MYRA HESS (1890 - 1965) Born in Hampstead, Myra Hess was the youngest of four children. She commenced playing the piano at the age of five and in due course passed the junior examinations of the Trinity College of Music. By the age of seven she was a student at the Guildhall School of Music where she was influenced by Julian Pascal and Dr Lando Morgan. On gaining a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music she became a student of Tobias Matthay, one of the greatest piano teachers of her time and it was his deep insight into both the psychological and technical aspects of playing that was responsible for her early maturity as a concert pianist. Myra Hess made her debut with a recital at the Aeolian Hall when she was seventeen and this resulted in an engagement to play the Beethoven G Major Concerto with Sir Thomas Beecham. The outstanding success of her performance gained her recognition lmost immediately and within a few years she was playing in most parts of Europe. Of her first New York concert in 1922 the well known critic W. J. Henderson wrote: "She is a great pianist without limitation" and praised the imagination and sensitivity shown in the "subtly wrought details of her readings and the singular aptness of her purpose" Myra Hess went on to play all over the U.S.A. and with all of its major orchestras.

Stephen Kovacevich
There can be few pianists who are on par with Stephen Kovacevich. His mastery of piano, his superb, profound, often radical, approach to music, especially to those of Beethoven, has made him one of the most respected pianist this world has ever had. Born in 1940, in Los Angeles, Kovacevich has studied with Lev Shorr. He made his début in San Francisco in 1951. During his younger years, Kovacevich had enjoyed playing his favourite composers' works - Chopin and Liszt. He went to London in 1959 to study with Dame Myra Hess, as a scholarship student. It is through Dame Myra Hess that Kovacevich fell in love with Beethoven. Even though many years has passed, Kovacevich still pays his tribute to Dame Myra Hess, for she has greatly influence his playing and musicianship. Kovacevich made his London début in Wigmore Hall in 1961. He has since travelled around the world, giving solo recitals and appearing as soloist in concertos. Kovacevich is also active in recording industry. He is currently working on a project to record all Beethoven's piano sonatas, under contract with EMI. Recommended Listening
Do you speak Chinese? Probably not. It might be a fascinating subject to study, but unless you are from a Chinese background, or were a particularly gifted student in this field it would most likely seem quite foreign. Many of us do feel a connection to a language other than English, perhaps Hebrew or Italian. We may not be fluent in it but it carries an emotional resonance; we feel a connection to it (as would a Chinese person to his language). I like to think of music in these terms; as language. And I'd like my students to have the opportunity to hear and feel music at least as closely as a second language; closer perhaps, since there are no words! A lifetime of listening to music has helped me to enjoy it as I do. So I thought a list of recommended recordings and artists might help my students and their parents find some of the music that's "spoken" to me over the years. Unlike practicing, which must be organized and disciplined, this listening is just for enjoyment, though it can lead to thinking, enthusiasm, mellowness (depending on the music at hand!) and increased appreciation for the arts. It can become part of the atmosphere of your home. And, especially if a child has not yet "learned" that classical music is "boring", a parent's interest can send a signal to a child that it may be something worthwhile.
