R ichard and John Contiguglia are identical twins who have collaborated as a piano duo since they were five years old. Throughout their career critics have responded in superlatives to their unique musical partnership. Following the release of their historic recording of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, transcribed for two pianos by Franz Liszt, now a collector's item, critic Edward Tatnall Canby called the Contiguglias "the most profoundly musical pair of piano virtuosi of this century." Records and Recording proclaimed that "they have given the two-piano medium a whole new dimension. The Contiguglias stand apart in a lofty world of their own, unrivaled and supreme." Byron Belt, for Newhouse News Service, called the Contiguglias "foremost among today's duo-pianists." Richard and John were born of Italian immigrant parents in Auburn, NY, the last children, and second set of twins, in a family of seven children. Without a doubt, the most extraordinary musical event of the twins' youth was a performance in their home town, when they were 12 years old, of a group of two-piano pieces in the middle of a solo-piano recital by the legendary pianist-composer, Percy Grainger. T he American identical twins, Richard and John Contiguglia, are among the most acclaimed and versatile piano duos in the world today. Almost 40 years since their highly acclaimed London debut in 1962, which the London Daily Telegraph described as setting "a new standard for this intimate form of music-making," Richard and John are now the proprietors of their own recording company, Gemini CD Classics . Their first releases, Schubert Piano Duets - The Final Year and Live From The Holland Liszt Festival - Duos of Franz Liszt for One and Two Pianos , reflect their lifelong commitment to popularizing the great body of music for two pianists. Their recordings and performances of Bartók's Suite for Two Pianos, Op. 4b , of Liszt's transcription for two pianos of Beethoven's 9th Symphony and of Liszt's Operatic Paraphrases on Don Giovanni, Norma, and La Sonnambula

She was born in 1890. Thirteen years later, during the year that is indelibly associated with the Wright brothers' first aircraft flight, were born three giants of the keyboard: Vladimir Horowitz in Russia, Rudolf Serkin in Austria and Claudio Arrau in Chile. Each was to go on to a stellar career - and there's a fair amount of good film footage available. On this DVD, we see and hear Arrau in a flawless account of Liszt's Gnomenreigen, Horowitz in the much aired - and magnificently addressed - Etude in D sharp minor by Scriabin. Serkin is superb in Schubert (an excerpt from the Sonata in B flat, D 960) and a maddeningly brief snip from Beethoven's Les Adieux Sonata. On this fascinating DVD, the main work on offer is Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 4 with Arrau a magisterial soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti.

"Artur, you will never be a pianist. You are a musician." These prophetic words were uttered by the legendary early 20th century teacher, Theodor Leschetizky, to his young student, Artur Schnabel. "In later years, Schnabel took special delight in repeating Leschetizky's prophecy as a paradox, because he himself could never make any distinction between pianist and musician, even for his pupils. And, in his own case, the musician and the pianist were completely fused - though the pianist remained always the servant of the musician."*

REFLECTION: MYRA'S WAR By Peter Kyle
In Dance we learn that each physical action performed has a reason for being, and has a complementary response. When you lift your leg high into the air, the body adjusts in order to maintain equilibrium. There is an actual shift of weight in space, timed in coordination with the requisite action of the body. This is a beautiful thing to behold, the body moving in good coordination. It even remains beautiful when performed in less-than-good coordination, for it reveals the ever-resilient body in the midst of learning how to progress, how to be while addressing the task(s) immediately at hand. In short, it displays our human instinct for adapting without the need for destructive measures.

59. THE HUNGER OF A WARTIME CORVETTE SAILOR FOR MUSIC
All through the War, amidst falling bombs and rockets, dame myra hess, the legendary English concert pianist gave concerts for the sailors, soldiers and airmen
http://home.ca.inter.net/~fcurry/writing/music.html
THE HUNGER OF A WARTIME CORVETTE SAILOR FOR MUSIC Countless Canadians have made their way to Trafalgar Square during their visits to London. There, they have joined the crowds, fed the pigeons, admired the towering tribute to Nelson and his glorious triumph-and more than likely, admired the fine 16th century church that towers on one side of the Square. St. Martin in-the-Fields. My first visit to this historic heart of London was far removed from that of a tourist. I was a wartime sailor who spent five and a half years on a corvette in the North Atlantic convoys and a bangor in the English Channel scraping the beaches at Omaha Beach in the pre-dawn darkness of June 6, 1944. Apart from the constant presence of death and destruction, the terrible life on wartime ships, the relentless and unforgiving North Atlantic in all its furies, I knew what it meant to be cut off from all the finer elements of life in a peaceful world. There were a few paperback books circulating on a corvette, a handful of old fashioned records playing the Andrew Sisters over and over again, no concerts, no Saturday radio broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera, no symphony music, a total absence of anything to soothe the soul of a wartime sailor isolated by the relentless unending forces of War. Our ship, operating non-stop in the English Channel, along the French Coast from Brest to Bordeaux made brief returns to The Solent off Portsmouth and on rare occasions, seaboats would lug a few off duty sailors ashore for a strict twelve-hour shore leave. A few of us would quickly find the railway station and catch the next train to London for our first encounter with this great city that had suffered and survived the terrible bombing and now facing the terror of German V-1's and V2 rockets.(We had already encountered them in the Channel)
