No 214 International Celebrity Pianist Comes to Leicester
A pianist known across five continents and with 130 CDs to his name is to return to Leicester to give a recital at the University of Leicester on Saturday 26 October 2002 at 7.30 pm. Australian-born Leslie Howard will perform opera highlights transcribed for the piano by Liszt – a composer on whom he is an acknowledged world authority. Music will include Verdi’s Don Carlos, Aida, and Simon Boccanegra, Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable, Wagner’s Rienzi and Das Rheingold, Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette and Bellini’s Norma. Although the tunes are not by Liszt these piano works are very much his own. Acclaimed by the Leicester Mercury in 2001 as, “A virtuoso with a fine technique and the capacity to make difficult pieces look effortless,” Leslie Howard has completed the largest recording project ever undertaken by any solo artist, having recorded Liszt’s complete piano works with Hyperion over 15 years. For this he has been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque on six occasions. “Leslie Howard has appeared with many of the world’s best-known conductors and orchestras, and claims to have the largest repertoire of any pianist who ever lived.

    Debbaut Orchestrates Noteworthy
    Revival of U. Music Program
This article orginally appeared in The Salt Lake Tribune , (November 20, 1994) Robert Debbaut is going from the hill to the hall Monday night. And he is bringing more than 60 top-flight student musicians and a world-class guest soloist with him. Debbaut, director of the two University of Utah symphony orchestras, will conduct his premier ensemble, the Utah Philharmonia, in a 7:30 concert at Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple. The highlight will be a performance of the original Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2, with British pianist Leslie Howard as soloist. The orchestra also will play Rimsky Korsakov's "Scheherazade" symphonic suite. It is the first time a Utah audience will hear the 45 minute Tchaikovsky Second in its entirety, Debbaut said. In a letter to his brother, the composer "disavowed" an abbreviated version and called it "a mutilation" of the original score, the conductor added. To Note Birthday : And in "Scheherazade," the orchestra will celebrate the 150th birthday of the Russian composer. "When we go downtown, we show the public where their tax dollars are going and the quality they're getting out of their investment in this university," said Debbaut, who took over the U.'s orchestral program in the fall of 1990. And Debbaut likewise lures stellar soloistslike Howard for the Abravanel Hall concerts.

Leslie Howard played his Mozart/Liszt recital from a well stocked memory but seemed to be on semi-automatic pilot. The Mozart variations were stolid and dull and the sonata mostly rushed through with no new insights to be heard en route (to restore my confidence in how well they can sound on modern piano, I returned to my bench-mark Tudor recording; Gilbert Schuchter Lacrimosa sounded well in Liszt's transcription but the third version of his Huguenots (Howard has recorded them all in his 95 Liszt CDs for Hyperion) is a meretricious monster, which brought predictable acclamation after its noisy ending despite many a splash on the way.

Everyone involved in the competition, and especially the host families with whom the participants stay, offers the participants a friendly and hospitable reception and helps create the atmosphere that gives the competition its ‘difficult-but-human’ reputation.
