Home About Publications Contact Interview Education Production Interview Marie-Luise Hinrichs (Piano) Interview with the pianist Marie-Luise Hinrichs and Jan Moral on her latest CD with sonatas by Padre Antonio Soler (Amsterdam, December 3, 1999) Ms. Hinrichs, why do you concentrate on the Spanish composer Padre Antonio Soler at present? What exactly is so fascinating for you about Soler? There is still no final edition of Soler’s sonatas as the research on his music has not yet been completed. There were indeed some printing errors, but for me the fascination lay in the „non-printing errors". There was also this simplicity, a hidden sensuality – something entirely new which captured me. I thought to myself: Why is this wonderful music played so rarely in public? And, last but not least, I was fascinated by Soler’s life in a monastery, a life in seclusion or even isolation. At that time, I could identify with that kind of life, because during my intensive studies I lead a similar life, I was very much concentrated on myself. The work with Soler’s music gave some totally new „impulses" to me. Soler uses church modes which I have always loved. Then one discovers very modern harmonies, which are sometimes even Satie-like (e.g. Sonata d-minor S.R. 24).

Subj: Juliana Markova Date: From: ckhowell@ckhowell.com To: PianoWomenEditor@aol.com I came across this correspondence while looking for something else. I can shed some light on Juliana Markova though not her present whereabouts or career (if still active). Her teachers included Ilonka Decker-Kuszler in Milan (a Hungarian whose pupils included Annie Fischer, Edith Farnadi, Enrica Cavallo and Tiziana Moneta, just to list some of the women). I myself studied with Ilonka Deckers 1975-1992 and Markova had gone away by that time. Mme Deckers tried to keep in contact with former pupils and Markova was mentioned from time to time. I recall that she sent Mme Deckers a tape of a performance she gave of Rachmaninov 2 with the Chicago SO under Janos Ferencsik, this would be in the early 1980s. At about this time she also gave Tchaikovsky 1 with one of the London orchestras. Since she was playing in England at that time, it is perfectly possible that she stood in for an indisposed Nina Milkina.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Tatsuya Nagashima (Shaw-Tsu Chen) burst into the international limelight in 1993 as the first prize winner of Italy's Ibla International Piano Competition. Tatsuya showed extraordinary talent and promise at an early age. Born into a musical family- his father is a pianist, Pan-An Chen, and his mother is the late soprano, Min-Zu Wong- he began playing the piano at the age of four. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to Tokyo where he studied at the Musashino Academia Musicae. At the age of nine, Tatsuya gave his first public recital at Yamaha Hall of Taipei with his brother and father. By the youthful age of thirteen, he captured the first prize in the Japan National Piano Competition. Upon his graduation from high school, at the age of seventeen, he left his family to study music in the United States and has been residing here ever since. A stream of recognition, including numerous awards and first prizes at national and international competitions, mark his acceleration onto the international stage. biography
At the age of 14, Marie-Luise Hinrichs was called upon as last minute replacement for Stefan Askenase, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto KV 467 with great success.
This fortunate event made it clear to her that she was to become a concert pianist. She pursued her training in Hamburg, Essen and Cologne and has been greatly influenced by Yara Bernette, Pavel Gililov and Renate Kretschmar-Fischer, as well as by the Amadeus Quartet.
Ms. Hinrichs' concert activities have taken her to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Sydney Town Hall, Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in New York, Tanglewood Festival, and in Paris to the Chatelet and Théatre des Champs Elysées. Together with Christian Zacharias she has recorded on EMI Classics works for two pianos by Mozart. This CD was nominated for the 1998 "Cannes Classical Award".
With her fine interpretations, Marie-Luise Hinrichs has solicited widespread enthusiasm from her audiences.
Ms. Hinrichs particularly favors the music of the Spanish composer Padre Antonio Soler. His unique sonatas, inspired by original Spanish music, featured consistently in her solo performances. In 1999, she has recorded her first solo CD on EMI classics with piano sonatas by Padre Antonio Soler.
On her concert tours in 1999 in France, the Netherlands, and Spain, she had works by Soler as well as piano concertos by Beethoven and Schostakowitsch in her repertoire.

  • Sonata In D Flat, S.R. 88 Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: A Sophisticated Player of Sensuous Spanish Music Soler was almost half a century younger than Domenico Scarlatti with whom he is most often compared. Indeed he studied with Scarlatti. But he came along at a time when the contrapuntal baroque style was giving way to the oncoming 'style galant' (sometimes called 'rococo') and thus there is less counterpoint. He is Spanish through and through and the Spanish melorhythms are apparent in all he wrote. Much of the music on this CD is gently melancholic and in minor keys, although there are a number of faster, brighter pieces. I had never heard of Marie-Luise Hinrichs but I'm wondering why. This woman is a superb pianist. The thing that strikes one first is her touch; she has a striking ability to coax lovely tone from her piano, and she possesses a velvety legato when required. Her playing has a sensuosity with no need to be propped up by speedy virtuosity, although she certainly has keyboard technique to spare. Another way of saying this is that she is making music, not showing off.
