On finding this disc in the mail, my first reaction was a stoical, "Well, someone must review discs by saxophone quartets." But the disc has made for pleasing listening on several different occasions.....( )....While some may reasonably wish to hear the quartets of Debussy, Ravel and Roussel played only in their original versions, others may, like me, find the warm expressiveness of the saxophones a welcome and interesting change. The young Netherlanders who have played as the ASQ since 1982 are certainly fine musicians and have been generous in presenting three rather than the usual two quartets. Recommended. Raadslid vertrekt Abcoude Aan het begin van de na schorsing op 7 november hervatte raadsvergadering stapte raadslid Wim van Duuren (VVD) uit de gemeenteraad. In zijn verklaring daarvoor zei van Duuren onder meer het volgende: 'Het is een goed gebruik binnen de gemeenteraad dat er altijd van wordt uitgegaan dat personen integer opereren. Dat is ook van toepassing wanneer een gemeenteraadslid bepaalde directe of indirecte relaties heeft met een organisatie, een instelling of een groepering die een speciaal doel of belang voorstaat. Zo komt het voor dat raadsleden of collegeleden bedoelde relaties hadden of hebben met bijvoorbeeld OJC-Tumult, FC Abcoude, de Hockeyvereniging, de tennisvereniging, het zwembad en het project de Lage Wal, de Vereniging tot behoud van het dorpse karakter, Westhoek Wonen, de Mondriaanschool, de BBAW, de Historische Kring en, in mijn geval, met de lokale pers. Publiekelijk werd daarmee tot voor kort goed omgegaan. Actueel is de vraag die nu speelt over de wijze waarop de gemeente haar publicaties in de toekomst moet gaan verzorgen. Toccata III, voor piano, opus 49 Toccata III voor piano ontstond in 1997 voor Ivo Janssen. Het is mijn tweede toccata voor piano. De eerste dateert van de zomer van 1975! De verschillen zijn, zoals het ook hoort, groot. De eerste toccata is een kort bravourestuk met een lyrisch middendeel en in een stijl die, achteraf beschouwd, nog weinig persoonlijks heeft (vooral Franse voorbeelden). Een stuk ook met veel passagewerk als harmonische versiering De tweede pianotoccata is daartegenover vrijwel verstoken van ‘passagewerk’, van een alleen maar weelderig klankdecor, maar heeft des te meer noten, is des te meer een uitputtingsslag voor de pianist. Toccare wil zeggen ‘aanraken’, hier dus de toetsen van het klavier. Maar toccata’s, zoals die van Bach, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Prokofjef , zijn ook spelletjes met motoriek, tempo, contrapunt en ritme. De ogenschijnlijke losheid van veel toccata’s wordt bij nadere bestudering te niet gedaan door de strenge vormgeving ervan. Het uitgangspunt was bij het componeren van Toccata III even simpel als, bij nader inzien doortrapt: eenvoudige toonladderloopjes à la Czerny in oktaven leiden bijna als vanzelf tot een steeds complexer weefsel, om te beginnen door motiefjes te markeren met oktaaftransposities. Al componerende, met het geigertellertje dat me daarbij steeds weer terzijde staat, ontstond een grote driedelige vorm met in het midden een harmonisch kleurige dans (een knipoog naar Latijns-Amerika?). Verder zal het niemand ontgaan dat ook de geest van Schumann door het stuk waart. Zijn toccata heb ik altijd bij me gedragen als een van de mooiste en ook lastigste.

Leo Samama (1951) studeerde muziekwetenschappen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht en enkele jaren compositie bij Rudolf Escher. Van 1977 tot 1988 was hij docent muziek/­cultuurgeschiedenis aan het Utrechts Conservatorium. Van 1988 tot en met 1991 was hij als docent voor muziek van de 20e eeuw verbonden aan de vakgroep muziekwetenschap van de Faculteit der Letteren van Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. Van 1978 tot 1984 was hij recensent bij De Volkskrant , en van 1986 tot 1990 Samama freelance medewerker bij NRC/Handelsblad . Van 1988 tot 1994 was Leo Samama lid van het stichtingsbestuur van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest (en tevens bijzittend lid van de artistieke commissie van het orkest). Daarnaast was hij van 1988 tot en met 1991 lid van de artistieke adviesraad van Centrum voor Nederlandse Muziek in Hilversum, van 1990 tot 1993 lid van de redactiecommissie van de Bibliotheek Nederlandse Muziek en van 1991 tot 1993 artistiek adviseur van Centrum Nederlandse Muziek. Van 1992 tot 1994 was Samama artistiek adviseur van de NCRV met betrekking tot de publieke orkestprogramma's. Na de dood van zijn vader werkte Leo Samama van 1 november 1992 tot 1 augustus 1995 als impresario. In 1994 werd hij aangesteld als artistiek coördinator van het Residentie Orkest. Tevens programmeerde hij gedurende enkele jaren het aandeel klassieke muziek van de Dr Anton Philipszaal en de Nieuwe Kerk aan het Spuiplein. Ede Staal (1941-1986) is een van meest succesvolle streektaalzangers alIer tijden. Hij was componist en dichter en schreef onder het pseudoniem E. Paltrams (een anagram voor 'smartlap'). In het Gronings, maar ook in het Engels, Duits, Nederlands, Deens en Oost-Fries. Van zijn CD's zijn ruim 100.000 exemplaren verkocht. 'Het Hoogelaand' en 'Het het nog nooit zo donker west' groeiden uit tot ware klassiekers. Na zijn dood ontstond er een ware cultstatus rondom deze leraar Engels. In '96 zond de RVU een documentaire over hem uit en in 2000 trok de tentoonstelling 'Ode aan Ede' 65.000 bezoekers. Ook is een speciale Groninger liedprijs, de 'EDE-SON' naar hem vernoemd.

Kunstdagen Wittem 2003 Vooraf De Stichting Kunstdagen Wittem (SKW) stelt zich ten doel het organiseren van kunstuitingen in het heuvelland van Zuid-Limburg om daarmee de bewoners en de gasten die hier tijdens hun vakantie verblijven ‘dicht bij huis’ en laagdrempelig in aanraking te brengen met een hoog niveau van kunst. Dit kan in principe elke kunstvorm zijn, maar in de praktijk van de laatste jaren ligt het accent op: kamermuziekuitvoeringen, tentoonstellingen van werk van beeldend kunstenaars (schilders, grafici, beeldhouwers en fotografen) en een serie lezingen in relatie tot muziek en beeldende kunst of in een historische context. Het jaarlijkse festival, Kunstdagen genoemd, vindt plaats in de maand september in de historische Bibliotheek van het klooster in Wittem; een ongekend mooie locatie met uitstekende akoestiek. Een locatie die inmiddels door de Provincie Limburg als cultureel podium is aangemerkt. De Kunstdagen 2003 Op het gebied van de kamermuziek wordt niet alleen aansprekende muziek uit 4 eeuwen muziekgeschiedenis gebracht, maar wordt ook aandacht besteed aan minder gangbare of experimentele combinaties. In dit verband mag het optreden van de schrijfster Anna Enquist bijzonder genoemd worden. Haar voordrachten worden ondersteund door de bekende pianist Ivo Janssen, die werken van Prokofiev en Debussy ten gehore brengt. Door de samenwerking met de Stichting Festival d’Artagnan, die deze zomer een prestigieus festival organiseert, vinden er 2 barokconcerten plaats, die gratis bezocht kunnen worden.
