JAZZ AT THE PAWNSHOP - THE MUSIC Essentially, of course, it is all a question of love. Love of roots, origins, a musical habitat. Call it swing or third stream jazz if you want to, or mainstream or traditionalism. Associated with the solid precursors of the 20s, 30s and 40s with Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Bunny Berigan, Coleman Hawkins. Or quite simply with all tunes that were written when it all happened and which long ago planted themselves, legs apart and hands on hips, in the folklore of twentieth century America. Use whichever words you like. But don't talk about nostalgia - at least not in the mawkish sense we usually employ the term. For nostalgia - to dedicated musicians, just as to conscious listeners - remains a question of quality, not a matter of annular rings and laments for lost time. We love Frank Sinatra, not because he embodied middle age, suffering and transitory brilliance but because he happened to be an incomparable vocalist. We were struck dumb by Charlie Parker, not just because he belonged to the post-war era and our very own decade of the 1940s (as did so many others inferior to him) but because on his way between birth and downfall he contrived to blow a few phrases, the like of which the world had never heard. Nor, turning to consider this affectionate production, do we love the old songs because they are old; we love them because they are good. They were written at a time when standards were high and when imagination and harmonic inspiration still seemed inexhaustible.

Superb artistry from vocalist Live Maria Roggen, Erlend Skomsvoll (piano), Sondre Meisfjord (bass) and Håkon Mjåset Johansen. The album is available from the Norwegian record company, "Curling Legs".
Joe Lovano
Saxophonist Joe Lovano and "Flights Of Fancy...Trio Fascination - Volume 2. Yet another brilliant album from one of the world's leading improvisors. Various and varied trio settings drawn from Joe Lovano, Cameron Brown, Idris Muhammad, Billy Drewes, Joey Baron, Toots Thielemans, Kenny Werner, Mark Dresser and Dave Douglas. Although Jazz Scene considers Lovano's album "52nd Street Themes" (2000) one of the all-time great jazz albums...the latest offering is also highly recommended listening.
Gary Burton Vibes master Gary Burton and "For Hamp, Red, Bags and Cal". A most satisfactory album featuring several standards. A tribute to Burton's vibes heros Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo Milt Jackson and Cal Tjader. Burton has some wonderful musicians around him on the album including: Russell Malone, Christian McBride, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash, Makoto Ozone, John Patitucci and Danilo Perez. Anders Aarum Debut album from young Norwegian pianist, Anders Aarum. An album of original compositions featuring bassist Mats Eilertsen and drummer Torstein Ellingsen. "The Lucky Strike" (Hot Club Records) is Anders musical tribute to the sport of bowling! A most impressive debut from a most in-demand young pianist.

3. Lars Svendsen And Gurri Halvorsdatter

http://www.brucerognan.com/ole hagen.htm
Ole Hagen and Dorthea Larsdatter Family History Lars Svendsen and Gurri Halvorsdatter (Dorthea's Parents) Lars Svendsen was born on 5 Sep 1806 on the Nenset Farm in Bamble, Telemark, Norway. The Nenset Church is directly adjacent to the Bamble church. His parents were Swen Nenset Thorsen (1758) and Anne Larsdatter (1769). Swen and Anne had 7 children of which Lars was the youngest: Thor (1791), Ingaborg (1793), Anne (1796), Kari (1798), Gundvor (1802), Gunvor (1803), and Lars (1806). Lars' ancestors had been managing the Nenset for several generations. Prior to that his family ran the Orwig farm for many generations since 1588. Due to overcrowding on the Nenset farm Lars had to look elsewhere for employment. In Norway at that time, farming and fishing were still the only reliable forms of employment because the industrial revolution had not taken hold yet. So Lars looked to other farms for employment. He found opportunity at the Stomyr farm, nearby. Like the about 95% of the young men in Norway, he married his wife only after she was able to prove she could conceive a child. This tradition was necessary since Norwegian inheritance laws restricted benefits to people without decendants. Lars married Gurri Halvorsdatter in the fall of 1840 in Bamble when she was about 6 months pregnant with Halvor. Guri Halvorsdatter was born December 30, 1810 on the Skoe farm in Bo, Telemark, Norway. Their farm in Bo had also become significantly overcrowded. The population explosion that occurred in Norway in the 18th century took its toll in the rich farmlands, like Telemark, first. As the land got overcrowded people had to leave their homeland and look for land to farm elsewhere.

Leif Ove Andsnes discusses the Risor Festival of Chamber music, June 25 through June 30, 2002
How did you begin your association with the Risor Festival? Who are some of the more prominent performers who have appeared at the festival in recent years?
Just a few we have had are Gidon Kremer, Maxim Vengerov, Joshua Bell, Christian Tetzlaff, Barbara Hendricks, Ian Bostridge (who will come back next year), Stephen Isserlis and Heinrich Schiff. Matthias Goerne will also come next year. Tell us a little about the programming for this summer. We are doing some odd things, like these short dramas by Schumann ("Die Fluchtlinge") and Schubert, "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" with Julia Stemberger, who is a very famous Austrian actress. She’s performing in Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire th , which opens with the Risor Festival Strings performing some Schubert "Dances" for orchestra, then a piece by our composer-in-residence, then some Schubert Ländler for solo piano that I will play, a string quartet by Kurtág performed by the Artemis Quartet, and then the Schubert Piano Trio, D. 898. The program is mixed in terms of performers and also in terms of how familiar the music is to the listeners. How are the programs determined?

CRITICS AND REVIEWS
LOGOS - 2000 Years With Christ is a Cantate for choir, soloists, orchestra, rhythm and horn sections. The music is by Jens Wendelboe and the Lyrics by Martin Alfsen. The lyrics are inspired by and adapted from the Gospel of John. Kor-90, a choir from Gjovik, Norway commissioned Jens Wendelboe in 1999 to write this piece for the Jubileum Year - 2000. LOGOS is somewhat of a groundbreaker within the Cantate genre as it encompasses and embraces a wide range of music styles. The Cantate had its premier concert in the Olympic Hall in Gjovik, Norway. This and all subsequent concerts have all been met with great reviews. Various movements from LOGOS were aired on NRK, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, first on New Years Eve 99/00, and then again on a highly rated live entertainment program to raise funds for the Red Cross in August 2000. TV2, another national television corporation in Norway, produced LOGOS in its entirety and aired the enclosed program on the evening of April 14th, 2001. This time is commonly known as "Easter Eve" in Norway. Jens, composer, arranger, conductor and trombonist is a highly regarded composer of jazz and symphonic music and has written music for numerous Norwegian television productions and 11 CDs. He lived in the United States in the early 1980's, then moved his base to Norway, and has just recently returned to reside in the United States. Among his more commercially known credits in the US is his work as Donna Summer's regular musical director from 1992-1995. Martin Alfsen, musician, producer, songwriter and choir director is a recognized name in Scandinavia's gospel and religious music circles. Resumes for both are enclosed.

Interview

Arne Wilhelmsson
