You mean we'll have to re-buy? But the pure convenience of a CD soon won us over, even if a few of us were suspicious about that sound which seemed to come from nowhere, ungrounded. Now the DVD is upon us, in spades, and videocassettes will perhaps go the way of the dodo (or the LP, for that matter). The DVD a shiny little disc just like the CD is an inarguable blessing. One can skip around, just as on a CD, with no tiresome reversing or fast-forwarding. The DVD is mainly a bonanza for movies, I suppose just as with a videocassette but music-lovers have a reason to rejoice, too. All those who want to see their music should be pleased. And what is there to see? Well, mainly opera, of course, the most "visual" of the types of music. But there is utility in seeing orchestral concerts and recitals, too, if only to satisfy curiosity: What did so-and-so look like? How did he present himself? What was his magnetism, if any, in the hall?

Search TennesseeAnytime Department of Education Home Directory Help Center Solie Fott Receives Lorin Hollander Award July 31, 2001 NASHVILLE-Retired music educator Solie Fott received the Lorin Hollander Award from the Tennessee Arts Academy at a banquet in Nashville on June 19. The Lorin Hollander Award is given to a Tennessean whose influence has benefited arts education in general and/or the Tennessee Arts Academy in particular and has been awarded to such people as Steven Cohen, Jane Walters, and Martha McCrory. The award is named for the noted concert pianist who has been at the Academy on several occasions. “It is a pleasure to honor Solie Fott,” said Dr. Vernon Coffey, Commissioner of Education, “ for his many contributions to the arts in Tennessee.” Also honored at the June 19 banquet was Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Sheldon Harnick who is best known for his lyrics to the musical "Fiddler on the Roof." Solie Fott is retired professor and chair of the music department at Austin Peay State University. A graduate of George Peabody College for Teachers, he taught in Nashville Public Schools before pursuing a university teaching career. He had the major responsibility in the establishment of a Faculty Sub-Council to the Joint Presidents' Council of the state Board of Regents and served as its first chair. A past-president of the Tennessee Music Educators Association and the Tennessee String Teachers Association, Dr. Fott has been active in many professional organizations as well as a conductor, adjudicator, and clinician at various music festivals. He has performed with the Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville symphonies.

Teaching Shpachenko began studying piano, cello, and composition at the age of five, and at the age of thirteen won recognition as both pianist and composer, performing with the Kharkov Philharmonic Orchestra and placing second in the All-Ukrainian Young Composers Competition. Her piano teacher was Sima Shwartz. At the same time, she was a founding member of the Ukrainian Folk Hebrew Orchestra, where she performed as a cellist. She then emigrated to Israel, where she studied with Professor Victor Derevianko and participated yearly in the Tel-Hai International Summer Piano Festival and in many master classes. She received a full scholarship to study in Boston at the Longy School of Music with Professor Victor Rosenbaum. She graduated with an Undergraduate Diploma in 1997, having won various competitions and awards and performed with the Longy Chamber Orchestra. At age twenty-six, she is currently completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Southern California on a full scholarship, studying with Professor John Perry. Henry received a $10,000 cash award plus a New York debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall scheduled for October 7, 2002. Robert Henry is an internationally distinguished pianist whose performances have been recognized as technically brilliant, musically sophisticated, and full of personality. In the 2001-2002 season, Robert Henry won first place in four international piano competitions, the most recent of which was the inaugural 2002 Atlanta International Piano Competition, where he received an unexpected engagement with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 2004. He took first place in the 2002 Missouri Southern IPC, receiving a Carnegie Recital Hall debut. He also won first prize in both the 2002 Washington IPC and the 2001 New Orleans IPC. He is a prizewinner of many other competitions, including the 2001 Cleveland IPC. Since presenting his first solo recital at the age of 13, Mr. Henry has been heard at many universities, conventions, recital series, and on several NPR broadcasts. He made his orchestral debut at the age of 17, performing Prokofiev's Third Concerto to critical acclaim, and he has performed with several orchestras throughout the Southeast. Henry has upcoming solo performances at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C., Georgia, South Carolina, Indiana and Denmark, as well as orchestral engagements with Atlanta Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Acadiana Symphony, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and the FMM C Orchestra in the upcoming season.
