Already the sea has withdrawn far away
Like seaweed softly caressed by the wind
On a sandy bed you stir as you dream
Already the sea has withdrawn far away
But in your half-open eyes
Two little waves stayed behind
Two little waves to drown me.

    MARV GOLDBERG'S
    The Pyramids (Jay-Dee)
    By Marv Goldberg
based on an interview with Roland Douglas, Jr.
The Pyramids were one of the many groups that recorded for legendary publisher, songwriter, and label owner Joe Davis over the years. Like their labelmates, the Chestnuts, the Pyramids hailed from New Haven, Connecticut.
The origins of the Pyramids go back to around 1955, at the Mount Zion Seventh Day Adventist Church, on Dickerman Street. There, some choir members got together to sing gospel music. Joe Stallings (tenor lead), Hubert Saulsbury (first tenor), Roland Douglas, Jr. (baritone), and Richard Foster (bass) comprised this nameless quartet.
    We
After this, the usual depression set in: no money and few jobs. Doug McClure left, and was replaced by Richard Freeman. This only lasted a short while, however, and it was soon all over for the Pyramids. Both Richard Freeman and Roland Douglas went off to join Fred Parris in the Scarlets/5 Satins. While Richard stayed, Roland didn't, making no recordings with the group.
Today, Roland is still singing, although he's gone back to his gospel roots (he's with a group called One Accord, from the Charity Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hartford). Joe Stallings lives in Arizona and Richard Foster is in upstate New York; Hubie Saulsbury has since passed away.

BOBBY MARTIN AT "THE PLACE" Bobby Martin, American colored trumpeter who returned from a long stay in Europe recently, now has a four piece band at The Place, in Greenwich Village. Martin, who went to Europe with Sam Wooding's orchestra in the early twenties, remained to work in England and throughout the Continent, and gained the reputation of an outstanding musician. His band at The Place includes Richard Edwards, piano; Ural Dean, drums; and Samuel Steede, guitar. ERSKINE HAWKINS GETS LOUIS PART Erskine Hawklns, trumpet-playing bandleader has been signed for the role of the Negro trumpeter in the stage adaptation of "Young Man With A Horn", Dorothy Baker's Bix novel. The part, first assigned to Louis Armstrong, was left vacant when Armstrong joined the cast of "Swingin' The Dream". Ella Fitzgerald will also have a speaking and singing role in the dramatization of "Rick Martin's" life. WHO'S WHO IN SHAKESPEARE Zutty Singleton, not Sidney Catlett, is playing drums with Bud Freeman's orchestra in "Swingin' The Dream" - no matter what the programs and reviews say. Catlett is still playing in Armstrong's orchestra at the Cotton Club.

The British Nuclear Fuel plant five miles south at Sellafield is the most important employer in the area. A TRIBUTE
    GOODYBE, CHARLES BROWN
by Alan Warner The influential blues singer-songwriter-pianist Charles Brown died on
Thursday, January 21, 1999. Born in Texas City, Texas, in 1922, he was a major force in west coast blues in the 1940's when he joined Johnny Moore's Three Blazers.
He was a significant influence on Ray Charles and over the past decade,
was the subject of a major career revival, sparked by Bonnie Raitt asking
him to join her on tour. Charles' endless love for classical music and popular love songs shone through each and every performance and his energy and warmth flowed across the stage as a whole new generation discovered his glowing talent. A contemporary of Nat 'King' Cole in his early days, Charles helped popularize what became known as 'cocktail blues'; indeed, tho' his songs often told tragic tales, his velvet-coated voice overcame the subject matter, hypnotizing the listener as he caressed each well-crafted lyric.

MARY PEARSON: YOU AND I Liner Notes by Michael Bourne "Lazy Afternoon" is the perfect prelude, instantly drawing the listener in. "Take Five" is all longing and suggestion and seduction. "The More I See You" is considered by Mary to be the definitive song on the album. Other highlights include the three original love songs by Mary, songs that, once heard by other singers, I expect will be sung more and more. You And I is a virtual suite of love songs, a seamless tapestry of romance. "You And I is about intimacy, devotion, seduction, passion and love. It's you and I from beginning to end." It's also the first album from the first singer signed to Arkadia Jazz and one hopes, just the first of many to come from this uniquely lyrical jazz singer, Mary Pearson. Michael Bourne "Singers Unlimited", WBGO, Newark MARY'S THANKS Mary Pearson Lyrics I Am Yours/You Are Mine There's precious little we can depend on Some things may change others never come to be Expectation often turns to disappointment But not this time. I'm here for you. You're here for me
