Who are you?
I'm an ordinary listener with a strong musical background. I have been around great music all my life, because my father made his whole living as a prominent violist, conductor, violinist, teacher, and composer. For the first twenty years of my working life I was a musician myself. For six years I studied music composition at the University of Illinois. I played bass trombone, piano, guitar, electric bass, and recorder. The bulk of my living during that time was made preparing music for publishing as a music engraver. (We used the old technique, utilizing music typewriters and graphic arts techniques.) These days I play only piano, mainly classical. I improvise some, but not really well.

Riffing with jazz pianist Keith Jarrett By Marius Nordal

Special to The Seattle Times Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett will perform at Benaroya Hall Friday night. E-mail this article Print this article Search archive In any conversation about music, bringing up pianist Keith Jarrett's name is sure to stir a lively debate. He has appeared on over 130 recordings, which range from him playing electric jazz-fusion music with Miles Davis to improvising marathon solo concerts during the 1970s. It was during these concerts that he began to explore every possible way to extract different sounds from the piano, including plucking the strings in a harp-like fashion and slapping on the wood with the palms of his hands as if it were a conga drum. His 1975 solo recording, "The Koln Concert," drew millions of new fans for Jarrett and is still regarded as a musical milestone from that era. In 1983, he formed his Standards Trio and is currently spending all of his time touring with it, exploring the Great American Songbook.

By David Rubien Jazz artists who came of age in the '50s, '60s or early '70s tend to place a premium on originality. These were years of rapid evolution, and players wanted to do their part to advance the music. So when, in their waning years, musicians from this era resort to playing tunes out of the standard repertory, it's generally a sign of spiritual exhaustion like when a movie actor lands a sitcom. It's interesting, then, that pianist Keith Jarrett one of the more unusual talents in the past 35 years of the music now finds himself in his most creative phase playing almost nothing but classics. Since forming in 1983, his trio with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock has staked a claim as the preeminent jazz group interpreting standards; it's probably the closest a piano trio has come to the Olympian heights of the late Bill Evans' trios. At the piano, Jarrett, 55, has an improvisational zeal matched by a technique that is equal parts meditation and explosion. He is one of the few living jazz pianists with an instantly recognizable sound. Little in his background suggests that standards would be his ultimate creative ticket. Growing up in Allentown, Pa., he was a prodigy, performing original pieces publicly while in grade school and gigging in jazz clubs as a teenager. Drummer Art Blakey claimed him as a member of his band, the Jazz Messengers, for a brief period in the mid-'60s, after which saxophonist Charles Lloyd introduced him to huge crowds with a group that featured DeJohnette.

His parents recognized at a very early age that he has both perfect pitch and an unusual talent for music, and so started him taking piano lessons at the age of three, usually considered much too young. He began composing music immediately. The Carr biography shows a legible and correctly written manuscript he wrote at that age. He played his first full-length concert, including intermission, at the age of six, ending with two of his own compositions." By Brian L. Knight
During the early 1970s, talented pianist Keith Jarrett was exploring the "New Thing" of jazz. Best known for his solo performances at the Koln Music Festival or his fusion explorations with Miles Davis, Jarrett recruited a capable band that shared a similar avant-garde musical vision. With saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Paul Motian, Jarrett deviated from the hard bop and fusion that he was playing in the late 1960s and decided to let things go free. Two albums that displayed this phase of Jarrett’s career are Expectations (1972) and Fort Yawuh Expectations was recorded in the studio in 1972 and Fort Yawuh For the Expectations Exile on Main Street

KEITH JARRETT: The Well-Tempered Jazz Band.
    by Mike Zwerin
    25 June 1998

In at least one small way, and maybe not so small, the 1990s have been the good old days.
The trio of Keith Jarrett, piano, Gary Peacock, bass, and Jack DeJohnette, drums, which has been playing their version of standards for more than a decade, is about as good as jazz gets. Or has ever gotten. Somebody told him they were the best trio in the world - ever. While he realizes that's not literal, it's "nice to hear."
Any objective listener with educated ears at least has to accept that possibility. And while we know that music is not a game and that there is no "best," for most of the 1990s, the Keith Jarrett Standards Trio was at the very least a candidate for the "best jazz band in the world" award.
Moldy figs trapped in the past could no longer complain about the present. And young jazz lions lionized on the cover of Time magazine might have paused to consider the jazzistic implications of Artur Schnabel's contention that nobody under 40 is qualified even to attempt Beethoven's last piano sonata (# 32, Opus 111).

Pianist Keith Jarrett: a gift of music
Pianist Keith Jarrett, who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, has released for this holiday season his first recording since falling ill. The Associated Press By CHARLES J. GANS
Associated Press NEW YORK Keith Jarrett wanted to give his wife Rose Anne a special Christmas gift. She had been unwavering in her love and support as the pianist battled a debilitating illness that left him wondering whether he would ever perform again. But he felt too weak to leave home to go shopping. Rather than an expensive gift, he could offer only something straight from his heart a gift of music. And what happened that Christmas, Jarrett says, was ''a small miracle'' that helped resurrect his career from the ''living death'' endured by those who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome. This holiday season, Jarrett is sharing that gift with the world: ''The Melody at Night, With You'' (ECM) is a jazz album of fragile beauty that touches the soul. Jarrett didn't know what to expect when he sat down at the piano in his studio, just steps from his home in rural western New Jersey, in December 1997. He hadn't played since November 1996, when he became ill during a tour of Italy. He could only listen to recordings that had won him worldwide acclaim: his solo piano concerts, the classical renditions of Bach and Mozart, and the fresh, imaginative interpretations of jazz standards with his trio. His Hamburg Steinway piano had just been customized to his specifications. Its new action enabled him to play extremely softly. He carefully placed microphones to capture the slightest nuance. Jarrett started to play, tentatively at first, and only a few minutes at a time. Gradually, he was able to tape nearly two hours of tender, intimate music.

    Down Beat
    Dec, 2001 by Ted Panken
"Jazz may be the only art form that asks the playernot the conductor, not any detached entities from the actual playingto find out who he is and then decide if it's good enough to speak from that self, and then that player has to live with who he said he was until the next time he plays. It's an incredibly rigorous and merciless thing, unless you're doused with drugs or something. And strangely enough, that rigorous thing is the representation in musical form of freedom. So jazz is a metaphor for important things." Keith Jarrett During Keith Jarrett's lengthy convalescence from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a debilitating illness caused by baterial parasites, the piano master managed to record a group of songs in his home studio as a Christmas present for his wife. The musicstripped to essentials, devoid of bravura or rhetorical excesswas unlike anything in his oeuvre, and ECM, his label since 1971, decided to release the tapes to the public. The Melody At Night With You became one of the best selling jazz albums of 1999.

Jarrett ends concert with magic moment By Marius Nordal

Special to The Seattle Times Pianist Keith Jarrett, pictured in an earlier performance, presented a program of 10 standard tunes and jazz originals at Benaroya Hall. E-mail this article Print this article Search archive Pianist Keith Jarrett has often described his playing as a process of redirecting audience members' energy right back at them in the form of music. This has made some of his concerts somewhat unpredictable because Jarrett can become touchy if he perceives an audience isn't doing its part to "complete the circuit." Random coughs or restless stirrings have been known to set him off. There was no lack of electricity at Benaroya Hall on Friday as Jarrett, accompanied by Gary Peacock (bass) and Jack DeJohnette (drums), ranged through a program of 10 standard tunes and jazz originals. The group seemed to be trying to get the feel of things as it opened with two medium-tempo standards, "Old Country" and "Everything I Love." A bit later, though, things began to get deeper as the trio explored the languid ballad "I Thought About You." It was in the slow pieces like this one that Jarrett wove his finest filigrees of sound. His blindingly fast runs seemed so wraith-like and free to go any direction that they resembled wisps of smoke being blown about by an ocean breeze.

If you know the music, then you will appreciate the video. Anyone who suggests that witnessing Jarret's physical contortions is somehow disturbing or distracting is only seeing half the picture. His emotional involvement with what he is creating only serves to enhance what is in itself a fine artistic and musical event. If I thought before that Keith Jarrett was merely a brilliant creative pianist, I now see that his brilliance is only achieved through his total involvement with what he is doing. No collection of Jarrett music is complete without witnessing this rare illustration of his total commitment to his art and his music.
