Reviewed by Peter Grahame Woolf Bach's most popular work for solo keyboard scores over fifty entries in the Classical Catalogue and these two, received recently, offer a fascinating evening's listening played in tandem. Johann Sebastian was sparing with performance instructions, so there is ample scope for individual interpretation; both are recommendable. Terence Charlston explains how the Italian musical style pervades Bach's keyboard works, even though distant travel was impossible for him and a thirst for music of other lands had to be satisfied through contact with visiting musicians and by studying scores. Charlston inaugurated the Historical Practice course as Head of Early Music in the Royal Academy of Music, and he knows everything about how to make his chosen instrument expressive, by rhythmic variety and subtle agogic treatment of key moments, even though the harpsichord lacks the piano's sustaining pedal, or the 'swell' of later organs. He is equally an emotional and a scholarly musician, and his playing will convince some collectors who prefer their Bach on the piano.

ANGELA HEWITT TO APPEAR WITH THE AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
April 29, 2003 : Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt will tour with the Australian Chamber Orchestra nationally throughout May. The ACO trace a fascinating progression and pay homage to a remarkable musical dynasty of the Bach family, with guest Hewitt "one of the most outstanding Bach pianists of our time" (The Sunday Times). Angela Hewitt has performed throughout North America and Europe, as well as in Japan, Australia, China, Mexico and the former Soviet Union. From her triumph in the 1985 Toronto International Bach Piano Competition and her subsequent recordings, Angela Hewitt has been hailed as "nothing less than the pianist who will define Bach performance on the piano for years to come" (Stereophile). In 1994, she embarked on a ten-year project to record all of the major keyboard works by Bach. During this tour Australian audiences will experience this "keyboard genius" (The Evening Standard, London) performing repertoire that is the very core of her being. This "special and uniquely enchanting" (BBC Music Magazine) pianist continues to captivate and charm audiences with her musicianship and virtuosity. Angela Hewitt is a must for everyone's 2003 musical calendar.

Delivered at breakfast time and straight onto the CD player, the Italian Concerto was just the thing to start the day! The Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt Messiaen The Italian Concerto is one of Bach's happiest works, with dancing movements framing a profound Andante . Hewitt finds just the right airy touch and tone, and she can be heard to think the music along; no automatic pilot or interpretation set in concrete. There are occasional little expressive surges, not possible on the harpsichord, but never beyond tasteful boundaries. They sound as if they would differ from performance to performance with the feeling of the moment. The half hour French Overture is a grand affair, its Overture 12 minutes long, with strongly dotted rhythms giving strength and nobility, followed by the usual series of short dance movements, a more substantial and moving Sarabande at their centre. The Duets are later equivalents to the 2-part Inventions, composed

Angela Hewitt , the leading Bach specialist of today's pianists, had a lengthy queue afterwards for Holy Ink (the CD signing ritual). Purchasers of her new CD, which includes all the fascinating arrangements in this programme, should not be disappointed.
Bach played on the piano has been popular through several generations, and continues to be so with good reason during the relatively new 'authentic' era; the possibilities for expressive dynamic shading and colouring with pedal are hard to relinquish. Angela Hewitt enlivens every piece she plays; seen live her palpable enjoyment is a tonic and with her beauty and poise she has the audience in the palm of her hand, delaying applause with ease to achieve continuity within groups. The two Toccatas were given 'straight' and the rest of the programme sampled arrangements of famous pianists and composers of the past, providing a historical perspective of changing tastes. No-one listening to Angela Hewitt was inclined to carp at their romanticism.

I had not heard of this pianist before. I looked her up on the Internet, and she certainly is a hard-working person with a big repertoire. To those who have heard her, what is her style for Bach, and how would you find she performs compared to GG?

    Biography
Born into a musical family (her father was the Cathedral organist in Ottawa, Canada), Miss Hewitt began her piano studies at the age of three, performing in public at four, and a year later winning her first scholarship. In her formative years she also studied violin, recorder, singing, and classical ballet. At nine she gave her first recital at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music where she studied from 1964 to 1973. Miss Hewitt then studied with French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa from which she earned her Bachelor of Music degree at the age of eighteen. In 1994 she embarked on a recording of all of the major keyboard works of Bach for Hyperion. The Inventions, French Suites and Partitas have all been included in Gramophone magazine's 'Editor's Choice' and are receiving worldwide acclaim for their artistry, 'effortlessly eclipsing all competitors' (Gramophone, 1997). Her recording of Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier was chosen by two London Sunday Times critics as one of their 'Top Ten for 1998', and won a Juno Award in Canada. An avid chamber-music player, Angela has also appeared extensively with singers and instrumentalists in North America and Europe. Her lecture-recitals on Bach and her frequent masterclasses are widely appreciated by students and teachers alike. Dedicated to keeping 'live music' alive, she has recently been a founding member of Piano Six a project involving six Canadian pianists who take music to the rural communities of Canada.

The final evening of the annual state convention of the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC) culminates with a recital by the convention artist. So it was that on Monday evening at 8:30 pm, at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey, pianist Angela Hewitt stepped into the limelight and presented a program for a packed house of works by Bach, Mozart, Messiaen and Liszt.
It has often been said that at a piano recital you can tell in the first ten seconds whether the artist's attitude is "I am a concert pianist and I am going to amaze you with my virtuoso technique" or rather "I love these pieces and I want to share them with you." It was the latter attitude that dominated the evening and contributed so much to its success. The opening work was Bach's Concerto in the Italian Style . You might wonder what an artist can possibly find new to say in such a well-known and venerable masterpiece. But, something new Ms. Hewitt did find, and what it was is a very personal and individual expressivity that is not afraid to interrupt the motoric flow of the work's first movement with subtle agogic delays or
