Cal Poly Arts Announces New 2003-04 Season SAN LUIS OBISPO Tickets for the new Cal Poly Arts subscription series are now on sale at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office. With its 2003/04 season, Cal Poly Arts continues to bridge the worlds of arts and entertainment. "Our goal was to find the most exciting and talented live acts available," said Cal Poly Arts Director Ralph Hoskins. "To do that, you have to look beyond labels and categories. We look for fine arts that are fun and entertainment that is sophisticated." The Cal Poly Arts full-color season brochure, available from the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office, describes the 40 diverse events to be presented at the Christopher Cohan Center, Cal Poly Theatre, and Clark Center during the 2003-04 season. Audiences may look forward to popular entertainers Bob Newhart, Bill Maher, and Michael Feinstein headlining at the Performing Arts Center. As part of a special Center Stage event staged in November, tickets are on sale now to subscribers to see Garrison Keillor in "A Prairie Home Companion." Broadway musical touring companies will stage the provocative "Rent" and a popular revival of "The Music Man," while a return engagement of STOMP plays for three shows only.

Concert group plans membership drive By Bill Varble Pianist Mia Chung is set to kick off the Jackson County Community Concert Association’s Great Artists Series 2001-2002 season in September in Medford. It’s the group’s 61st season, and association officials just hope it’s not one of the last. "Our problem is that membership is dropping off," says the association’s Ron Cochran. "Primarily due to an aging population and the fact that the younger people just don’t know about us — or possibly care about classical music." The association presents classical and other concerts, most of them at South Medford High School. Association members buy tickets for the whole season in advance by subscription; tickets aren’t sold for individual concerts. Tickets go on sale for the 2001-2002 season in a membership drive set for Feb. 3-10. Meanwhile, tickets remain on sale (they’re $45 general, $20 for students) for the four shows remaining in the 2000-2001 Great Artists Series. That includes the renowned Manhattan Chamber Orchestra Jan. 18, Gus Giordano’s Jazz Dance Chicago Feb. 20, the Santa Fe Opera Quartet March 26 and pianist Tian Jiang May 1. The season’s first show, a concert by baritone Joe Carter, took place in September.

Wang Lisan Scholar of the Chinese People, Genius of the Music Sphere - Composer Wang Lisan
by Zhou Zhuquan (Encyclopaedia of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Musicians)
translated by Elaine Chew (Aug 1997) Wang Lisan was born in 1933, March 24th, in the city of Wuhan in Hubei province. His ancestors came from Sichuan's Jianwei district. His grandfather, Wang Jinpo, was an official of the late Qing dynasty who revered Taoism and loved calligraphy. At the fall of the dynasty and change of government, because of his sympathies for the Weixin (maintaining new) philosophy, he was labelled a bingci (Sick Resign) official, moving south to Shanghai (later on to Wuhan). His father, Wang Zhengfu, on graduating from Fudan University's Economics Department and Dongwu University's French Institue, worked mainly as a founder of schools. In 1930 in Wuhan he founded the Lide School of Accounting, three years later his third son was born whom he named Lisan. His mother Su Bihui came from a well established family and was very kind. At the outbreak of the war in 1937, the family moved to Chengdu. Wang Lisan was born into a scholarly family, from a tender age he was schooled at home, coming into contact with traditional Chinese culture. Influenced by his grandfather, he was deeply immersed in Taoist philosophies. His father embraced the philosophy of freedom in the upbringing of his children, letting nature take its own course in the shaping of his children's character and hobbies. Hence, Wang Lisan developed an open scholarly attitude and an independent learning spirit, his knowledge became vast and broad. After 1940, he entered the Sanying, Diwei and Zhongxin elementary schools. (?)

Hong Jing Yao (Ah Yao) - Keyboard Player/Pianist
An accomplished music arranger and keyboard player/pianist, Ah Yao also has an album "Sleepless Bible" under his name. Inside, you would find 12 new cool arrangements of Wakin's songs, which includes "Qing Fei De Yi"! Well known for his stage chemistry with Wakin, he goes on to prove it even further in the Malaysia 2003 concert when he actually paused together with Wakin when Wakin forgot the lyrics to "Tian Hei Hei" and actually played in sync with him when he had finally remembered his next line of lyrics!
Wakin always says that he looks like a girl from behind..
hhmm...does he Since we are buddies, there is no need for a reason to be together at any time!?
Li Wan Fu (Xiao Hai) - Bass guitarist
Part of the Hard Band, Xiao Hai is also known as the "Andy Lau of Chinatown" (that's what Wakin called him in the 2002 SG concert). Cool looking and talented, Ah Zheng Lao Shi also introduced him as the bass guitarist who "defeated" him in the 2003 Malaysia Concert. Although Xiao Hai has only gained more exposure recently, he has actually been part of Wakin's production crew since many years back, often being the guitarist or being part of the background vocals. For example, in the song "Wo Shi Ma Ma De" in the album Who Am I, Xiao Hai is part of the big group that sings the song. Just like how you always see Lee Chi with his blue violin, Xiao Hai is also almost always seen with his blue and white bass guitar too!

Taipei: Practitioners Bring People a "Feast of Beauty" (Photos)
By a Falun Gong Practitioner in Taipei (Clearwisdom.net) An outdoor performance at the Public TV 53 Square on January 3, 2004 fascinated a large audience and passersby. It was sponsored by Taipei New Culture Promotion Association, which aims to bring positive culture to the public.
Xiao Yao Xin Chorus is composed of twenty Falun Gong practitioners. Their elegant and graceful costumes of Tang-Dynasty style were made by Falun Gong practitioners with sewing expertise. They sing in such costumes in order to match with their songs of ancient style, as well as to bring people the beauty of pure elegance. A woman chorus member said that her movements became smoother and her voice became softer with her costume on. If everyone in society could wear such elegant and noble clothing, the overall climate of the society would be more pure and peaceful.

    Adventures
Faced with an unusual application essay, prospective students had the chance to show off their more venturesome sides. Just what could they do with 10 bucks and a big idea?
The admissions office crafted this essay question to reach "a dimension that goes beyond transcripts and SAT scores," says John Latting, director of Undergraduate Admissions It was a way to convey "the high value we put on creativity and discovery, on membership in a community," Latting continues. The question was also meant to show Hopkins' sense of humor, to "soften some of the hard edges." It worked. Applicants tackled this question with imagination, introspection, humor, and above all, a spirit of adventure, dreaming up everything from an ideal day spent with friends (or a not-so-ideal night spent with family), to an African journey, to a trip aboard the space shuttle. So what does the incoming freshman class look like? As the following essays illustrate, the class of 2007 is hard to pin down. They come from all walks of life and from all over the world, and they have all kinds of plans. One thing they do have in common? For all of them, the adventure is just beginning.

    CHRONOLOGICAL PRODUCTION HISTORY
Y angtze Repertory Theatre of America
was co-founded by Joanna Chan in 1992 to produce works for and by Asian artists. Since then, has become New York's most significant entry point for dramatic works from Chinese-speaking countries and a place of collaboration for artists from various parts of Asia, especially from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China proper. This is notable considering that for years, Chinese from these areas have not come together socially. (Photo by Christopher Thomas) Yangtze's 1997 production of "Between Life and Death," a Beckettian play by Gao Xingjian (commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture), was the only play by that author ever produced in America before Mr. Gao won the 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature. To accompany that production, which was staged at Theater for the New City, Yangtze Rep also presented a month long exhibition of Mr. Gao's ink paintings in the lobby of Pace University's Schimmel Center for the Arts in 1997. To-date, these events are the only full-length presentations of Mr. Gao's work in the U.S.

    Opera's El Dorado
Brazil's Il Guarany : A Golden Opportunity By Joseph McLellan
    Special to The Washington Post
When Placido Domingo announced that the Washington Opera's 1996-97 season would open with Il Guarany , the most common reaction around town was, "Il what?" Now, a Sony recording (S2K 66275, two CDs with libretto) gives a very clear idea of what Domingo was talking about. He has the role of Pery the chief of the Guarani Indian tribe, living near Rio de Janeiro around the year 1560 in a superb performance of the opera by Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Gomes (1836-1896). On the evidence of this recording, taped live in Bonn with John Neschling conducting the city's Beethovenhalle Orchestra and Opera Chorus, our next opera season should open in splendor. Il Guarany has a thud-and-blunder plot of a kind common in the mid-19th century, but the music is spectacularly good, with strong dramatic impact, expert orchestration and excellent melodic material for soloists and chorus. If you heard this recording without being told what it was, you might easily mistake it for a previously unknown opera by Giuseppe Verdi. Il Guarany was a smashing success at its premier at La Scala in 1870, but later passed into oblivion outside of Brazil where it is still a cornerstone of operatic life. Domingo deserves considerable gratitude for his role in reviving it for European audiences and bringing it to Washington for the centennial of the composer's death. In this recording, he is supported by an excellent cast, notably Veronica Villaroel as Cecilia, Pery's Portuguese beloved, and Carlos Alvarez as Gonzales, the villainous adventurer who tries to abduct her and steal the silver mines owned by her father (Hao Jiang Tian). All four will be feature in the Washington Opera production next November, and the quality of their performance on this recording promises some outstanding singing.
