JANACEK (1866-1928): Sinfonietta - Taras Bulba

Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
Vaclav Neumann, conductor
Supraphon Born in Moravia (Czech Republic), Leos Janacek was a kind of Czech Debussy. Like the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, Janacek struggled against the expansionism of Germanic music. He wrote rough, brassy music which dipped heavily into the raw sounds of his native culture. The two works on this disc are excellent examples of Janacek's special brand of musical poetry. World Music enthusiasts should tune in without hesitation.
BARTOK (1881-1945): Music for strings, percussion and celesta - Concerto for orchestra

Healing Life's Hurts
"It's just not fair." "I wish I could take back what I said." "Forgive? Oh no, never!" "I feel so guilty."
Problems and pain, joy and satisfaction are part of every life. Your attitude affects your decisions, actions and feelings. With God's grace, the help of others and your own courage, you can handle life's hurts-the wounds you suffer, those you inflict, and the terrible events beyond human control.
Face reality
Pianist Byron Janis, 70, can again delight in playing music after an ordeal of physical and mental anguish. As a young man, Janis had been an international musical sensation. Even after a 1973 diagnosis of arthritis in both hands, he kept playing despite pain. By 1990, the pianist needed relief and agreed to surgery. This hurt his ability to play, sending him into a serious depression. "Music had been my whole life…and I couldn't see any alternative." In time, Janis realized he could write songs and teach. He even became a spokesman for the Arthritis Foundation. Thanks to new treatment, he is performing again "with the same fire." Janis adds, "I have had an extraordinary life. I have suffered a lot and have also had marvelous joy."

Borislav Strulev Borislav Strulev is rapidly establishing a reputation as a cellist of exceptional temperament and technique. Critics and audiences in all parts of the world have recognized him as one of the most exciting young instrumentalists to emerge from Russia in recent years.
This season Mr. Strulev debuts with Helsingborgs Symfonieorkester under Maestro Sebastian Weigle . He begins a recording project under French label Lyrinx to include solo and orchestral recordings. On his agenda are also several recitals on the East Coast, Mexico, and at the new auditorium in Leon-Spain. He will be featured on French this fall in a program devoted to meaning and importance of music hosted by composer Pierre Charvet . This season will also see the release of a CD The lost days on RCA-VICTOR red label where he collaborated with celebrated mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves and Brazilian jazz pianist Eliane Elias, as well as the Canadian motion picture “La Turbulence des fluides” produced by Luc Besson , on whose soundtrack Mr. Strulev is the featured artist.

The Rach 3 recordings page THE LATEST ADDITIONS: Bolet/Webb and Bolet/Fischer I got my first recording of Rachmaninoff's 3rd concerto on November 17, 1990, by Horowitz/Reiner on RCA. At that time, I didn't like the piece at all. However, many of my friends loved the concerto, so I wanted to give it a few more tries, by buying the two other commercial recordings Horowitz made, the Ashkenazy/Previn, and Argerich/Chailly's version, which was touted as "The Ultimate Rach 3!" by Philips. Still, none of them worked for me. I didn't like this concerto very much, until I decided to try to play it myself. Through learning the piece, I became familiar with it, and it was in December 1996 that I decided to collect recordings of this magnificient work. At first, I didn't want to get all versions, and thought about 20 would be enough. Then, in 1999, a pen pal told me about this guy named Scott Colebank who owned nearly all Rach 3's ever released. So, I thought I should aim higher and decided to buy all versions I could find. Since then, the pursuit of Rach 3's has brought me much joy and excitement. About 170 versions of this work have been issued commercially, and it is my goal to collect all of them. It certainly is a costly project, but that isn't where the biggest difficulty is. The hardest thing is finding these recordings. Of these well over 100 versions, only about 60 are in print and can be obtained in where I live, i.e. the U.S. An additional 15 or so (a very rough estimate) are in print but are not available in the States, but can still be purchased through the internet. Most of the remaining ones are extremely hard to find, and can be found only through hard work, help from an international network of collectors, lots of luck, and perseverance. My collection of Rach 3's has CDs/LPs/DVDs acquired from Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Monaco, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, and of course the United States.

Not only is this the best overall recording i have heard so far, it is also extremely inexpensive. What a bargain. I currently own about 18 recordings of this concerto and this one is in a tie for first place with the Recording by Rafael Orozco on the philips label(which is also a bargain priced set).
You really can't go wrong with this recording. The second concerto which is included on this cd is also very well played. Although it is played by a pianist I have never heard of. I find the tempos a bit distracting but after a while they grow on you and you learn to enjoy it. My recommended recording of the second concerto would have to be the one with Wild/Horenstein or Gutierrez/Maazel.

As a child prodigy, Janis became the first pupil of the famed pianist Vladimir Horowitz. Mr. Janis' recording of the Rochmaninoff Piano Concerto #3, re-released from a 1957 recording with the Boston Symphony, was given the Critics Choice Award for the best recording of that concerto by the prestigious British publication Classic CD Magazine. His 1996 EMI release of an all-Chopin CD was honored with the highly regarded National Public Radio Performance Today (NPR) Critics Choice for the most significant and meritorious classical recording of the year.1998 marked the 50th anniversary of his Carnegie Hall debut, and the 38th anniversary of his Moscow debut as the first American artist to be sent to the former Soviet Union under a US-USSR cultural exchange. I have been checking the first edition of this book out of the library for years and finally decided to get my own copy.
I really enjoy reading about all of the pianists and like the interview method used. However, I was disappointed in the drawings of the pianists and would have preferred the old photographs used in the first edition. The drawing of Glenn Gould was such a let down when compared to the lovely photograph of Glen enjoying his music that was used in the first edition. ÒYuan Sheng is a pianist of quality. He is also a delightful pianist, meaning that what he touches becomes piquant and full of grace. This is a rare quality. He possesses a smooth virtuosity in which to accomplish this. However, this does not mean that Mr. Sheng is not deep, because he is that too. Just listen to him, you will be charmed and touched!Ó -David Dubal Author of The Art of the Piano, Evenings with Horowitz Yuan Sheng has gained international recognition as a concert pianist through his extensive performances throughout the United States, Canada, China, Cuba, Finland, France, Italy, Malaysia, Morocco, Poland, and Spain. He is a laureate of Marsala, Erice, Jaen, Beijing and Havana international piano competitions. His participation in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw won him praise and comparisons with the great Polish pianist Ignaz Friedman, resulting in invitations by the Chopin Society to give recitals at the Salle Cortot in Paris and in Morocco. The renowned American pianist Andre Watts, upon hearing Yuan Sheng perform Liszt, compared his playing with that of Josef Hofmann. Yuan Sheng has performed as soloist with the Tenerife Symphony and the Gran Canaria Philharmonic in Spain, the Oradea State Philharmonic of Romania, the Central Philharmonic in Beijing, the Manhattan School of Music Symphony, and the National Orchestra of Cuba. He frequently performs duo-piano recitals with his wife, pianist Tara Hofmeister-Sheng and is a member of the Pantoum Trio with violinist Wei Tan and Cellist Marc Tagle.
