Silvia Luraghi's Letters from Milan 2003 January Massenet's Don Quichotte in Turin: Michele Pertusi as Don Quichotte and Roberto di Candia as Sancho La Scala presented its second opera this season at the Arcimboldi theater - Der Rosenkavalier , conducted by Jeffrey Tate, in a 1996 production from the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, who sang the Marschallin on the first night, fell ill immediately thereafter; since apparently no cover had been contracted in advance, the company had to find various replacements at the last moment, including Cheryl Studer, Brigitte Hahn and Elizabeth Whitehouse. Cheryl Studer came in for one performance only, on January 11, and proved that the role suits her very well at this point in her career. In spite of the short notice, she fitted perfectly in the production and sang securely, giving an authoritative performance. As Octavian, mezzo Kristine Jepson was also very effective, and sang with youthful impetus. She proved especially remarkable in the last act, where she found a perfect partner in Laura Aikin, a lovely Sophie. Kurt Rydl has sang the role of Baron Ochs a big number of times and his account of the role is complete. All supporting roles were well cast, including the Italian singer, Tito Beltran, who looked and sounded exactly how Strauss thought an Italian singer should look and sound. The Pierluigi Pizzi production featured traditional sets turning on a rotating platform, that allowed changes from the Marschallin's bedroom to her living room and other settings without interrupting the action. In the pit Jeffrey Tate gave a lively though appropriately melancholy reading of the score.

Saturday, April 13 – Cruising the Pacific Ocean
Don’t expect much excitement today…we didn’t even leave the room until 2:30pm. Remember, we jumped ahead three hours, so that’s pretty much our usual time. However, we did sleep longer than usual to make up for lost time the past week. We heard absolutely no noise from the corridor at all and we were awake several times from 7:30am onward. Maybe people are seasick? It’s a bit less rough than it was overnight, but it’s probably enough to make a few people queasy. There was a brunch in the Dining Room today, that was same as the previous ones, but we didn’t get up in time to partake in it. Our only option for food was the Trident Grill , so we had burgers and grilled cheese. It’s very cold and windy today, so of course, the big sliding doors to the pool are open.

COSMOS TOUR - VANCOUVER AND ROCKIES INSIDE PASSAGE CRUISE TO ALASKA 28TH MAY - 16TH JUNE 2001 1st Day - Journey to Vancouver, British Columbia Manchester - London - Chicago - Vancouver. From leaving our house in Preston, Lancashire, England, to arriving at the hotel in Vancouver it took just under 24 hours. If it is possible to get a direct flight then that would be so much better, or at least only one change. We were only supposed to change at Chicago but unfortunately a couple of weeks before we travelled we received a letter informing us that we had to change at London as well. We were transferred by stretch limo to the hotel and felt like celebrities. Quality Inn, Vancouver - Situate in Downtown about twenty minutes walk from the harbour. Nice room with two double beds, hair dryer, iron/board, tea/coffee making facilities. You could purchase a buffet breakfast for $10 or a la carte. We had a nice continental breakfast for $6.95. (Fruit juice, choice of two of six items, i.e. croissant, toast, danish pastry, muffin etc., fresh fruit salad and tea or coffee). Outdoor heated pool. Vancouver - is a very large cosmopolitan city made more attractive by the expanse of water around it. It is Canada's third largest city, after Toronto and Montreal. It enjoys a mild climate year-round. Attractions are numerous - wander round Gastown and Chinatown, take a ride up the Harbour Tower, see a film at the Imax Theatre, have a ramble round Stanley Park etc.

Average review score: Orchestral Trumpet Player's Bible: I carry this recording around with me in my case, and listen to it before auditions, concerts, rehearsals, etc. It's simply how the excerpts (along with trumpet playing in general) should sound. Smith's virtuostic playing, coupled with his vast orchestral experience, really teach the parts. All trumpet players, top to bottom, have something to learn from this CDand while the entire work (with orchestra) and part should be studied (Smith actually recommends this), it is still very useful to hear one of the finest players on earth performing just the trumpet part. Essential Recording for Any Trumpet Player If any principal orchestral trumpet player has succeeded Adolph Herseth as the "state of the art," the probable consensus among his peers would be Philip Smith of the New York Philharmonic. His virtually flawless technique, gourgeous sound, rarified musicianship and exceptional leadership make him virtually unique in his field, and his more than 20 years with the Philharmonic (plus his early years with the Chicago Symphony) have firmly established him as one of the greats in the history of orchestral brass performance.

    • Brazilian City Confers Honorary Citizenship on SGI President
On October 16, Contagem City, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, conferred an honorary citizenship on SGI President Daisaku Ikeda. Contagem Mayor Ademir Lucas Gomes, Assembly President Maria Lucia Guedes Vieira and Assemblyman Arnaldo Luiz de Oliveira were present for the ceremony. During a reading of the citation, Assembly President Oliveira commented that the assembly's decision to confer the honorary citizenship was unanimous, attesting to the relevance of Mr. Ikeda's pacifist ideals in modern society. Ms. Oliveira said Mr. Ikeda is shaping the future of the world by fostering capable youth who will contribute to humanity's future. [The conferral was conducted three days before the anniversary of Mr. Ikeda's first visit to Brazil on October 16, 1960. At that time, Mr. Ikeda, scheduled to fly to Brazil from New York, was seized with a bout of illness. Although people around him tried to dissuade him from making the trip until he recovered, he refused to concede and went on to visit Brazil as planned, citing that his mentor Mr. Toda had never succumbed to obstacles. Mr. Ikeda writes about this incident in his novel, The New Human Revolution.

Last week, the smart bomb who's so smart and always bombs unveiled the latest model in the continuing series of ''the real Al Gores.'' His speech began promisingly: ''Like all Americans, I have been wrestling.'' Hey, that's terrific, I thought. Put aside the typical Gorian exaggeration at the beginning, it's great to see the former vice president has finally come to terms with his unsuitability for electoral politics and embarked on a rewarding midlife career change. I for one would willingly get premium cable to see Al (The Real Al) Gore grabbing The Rock by his dangling chads and hurling him over the ropes into a sea of baying attorneys. But, no, alas. Al is not wrestling anybody else, he's just wrestling with himselfor, in Al's case, himselvesover what to do about Iraq. Democrats have been doing this for months now. Swing by the average Democratic senator's pad and you'll find him down in the rec room wrestling with his conscience, hour after hour, day in, day out. The Democrats have spent so much time wrestling with themselves on this issue they must be the most honed fighting force on the planet. Some say the swiftest way to topple Saddam would be to drop this elite team of crack fighting Dems on Baghdad. Others fear it could all go horribly wrong: ''What the hell's that racket?''
