Elder Groberg praises 'liberty, justice'
He encourages respect for all Americans By Callie Buys
Deseret News staff writer The phrase "liberty and justice for all" captures the spirit of America, said Elder John H. Groberg of the First Quorum of the Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Elder John H. Groberg of the First Quorum of the Seventy gives the main address Sunday at the Freedom Festival Patriotic Service in Provo.
Johanna Workman, Deseret News Elder Groberg, the main speaker at the annual Freedom Festival Patriotic Service on Sunday, encouraged the approximately 15,000 audience members gathered at the Brigham Young University Marriott Center to respect and value all Americans, regardless of color or culture.
"I love America," he said. "I love what America stands for: 'One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' "
Elder Groberg called the Constitution a "gem of solid principles and wise compromises," specifically praising its diverse founders who acknowledged a creator above mortal man.

By AMY WARD World-renowned pianist David Glen Hatch, recently named LDS Instrumentalist of the Year, will perform a special Christmas benefit concert Friday and Saturday in the Provo Tabernacle. All proceeds of "Christmas with David Glen Hatch" will be donated to "Project Read," an adult literacy program in Utah County. Hatch, a distinguished pianist, arranger, instructor and recording artist, will perform traditional Christmas music as well as some of his arrangements from his three volume CD series, "My Romantic Favorites." Joining Hatch will be the Valley Chamber Orchestra, a group of professional musicians. Marden Pond, musical director of the Nachtmusik Orchestra, will conduct the orchestra during the Christmas numbers. Pond wrote all of the orchestral arrangements for Hatch's Christmas numbers and recently released a recording of his own music, played by members of the Slovak Radio Orchestra.

To m Jans:
"A macho California-based hip country singer"
Henk Dekker
Platenblad

This article draws heavily on previously published articles
and the translation is of the article as printed. "Best known for his collaboration with Mimi Farina, Tom Jans later had a Seventies career as a sort of macho California-based hip country singer. He developed a small cult, which apparently found sustenance in his plaints about the tough life of an All-American stud".
This rather cynical quote is out of The Rolling Stone Record Guide. The following story reveals if there's some truth in it. In 1949 Tom Jans is born the son of a farmer from the San José California area. He grows up in wilderness-like surroundings and as an only child he was raised by two very different people. His father, a very hardworking craftsman, takes his son out working on his land as much as possible. On the other hand his mother was an intellectual who tried to put Tom in contact with all sorts of spirituality and culture . Above all world literature had the highest priority. In the field of music there was also a dilemma: His dad loved country-singer Hank Williams Sr. while his Mom, of Spanish descent, let him hear all kinds of music, Flamenco among them. But the biggest musical influence comes from his Grandmother. She plays trombone and drums (!) in a jazzband and she's the one who inspires Tom to start making music by himself. Under the influence of Beatle-mania in the USA he learns to play piano and guitar at an early age and he also starts reading and writing poems. Through his mother he becomes acquainted with the English poets from the beginning of the 19th century (Lord Byron, Shelley and Keats), so it's not so strange he later gets

While I was working on my musical expressions of sadness and grief, my own father passed away after an extended illness. I found that with half of the Requiem finished, it was time to turn a musical corner. I pulled from my own beliefs in life and death, and found that the sadness had given way to hope and a sure knowledge that both my father and Don had not ceased to exist, but had embarked on a new journey With this understanding, I couldn't write in the standard "requiem" style; minor chords and dark overtones. I found that I had realized a place of light and life, a surety of thought that overcame the darkness of death.

Music for Missionaries "A Musical Companion," "True to the Faith," "Let Us Go Forth" and "Called to Serve Him" are suitable for Sunday listening and sure to inspire missionary zeal. By Laurie Williams Sowby Most LDS missionaries face restrictions on the kind of music they can listen to. The Tabernacle Choir albums are generally acceptable, but here are somerecordings which may pass the muster with mission presidents looking to encourage, build faith, and motivate their missionaries. All are available from LDS book/music outlets or may be ordered from individual web sites. Let Us Go Forth "Let Us Go Forth," the newest, from Sounds of Zion, features some less-familiar and original songs along with familiar favorites such as "The Spirit of God," "Praise to the Man," "I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go," and "Called to Serve" on its 14 tracks. But even the old ones receive new treatments with Greg Hansen's deft arrangements and orchestrations, while able vocalists both men and women bring out the best of the new songs. Dave Tinney's voice is perfect for the haunting rendition of "A Poor Wayfaring Man," and Tammy Simister Robinson's is equal to the task on "When Spirit Speaks to Spirit."

List of famous gay, lesbian or bisexual people
If you'd like to add yourself to a list, see: m:Queer Wikipedians This is a partial list of confirmed and debated famous gay, lesbian or bisexual people lesbigay for short). The historical concept and definition of sexual orientation 20th century . See homosexuality for more about the primary (and by far the most controversial) distinguishing characteristic of GLBs. Some historical figures on this list wouldn't be considered lesbigay by today's standards, but they are included here because they were known to have had same-gender relationships. But even by today's standards, a relationship or two doesn't necessarily mean one is bisexual . Many people who identify as gay or lesbian have had different-gender relationships in their youth, and many who identify as heterosexual have experimented with same-sex relationships. Due to social norms that have remained consistent throughout history , little information about such matters when discussing historical figures is available; therefore, one can only make educated guesses based on limited evidence. It is important to note that the sexual orientation of famous individuals is often fodder for tabloid press. As such, the sexual preference of famous individuals is often subject to rumor simply because of a tabloid article. Some

Popular Music for Orchestra – A Brief History (Part Eleven) by Dick O'Connor Radio informed, entertained, and brought a multifarious human presence into our homes, clubs, and places of business. Sharing the sounds, splendors, and sorrows of civilization it provided us with a passing parade of unifying common experiences and focal points against which we measured our lives. Radio dissolved distance, conquered space, and eliminated, to some extent, regional, social, and economic inequalities, democratizing the fruits of knowledge, culture, and experience, and the products of blessedness and hard work, but also standardizing, consolidating, homogenizing, and, for some, cheapening them as well. With the airplane and the automobile, radio presented us with the prospect of a triumphant technological transcendence of time and the elements, as an agent of change replacing hollow superstitions with concrete conceits. It shaped our opinions and sold us everything under the sun. Radio greatly increased the sense of intimacy between listener and performer. If recordings brought the artist’s work into the home to be enjoyed at will, radio then made the artist himself a regular guest. It was not unusual for people to clean, bake, shower, change clothing, or otherwise prepare for a favorite program. The millions looked to their ‘magic box’ for more than music, news, comedy, and drama. They wanted to get to know, identify with, feel for, and care about others. They wanted to make friends, to feel human warmth. Radio offered the illusion of intimacy without responsibility and complication. What was felt, however, was real enough and went far toward the making of a host of national superstars.

    Electro-Acoustic Music Studios
Composition students have access to two Electro-Acoustic Music Studios (Studio A and B) which use a micro-computer-controlled digital audio and MIDI-based facility to create "tape" compositions. A variety of synthesis techniques are available including FM , Analog, and Sampling. Signal processing (‘outboard' equipment) and both digital and analog recording equipment complete the facility. A third station is used for music notation.
Studio A has been assembled to facilitate MIDI based composition. It uses a computer interface (O'S Studio 3), which allows MIDI control information to flow freely between software programs and external sound modules, synthesizers and effects unit s. Currently, Opcode StudioVision Pro and Max are the primary software programs resident on the computer, controlling synthesizers including the Alesis QS-6 and Roland DX7-II. Once completed, projects can be realized via the Spirit Auto 24-8-2 mixer to various playback media (cassette, DAT).
Studio B is specifically designed for digital audio recording, manipulation and storage. It uses a computer interface (Audiomedia III card), which allows the importation of music/sound from any standard media (cassette tape, DAT, CD). Once residen t on the computer hard disk, the sound can be edited and manipulated using the Protools editing/DSP program, as well as external processing modules. Once completed, projects can be exported, via digital or analog paths, to various playback media (CD-R, c assette, DAT).
