninoff made the first non-vocal "arrangement" for orchestra and it is appropriately included in this compilation. It is a classic performance of a truncated version necessitated by limited playing time of a 78 rpm disc when the recording was made with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1929. Other orchestral versions included are Morton Gould's own transcription recorded in 1960 with his studio orchestra, and Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic playing Kurt Sanderling's arrangement, recorded in 1991. Both are richly voluptuous, Temirkanov the more leisurely by a small margin..
