Standard Deviation
Jazz legend Keith Jarrett needs no introductions. by Nate Chinen In jazz parlance, a "standard" is a song in the collective repertoire, rendered familiar by years of interpretation. It was in 1983 that Jarrett, along with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, recorded Los Angeles Times The Melody at Night, With You Whisper Not Changes have crept into the repertoire as well. Whisper Not features a preponderance of bebop tunes, which Jarrett plays with a skittering quicksilver touch. Artist:
Keith Jarrett / Gary Peacock / Jack DeJohnette Album: Always Let Me Go Label: ECM
Superlatives Fall Short
Always Let Me Go , a double disc compendium of concert recordings released in 2002, advances the winning streak and once again substantiates why Jarrett holds the figurative keys to the ECM kingdom. Though a successor to last year’s two-disc offering of concert-rendered standards, this set actually has more in common with Inside Out , released in 2001. The latter set visited the trio veering away from their usual diet of standards and seeking out the fresh repast of spontaneous improvisation. This time out the goal seems the same, but the resulting music is anything but rote. Jarrett’s infamous vocalese surfaces routinely as a fourth voice on stage, lacing and mimicking his lines on the piano in a fashion that annoys some listeners and amuses others. Peacock and DeJohnette appear at ease with their employer’s idiosyncratic behavior and focus instead on conjuring impromptu spirits from their respective divining rods of bass and drums. The majority of other pieces, while shorter, still hover around the 14-minute range in size and scope. Of these “Tributaries” and “Tsunami” really stand out. On the former, the sparse-stepping patter of DeJohnette’s cymbals starts a journey that evolves exponentially in terms of density and momentum. Moving from modest beginnings into a dark, portentous groove dominated by stabbing block chords and the corpulent ostinato of Peacock’s bass, the piece is awash in an almost angry dysphoria. “Tsunami” highlights Jarrett’s agility behind the ivories at its onset before swirling around a comparatively tight tonal center. The close repartee of his partners pushes the pianist further as he races through a litany of laddered lines. Later, DeJohnette’s tribal-toned beats bring the piece to a fever pitch.

Jazzcorner's Speakeasy JAZZ NEWS View Full Version : Keith Jarrett wins the 2004 Sonning Music Prize Lois Gilbert COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - American pianist and composer Keith Jarrett won
the 2004 Sonning Music Prize, organizers of the award said Wednesday.
Jarrett, who will receive the $80,645 award July 7 during the annual
Copenhagen Jazz Festival, was cited for ``having created his own
unmistakable language through his exquisite fantasy and intelligence.''
The 58-year-old artist, who is the second jazz musician to receive the
prize, ``has experimented and modernized (music) without rejecting
tradition (and) is uncorrupted of the times and music's trends and
caprices,'' according to the committee's citation.
The last jazz musician to receive the award, named after Leonie Sonning,
was Miles Davis in 1984. The Sonning Music Prize has been awarded annually since 1959 to an internationally renowned composer, musician, conductor or singer. Previous winners include Igor Stravinsy, Leonard Bernstein and Anne-Sophie Mutter, among others.

Music Review: The Melody At Night, With You by Keith Jarrett (ECM 1675)
Piano variations from the American songbook
By Philip Sprake 30 March 2000 Use this version to print In contemporary jazz it is sometimes difficult, at least for novices, to recognise the difference between a technically proficient musician and a truly great one. The Melody At Night, With You , a collection of rich piano solos released on CD late last year by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, is an unambiguous demonstration of great jazz musicianship and further proof that he is one of the more significant jazz pianists to emerge since the 1960s. The album, which was recorded in 1997 when Jarrett was fighting a protracted battle with the debilitating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), has none of the extraordinary technical wizardry characteristic of his early career. And while the effects of CFS may explain the occasional melancholic tone on some tracks, the CD demonstrates Jarrett's complete mastery of the instrument, reaching emotional depths rarely achieved by most contemporary jazz pianists. 70. Keith Jarrett Biography
keith jarrett s musical beginnings were rooted more in the classical The beginningof jarrett s career as a jazz Having worked as a cocktail pianist in Boston
http://www.hull.ac.uk/php/faspse/biog.htm
Keith Jarrett - A Short Biography. The following is intended only as an introduction to Keith Jarrett's life and career: the definitive account of Jarrett's work to date is Ian Carr's biography (see bibliography for details) Keith Jarrett's musical beginnings were rooted more in the classical music tradition than jazz. But then again, talking of Jarrett's music as 'jazz' requires the recognition that that word must in this case encompass an extremely wide range of different musical sources. Indeed, not only has Jarrett recorded and performed classical music extensively (he was worked with, among others Pierre Boulez, Christopher Hogwood and Seiji Ozawa) but some of his recordings have been labelled with the unfortunate term 'world music', although that is in my opinion a serious misunderstanding of the motivation behind them. The beginning of Jarrett's career as a jazz musician reflected the increasingly hard times jazz was starting to face in the early 1960s. Having worked as a cocktail pianist in Boston after leaving the Berklee College of Music (Jarrett's own account of his leaving was of having been thrown out for strumming the strings of a piano), he moved to New York in 1964. But, it was of course extremely difficult to break onto the jazz scene. Finally, after one fortuitous night at the Village Vanguard, Art Blakey hired him, although it was an engagement which didn't last. Instead, it was a contact made in Boston that finally launched Jarrett onto the scene.

wrote (February 15, 2004):
I had the good fortune yesterday to acquire the 1989 ECM Records release of the Goldberg Variations played by Keith Jarrett, thanks to an enthusiastic reference to this recording elsewhere. I hope to post a few notes later about it. Jarrett seems to play the variations without any repeats, which I dearly appreciate. The performance itself is outstanding, in my opinion, and I doubt I will be able to find another version of this quality played on harpsichord. Any further comments on this recording is most welcome.
PS. Nice to have an expert enthusiast for Bach's solo violin works here as well. I hope to read much more discussion of these here in the future.
Donald Satz wrote (February 15, 2004):
I thnk there are a few harpsichord versions that outshine Jarrett's: Kenneth Gilbert, Scott Ross, Maggie Cole, Joseph Payne, Igor Kipnis, Wanda Landowska, Trevor Pinnock, Blandine Verlet, Gustav Leonhardt, Chirstine Jaccottet, Sergio Vartolo, Robert Hill, etc. I am glad that Jarrett recorded the work on a harpsichord instead of a piano; his smoothed lines are exacerbated by the piano. His is a nice version, but I do tire of the rounded contours, and he doesn't delve much into the emotional weight of the music when called upon.
[To Jack Botelho] Why do you prefer the GV without repeats? I know some folks who won't listen to any version not observing at least most of them, but I've not known of anyone who likes them absent.

Keith Jarrett Whisper Not (2 discs) ECM Records, ECM 1724/25, 2000 Cyberhome: www.ecmrecords.com Recorded live in 1999 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, Keith Jarrett's standards trio has rarely sounded more focused and brilliant. For one thing, a premium is put on brevity. There are none of the aimless 20-minute codas that one hears on some previous albums. Only "What Is This Thing Called Love," which opens disc two, exceeds the 10-minute mark. Otherwise, the tunes are played in the same kind of straight-to-the-point manner that Jarrett employed on his previous outing, The Melody At Night, With You. But quite unlike that supremely understated solo recital, these two discs feature plenty of spellbinding virtuosity. Jarrett taps into bebop streams of consciousness on "Bouncing With Bud," "Hallucinations," "Conception," and a very fast "Groovin' High." He introduces "Whisper Not," the ultimate mid-tempo hardbop theme, with the elegance of a classical impromptu. And on the ballads he's simply stunning. While "Chelsea Bridge," "'Round Midnight," "Prelude to a Kiss," and "When I Fall In Love" are wonderful, the highlight is the less well-known "All My Tomorrows." Gary Peacock takes the first solo, and then Jarrett takes flight - briefly, with sublime restraint - before bringing the tune to a wondrously hushed conclusion. Jack DeJohnette is wily, trading fours on the bop tunes with quick-reflexed invention. Often he'll locate just the right textural detail and execute it perfectly, such as punctuating the end of a rhythmic phrase with a firm knock on the splash cymbal. Peacock sounds terrific in both solo and support roles, and his bass sound is captured nicely on this unblemished recording.
