1895 - The first automobile race in America began, as six cars traveled from Jackson Park in Chicago to Waukegan, Illinois. J. Frank Dureyea was the winner, traveling at a blazing speed of 7 and 1/2 miles per hour! It took him 7 hrs. 53 minutes to make the trek (bathroom stops not included). He won $2,000 for the effort. 1922 - The first skywriting display happened on this day. The words “Hello USA” were written in the sky over New York City. It was a short time later that the invention of Cyril Turner was applied for commercial use. 1932 - Groucho Marx performed on radio for the first time. Using his fast-paced, ingenious patter, he invented a new form of comedy that delighted audiences from coast to coast. 1942 - Coffee rationing began in the United States, lasting through the end of World War II. 1942 - A tragic fire at the famed Cocoanut Grove night club in Boston, MA killed nearly 500 people, including popular western actor Charles ‘Buck’ Jones. It is believed that the fire started in a corner of one of the lounges when a customer unscrewed a light bulbs to provide some privacy for himself and his date. The bartender ordered a busboy to replace the bulb, but the lounge was so dark that the busboy lit a match to find the socket. A short time later, flames appeared and spread to a nearby tinsel palm tree. When the ceiling (festooned in billows of blue satin fabric) exploded into flames, the entire crowd stampeded. The Cocoanut Grove fire prompted major efforts in fire prevention and control for U.S. nightclubs and other related places of assembly.

Richard W. Smith, Composer Page             Richard “Rich” Smith was born in 1965 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  His musical interest began to show itself around his 14th year, when he began teaching himself to play the piano.  Within a few years, he was regularly performing in the Salt Lake area and soon began composing his own material.  His musical ability was noticed by a staff producer at Osmond Studios and Rich soon began working as an intern, interested in anything that anyone would teach him.             His musical studies have taken him around the world.  He has studied piano with Bonnie Winterton and Gladys Gladstone at the University of Utah; Francios Regnat and Elmer Hereema at Cal State, Northridge (where he was a member of the Northridge Piano Quartet and accompanist for the University Singers); and with Marta Immovilli in Venice, Italy.  He has studied composition with Daniel Kestler at Cal State, Northridge, John Williams at Berklee College of Music, and Scott Lanvatter at the University of Utah.             Rich was a staff member at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, Ca, and at The Warner Bros. Studios, where he worked as a music editor under Dan Carlin.  While at Warner Bros., he worked on such projects as Stephen Spielburg's Tiny Toons, Ghost, and Scenes From A Mall (with Woody Allen and Bette Midler).  He has arranged and produced numerous albums, utilizing everything from full orchestra and choir to solo accoustic guitar.  His production work for concert pianist David Glen Hatch netted a Pearl Award for Hatch in 1998.

    Gowan
  • Born: Glasgow, Scotland BIOGRAPHY Discography Links Photos Lawrence Gowan, born in Glasgow, Scotland, has been playing in and around the Toronto music scene since the early 1970's. He's a classically trained pianist from the Royal Conservatory Of Music and a devout Progressive Rock fan. In 1976 he formed Rhinegold with fellow school mates Daniel Bourne (drums/vocals) and brother Pat Bourke (guitar/keyboards/vocals). Larry fronted this power trio as keyboardist and vocalist amidst his theatric story telling and acrobatics. Larry regularly danced on top of his baby grand piano and pranced about the stage like a wildman on fire. Rhinegold's songs were molded with the same progressive rock substance of Genesis, Supertramp, and Queen - maintaining their melodic sense without abandoning the pretense of good storytelling like other Prog Rock icons like the Moody Blues, ELP and Yes. The Beatles were also a heavy influence and the band often incorporated their songs, as well as those by Genesis and Supertramp, into their set of otherwise all original material.

PLAYING BY HEART - STILL CRAZY
    AFFLICTION - HILARY AND JACKIE
    PLAYING BY HEART
"Talking about love is like dancing about architecture" is the tag line that starts off "Playing By Heart," by writer/director/producer Willard Carroll ("Tom's Midnight Garden") and starring a large ensemble cast in a story about love and lifestyles in contemporary Los Angeles. Robin's Review of 'Playing By Heart' The elder "statesmen" of the players, Gena Rowlands and Sean Connery, are Hannah and Paul, whose longtime marriage is threatened with an unexpected illness and an old infatuation Paul had 25 years ago for a pretty member of the couple's production company. Gillian Anderson ("The X-Files") is Meredith, whose motto is "I can still be wonderful person and NOT have someone in my life." That is, until she meets Trent (Jon Stewart, "The Larry Sanders Show), a persistent swain who is not discouraged by Meredith's negativity about the prospects of love. Then there's loner Hugh (Dennis Quaid, "The Big Easy"), a barfly who tells his sad tale of woe to any woman (or drag queen) who will listen, especially after a lot of drinks. The thing is, every time he tells his story, it's always a different, wildly imaginative yarn.
