More information Conservatory Calendar, 2003-2004 About the Conservatory In September 1971, seven teachers, working with eighty students, formed the nucleus of The Crestmont Conservatory of Music. Today the Conservatory is housed in a lovely building in San Mateo, where its twenty-five teachers work with an enrollment of over 250 students. Thomas LaRatta, the director, had taught in the Bay Area for many years and saw the need for a central cultural site where deserving musical aspirants might further their growth and development in music at the highest level. The Crestmont Conservatory was formed with this in mind. Today, the Conservatory offers quality training in all aspects of music. This is fulfilled through private lessons combined with related classes offered to students of all ages and interests. The atmosphere of the Conservatory lends more to a uniting of all endeavors of these young musicians: they feel the entire scope of music, which is essential to their musical growth; a feeling that is entirely different from what they could experience in the isolated private studio or the regular classroom. With this kind of exposure, they get a feeling of collective participation and cooperation that in turn furthers and strengthens their sense of values toward community participation, working hand in hand with everyone: harmony among all people. In advancing our goal of developing deserving talent in the community, anyone who wishes admission is enrolled, without regard to race, national origin, gender, or religious beliefs. The Crestmont Conservatory of Music holds these same principles in contracting of our well-trained and well-selected faculty and staff.

This year's Oscars were a much-subdued version of the annual event, minus the red carpet and much of the glitz and glamour. "Chicago" strutted off with the most wins, but Roman Polanski's "The Pianist" pulled off the night's biggest upsets with wins in the Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director categories. Eminem's rap song "Lose Yourself," from his feature film "8 Mile," emerged as the surprise winner for Original Song, marking the first time a rap song has won in that category. Steve Martin had the daunting task of hosting the show in what was one of the toughest years for the Academy Awards. Starting off the show with a joke, "You probably noticed there was no red carpet tonight. That'll send them a message," Martin's carefully worded opening monologue focused more on poking fun at the celebrities in attendance, than on current events.

OAS_AD('Top'); Jesse Lee Children's Home The Jesse Lee Children's Home was established in Unalaska, Alaska (by the Methodist Church) for Aleut orphans in 1890. The orphanage was mostly self sufficient with the children maintaining the school and growing most of their food. The orphanage continued in Unalaska until 1925, when it was moved to Seward, Alaska. The orphanage was again moved (1964), after the Alaska earthquake severely damaged the school. In 1970, the Jesse Lee Children's Home merged with the Lutheran Youth Center and the Anchorage Childrens Christian Home to become ANCHORAGE CHILDRENS SERVICES INC. Several Alaska notables had their starts in the Jesse Lee Children's Home: Benny Benson, who designed our Alaska State Flag Peter Gordon Gould, the founder of Alaska Methodist University (now called APU) Simeon Oliver, pianist, national radio personality and author There is presently a drive to save some of the buildings that originally housed the Jesse Lee Children's Home in Seward, Alaska.
