(Detailed Index) At the Movies By Dan Craft Entertainment editor Mr. Helfgott's oddball opus Shine MPAA rating: R Movies this week "Shine" is a sort of triumph-of-the-fractured-spirit drama about what happens when artistic genius and dysfunctional upbringing collide head-on, sending the genius part of the artist's psyche twirling off into its own privately dysfunctional orbit. That would be, of course, madness not an uncommon realm for genius to visit from time to time. Although film portraits of artists as troubled young men are a fairly common breed, "Shine" is something else again. This uplifting but uncloying Australian-made account of the life and times of real-life classical pianist David Helfgott has been structured along the compositional lines of the concertos favored by its artist. Meaning: varying movements of different tempos and rhythms, recurring leitmotifs, repeated refrains, periodic crescendos and virtuoso solo work against an orchestral background. The three movements of Mr. Helfgott's opus are divided between his early childhood in the 1950s, his adolescence and young manhood in the '60s and '70s, and, finally, his middle-aged mental dysfunction of the early 1980s.

True story shines on screen By Kelly Xintaris Daily TV / New Media Editor "Shine" is an Australian import based on the life of classical pianist David Helfgott, a man blessed with prodigious musical talent, but cursed by the pressures of an over-zealous father (Armin Mueller-Stahl). Newcomer and prime Oscar-candidate Geoffrey Rush plays Helfgott, who first appears scampering through the rain toward a small cafe, seemingly euphoric. Looking haggard and acting hyperactive, Rush demands attention from the opening scene, ending his staccato outbursts with, "Oh yes, the tragedy of it all, the tragedy." Rush's performance rightfully deserves praise, as he comfortably fills the shoes of a man who suffers and succeeds because of his obsessive relationship with music. In a refreshingly different move, director Scott Hicks ("Strictly Ballroom") then cuts to flashbacks of Helfgott's childhood and troubled adolescence. Most of the film centers on Helfgott's growing years, which send him spiralling toward a nervous breakdown. Under the reign of an overprotective, controlling father who was traumatized by the Holocaust, young David (Alex Rafalowicz) grows into a fragile, socially overwhelmed teen-ager (Noah Taylor). Rafalowicz is adorable and convincing in the role of little Helfgott, a boy who never knew the release of a free-wheeling childhood because he was too busy fulfilling his father's expectations. By the time Rafalowicz passes the baton to Taylor, some sort of catastrophe seems imminent. For audiences who like a little unpredictability with their dramatic tension, "Shine" may not seem as brilliant as the hype surrounding the film would have you believe. Yes, this is one of 1996's brighter cinematic offerings, but no, it is not the Hope Diamond of bio-dramas.

Then, the subject of the movie "Shine" got a standing ovation. The Australian pianist, who triumphed over mental illness, smiled broadly and bowed Tuesday night as a sold-out crowd of 2,000 people, who paid $50 each, roared their approval in glittering Symphony Hall. The audience loved it, but one critic didn't. "Helfgott is a radiant, endearing and exasperating presence, who runs from the stage door to the piano," Richard Dyer wrote in The Boston Globe. The performance, Mr. Dyer continued, "was without phrasing, form, harmonic understanding, differentiation of style, and often basic accuracy; worst of all, it was without emotional content. ... The sad fact is that David Helfgott should not have been in Symphony Hall last night, and neither should the rest of us." Monday, January 13, 1997 Brian Remick A- David Helfgott "David Helfgott plays Rachmaninov" (BMG) There is a movie playing in theaters across the country that will drain the tear ducts and leave the mind paralyzed. That movie is called "Shine." Its focus on the hardships facing the talented concert pianist, David Helfgott, comes supported by soulful piano pieces which help to create an emotional setting just tender enough to tear down the boundaries between film viewer and movie screen. Capturing this mood, Helfgott's recent release calms the body while enchanting the mind. Though not all of the Rachmaninov pieces make appearances in the film, they certainly echo its sense of tragedy and personal triumph. The music can be appreciated by those who haven't even seen or heard of the film. Starting with the swiftly uplifting "Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 30, in D minor," and moving into "Four Preludes," a mass of twittering notes lighter than air, it becomes clear that Rachmaninov never gets boring. "Sonata No. 2 in B Flat Minor, Op. 36" provides a clear insight into the frailty of dancing fingers and what a life of such focus can lead to. Helfgott reveals that the vocation of concert pianist almost invariably will end in madness, as sounds this mystic must transfix one to a world unlike our own, and leaves one to question how other musicians of this caliber stay sane. Vanessa VanderZanden A Art of Noise "The Drum and Bass Collection" (Discovery) Classic songs like AON's collaboration with Tom Jones on Prince's "Kiss" have been transformed into uninteresting beats that lack any originality. Flyright's mix of "Peter Gunn," which is almost impossible to get wrong, doesn't even have the same tune. "The Drum and Bass Collection" doesn't go much beyond its title for the majority of the album. The original structure of songs like "Something Always Happens" and "Yebo" are all but gone. While the mixes on the album are decent, especially ILS's rendition of "Art of Love" and J. Majik's "Camilla," their similarities to the originals are so faint that they practically don't belong on the album.

Movie Reviews by Mark Leeper Shine (1996) The Whole Wide World (1996) We still don't know much about Mark Leeper , but he writes a damn good review! Shine (1996) SHINE is a study of the shattered life of a child prodigy pianist whose father, a Holocaust survivor, totally dominated and controlled. While the film is supposed to be uplifting in that David Helfgott could salvage something of his life, it still seems to be pitifully poor consolation and a tragic waste of a life and of talent. Rating: +1 (-4 to +4) There are some minor spoilers in the plot description. SHINE is a true story, a biography of a sort of local celebrity in Australia. The man is eccentric to the point of being nearly autistic but is also a brilliant pianist. David Helfgott is a man with many personal demons, some real and some imagined, who was a musical prodigy but could not face the pressures that a musical career placed on him. The greatest of all the pressures came from his father, a man of huge rages who wanted to control David like he would control a puppet. What is interesting in the film is the affect that music has on David. As a boy music is a negative influence on him, dragging him down into the strange psychological state he eventually reaches. He is eventually even forbidden to play the piano for fear of the effect it will have on him. Yet the same music is also what pulls him out of that slump, returning some semblance of a life and even a career to him. Also remarkable is how people seem to keep finding David endearing. In spite of his many problems and the infinite patience that is required for dealing with him, the adult David seems to have the charm somehow to attract admirers and people who are willing to care for him. The adult David strikes one as having an intelligent, but uncontrolled mind. He talks as fast as his fingers move playing the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto, but he jumps from idea to idea and drops each for the next.
