His forays into classical music were taking him away from jazz, and the strain caused by this clash between his schedule and his desires left him in shock, withdrawn from music. He retreated to his home studio and began recording songs using a variety of instruments. The songs aren't really jazz, and he eschews, for the most part, the piano. He emerged from this crisis with Spirits , a double album of this self-made folk music, and a new schedule that allowed for both classical and jazz work. In the past few years, Jarrett has again faced an ailment that derailed his career. For the last three years of the '90s, the pianist dealt with a chronic-fatigue syndrome type illness that left him unable to play. But where in 1985 he battled back by tackling something new, this time he turned to the past in his quest for an entry point back into music. The result

Astonishing Improvisations in the Old Tradition
There is a lot of "finding God" and using this as background for night time pursuits, so the first thing I would say is that I have never listened to this album this way. I stumbled on the cassette tape the year it came out, not knowing either the artist or frankly even the genre of music, curious only by the title of "concert." Describing the music in classical terms doesn't mean that the music has a "classic" flavor, on the contrary, Jarrett frequently slips into gospel/jazz harmonies and rhythms, so there's no mistaking the source in American jazz. On the other hand, the pieces are more subdued in the ruminative classical tradition (except for the second of the four); the other three all start slow and build into something truly artistic. This is really great solo piano playing, period. Ragging about New Age is irrelevant. These are long, serious, COMPOSITIONS even if improvised and they rank right up there with some of the best ever.

Produced and hosted by WNYC culture attaché and The Fishko Files host Sara Fishko , the hour-long special features an exclusive interview recorded at Mr. Jarrett's home in New Jersey. During the interview, the often media-shy Jarrett discussed the process involved in music-making, and elaborated on what he thinks and feels when he's improvising. Over the past 37 years, Keith Jarrett has come to be recognized as one of the most creative and uncompromising musicians of our time - collectively as a brilliant improviser; a master of jazz and classical piano; and as a multifaceted composer. Venue: Zellerbach Hall Price: Subscription Series: Choose-Your-Own Subscription As one of the most profoundly creative musicians of our time, jazz pianist Keith Jarrett is in a class all his own. One of the first musicians to perform improvised music at such major music centers as La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, Jarrett has redefined the role of the piano in contemporary music and his seminal Koln Concert recording is the best-selling piano album in history. A fearless innovator, Jarrett has explored a broad spectrum of musical idioms and languages, from the electric jazz-fusion he played as a member of Miles Davis' early-'70s group to his acclaimed forays into the classical and Baroque repertoire. In 2003, Jarrett celebrated the 20th anniversary of his award-winning collaboration with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, a trio with near-telepathic sensitivity to each other's playing. They have been hailed as one of the finest trios in jazz history, "a distillation of an astonishing amount of talent, will, and sheer creativity," says the Los Angeles Times Patron Information Program Notes: Program notes are available online beginning one week prior to performance.

    How I Create
    , Utne Reader
Web Specials Archives Issue Pianist Keith Jarrett is one of the jazz world's most prolific and ambitious artists. Lately he has been devoting himself to three pursuits: solo improvisational concerts, gigs with his jazz trio, and classical performances, including an ongoing series of Mozart concertos with Dennis Russell Davies and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. Jarrett's newest recording, La Scala (ECM), was made at his February 1995 solo concert at Milan's famous opera house. Writer Keith Goetzman spoke with him about his creative process.
Once Miles Davis asked me, "How do you play from nothing?" And I said, "You know, you just do it." And that actually is the answer. I wish there were a way to make "I don't know" a positive thing, which it isn't in our society. We feel that we need to "know" certain things, and we substitute that quest for the actual experience of things in all its complexity. When I play pure improvisation, any kind of intellectual handles are inappropriate because they get in the way of letting the river move where it's supposed to move. To do an improvised concert this includes the La Scala concert and every other time I walk on the stage and play from zero I need to find a way to start the journey without creating the subject matter in my mind. In other words, I cannot have a melody or a motif in my head, because those things will protrude into the fabric. They will be too prominent and make the music seem like a solid object rather than a flowing process. I have to not play what's in my ears, if there's something in my ears. I have to find a way for my hands to start the concert without me.
