Books and movies are, we know, very different art forms, and it's unwise to search in the one for the qualities we admired in the other.
"Shine," the true story of the Australian child prodigy David Helfgott, has been extravagantly praised, with some justice, as a "film of the year" (of course, it's early yet). Director Scot Hick's account of a phenomenally gifted young pianist whose brilliant career was derailed by the combination of his Jewish emigre father's obsessive demands and his own insecurities until he was rescued by the love of a good woman, contains more than enough Freudian archetypes to satisfy the contemporary hunger for such stories.
That it should also have, as its backdrop, the ash-strewn landscape of Auschwitz makes it all the more thrilling as a tale of love triumphing over adversity.
It's also generally true that the better the film, the worse the spinoff. So it comes as no surprise that this book (first published in Australia), which presents itself as "the true story that inspired the movie," should be not merely worse, but actually even less informative about this "true story" than the film.

DAVID HELFGOTT: We had no money for food and no roof over our head, just a warehouse. What a memory! And yet, Dad went and spent his last savings on a piano. And what about... how's that for priorities? I thought how my father must have loved me if he wanted me to play the piano. But that was a different time.
ALEX TARNEY, REPORTER: David Helfgott was born in 1947, the son of Polish-Jewish migrants Peter and Rachel. As a teenager, he showed prodigious talent, and the music world hailed him as a genius. At 19, he was invited to study piano at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London.
DAVID HELFGOTT: Well, I'd say the first three years was relatively, reasonably calm.

"Shine" is the best feature film I've seen so far this year (although I'm still totally enamored of the documentary "Paradise Lost" in my number 1 slot). Scott Hicks, an Australian director more known for his documenaries, has done a masterful job presenting Jan Sardi's screenplay about the life of a tortured pianist to the screen. He's assembled his film as a three movement concerto, first taking his time to establish the very young David Helfgott and David's family background, then going into overdrive as David Helfgott as a young man suffers through the conflict of how his success and the pursuit of his dreams tears him away from his family and finally slowing the pace again as the older David is brought back into real life from an institution by the love of several women.

David Helfgott, inspiration for 'Shine,' gives surprise performance
LOS ANGELES (AP) It was like a scene from "Shine" itself.
Australian pianist David Helfgott, whose triumph over mental illness was depicted in the Oscar-nominated film, had a truly shining Hollywood moment during Monday's Academy Awards presentations.
The Shrine Auditorium crowd rose to its feet in applause when Helfgott walked on stage for a brief recital of "The Flight of the Bumble Bee."
Mouthing apparent self-help mantras to himself, as his practice during performances, Helfgott bowed, then sat down at the piano.
He mssed some notes and some of his phrasing seemed a bit disjointed, but Helfgott seemed in control during the short piece. It also was without the moans and grunts Helfgott has been criticized for during his current tour, which includes a Los Angeles performance Tuesday night. And the Academy Award audience loved it. Out of the gloom, a genius reborn
By SAMELA HARRIS Meeting pianist David Helfgott is like tumbling out of everyday life into a softly eccentric wonderland of sounds. But David, 38, is a world unto himself and his tale is one of genius, tragedy and triumph. The extraordinary WA musician has recently returned to the concert platform after a decade of psychiatric treatment and musical obscurity, shepherded by a woman's love. He is in Adelaide to give a recital at Edmund Wright House tonight. Peering myopically through milk-bottle-bottom lenses, he proffered a warm, long-fingered hand and his murmurous voice began a strange rhythmic exploration of the sound of new names: "Sssam-sam-samela-sam..." Then, as if magnetically drawn to the piano, he sat at the sleek Steinway, caressed its keys and filled the ornate old room with the intricate sounds of Liszt's La Campella while transforming his name-refrain into friendly serenade. Rocking on the piano stool, sometimes bowing his head to the keys, singing, sighing and occasionally asking for a cigarette yet never interrupting the fluidity of his music he resembled no other concert pianist. As the musical prodigy son of impoverished Polish migrants, David Helfgott was, at 12, the youngest to enter the ABC's annual WA State concerto and vocal competitions, which he went on to win six times.
