But comparing two versions of these 36 variations on the song's theme is fraught, given Rzewski's heavily improvisational performance instructions (e.g., to play variation 11 "like fragments of an absent melodyin strict time," variation 27 "Tenderly, and with a hopeful expression"). Hamelin takes the piece more strictly and in more clearly virtuosic terms than Drury, just as he's taken Scriabin and Medtner. He starts off stronger and paces himself differently, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, but always more deliberately. People is a work prone to radically different interpretations, and while it's easy to compare Hamelin and Drury, it's musically better to take each on its own. It's folksy, rootsy music that gets microtonal in fragments and deconstructs the melody so thoroughly that it'll be 36 times lovelier when you're done listening. The added bonus of Hamelin's version is the inclusion of the warm "Down by the Riverside" and "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues," both given the theme-restatement-improvisation processing treatment that marks Rzewski's unparalleled work in traditional folk musics.

: Yes, I do have a Hyperion-catalogue (one "complete" catalogue and a thin one which is a little cross-reference-index of the Howard-Liszt-series) but all the information is also available from www.hyperion-records.co.uk (with some information about the artists of Hyperion like Howard, Hamelin...). I usually order my Hyperion discs from amazon.de (I have just a few discs by Marc-Andre Hamelin. Especially his Alkan recordings are stunning!). I think I will order one or two volumes within the next weeks... (first I have to check out which pieces I already have in my "discography" to chose the right things)

Shostakovich/Shchedrin: Piano Concertos

Orchestra; Andrew Litton
Hyperion The central focus of this disc is neither the composers, who happen to be the most dominant masters of Soviet and Russian music, nor the pianist, a world-class soloist who happens to be Canadian. The leading role is actually played by the piano concerto itself. Innovative and original as ever, Marc-Andre Hamelin portrays the differing facets of this genre through the changing demands of the Soviet regime.
Despite his training as a pianist, Shostakovich’s piano concertos provide considerably lighter fare than the towering edifices of his symphonic and quartet cycles. The two concertos however each made an important impact on the history of Soviet piano music. The first, with its narrative tone and shifting styles closer to music for film or stage than the concert hall, was in fact the first significant piano concerto to emerge from the Soviet Union. The second, however light and designed to fit Soviet demands for uplifting music, is according to David Fanning’s excellent program note “the last piano concerto to gain a place in the standard concert repertoire”. Hamelin and Litton are well matched here and offer some new perspectives on the two concertos showing that these are far more than simple party pieces.
The third concerto of the disc seems mismatched however, exemplifying as it does the official acceptance of twelve-note technique in Soviet music. Here Shchedrin mixes styles running the gamut from Bartok and Prokofiev’s colourful language, to shockingly light restaurant jazz in the final movement. Hamelin rises above the pastiche however and manages to reveal the music behind the channel surfing of the composer.

Grande Sonate 'Les Quatre Ages' op.33
Sonatine op. 61
Barcarolle op. 65 no. 6
Le Festin d'Esope (Study op. 39 no. 12) Selected comparisons:
Grande Sonate: Ronald Smith (1973)
Sonatine: Raymond Lewenthal (1971), Bernard Ringeissen (1976)
Festin d'Esope: Ronald Smith (1977) The extra-musical inspiration for each of the four movements of this piece (headed respectively "20 Years. Very Fast", "30 Years, Quasi Faust", "40 years, a Happy Family. Slow., "50 years, Prometheus Bound. Extremely Slow") lies in a depiction of a man in different stages of development. For a man who wrote this sonata at the age of 35, Alkan had a very pessimistic view of old age, with our 50 year-old man seemingly condemned to a slow torturous living death. At the time of writing he was about to suffer a major disappointment which was to set a course for the composer towards obscurity, isolation and prolonged old age, which makes the sonata seem uncomfortably prophetic. The second movement, first recorded by Lewenthal in his legendary 1965 RCA disc, requires relentless power, stamina and a very clear head. After a satanic start and a Herculean build-up, Alkan embarks upon a fugal section with more parts than a pianist has fingers, if you include octave doublings! Somehow, both Smith and Hamelin find a way to play this passage whose complexity nevertheless leaves the listener somewhat puzzled, before unleashing a triumphal exorcism of all things devilish in preparation for the contentment of family life.

MAURICE WRIGHT : Recordings It's nice to know that contemporary composers can be regular folks. Maurice Wright's Suite for Piano twists and turns and gurgles through an impressionistic journey, and as it turns out, the composer actually intended the work as a set of musical postcards describing a recent trip through the Rocky Mountains. Listen carefully to [Marc-Andre] Hamelin's sparkling performance and you will hear thunderstorms, rushing rivers, the gnashing of truck gears, and even the chugging of beers. The other solo piece [ Sonata No. 2 ] on this recital [CRI CD 660] is less whimsical, but shares the lucid and elegant style. Compared to the almost neo-classical restraint of the solo piano music, the Chamber Symphony is joltingly vigorous. The music just zips along, propelled by a series of upward sprinting motifs. The computer-generated "symphony" seems capable of an infinite variety of sounds, but Wright has shaped his tremendous resources with good taste, and in such a way that the timbral balance makes sense . . . In that respect, this work is a model of restraint . . . The song cycle Night Watch is enlivened by the subtle theatrical sense and wry humor that characterizes much of Wright's music. The pianist's wife, Jody Applebaum, delivers a bright, agile performance.

Although a substantial portion of you are probably considering not reading this review, because I only gave it 3 stars, please do read on, because I would hope that my experiences could help you. Hamelin is certainly an exceptional technician, he dispatces the sonatas with seeming ease, swallowing up the most difficult sections. However Scriabins music is not such that it comes alive by playing the right notes with a strict tempo. Hamelins playing is very conservative, and while this may work for some repetoire, certainly it doesnt work for Scriabin. The playing lacks fantasy and freedom. To bring the music fully alive, and to show the musics full potential the performer must invest a mass of drama and feeling into the music. That is why I would not recommend this set.

Symphony, Canadian to perform
Pianist delighted at chance to play Mozart concerto By Edward Reichel
Deseret Morning News Marc-Andre Hamelin has a tenuous relationship to the Beehive State. "My closest connection to Utah came in 1979 when I met (Gina Bachauer Foundation founder and artistic director) Paul Pollei," he said in a phone interview from Thunder Bay, Ontario, where he was scheduled to play the Shostakovich First Piano Concerto with the Thunder Bay Symphony.
Marc-Andre Hamelin
Malcolm Crowthers All that will change when the Canadian pianist makes what can only be described as his long overdue Utah debut. He will appear with the Utah Symphony next weekend in Mozart's first true masterpiece for piano and orchestra, the "Jeunehomme" Concerto, K. 271. Mozart completed the work in 1777. "This is the first really, really remarkable concerto that Mozart wrote, especially when compared to what he had been writing up to that point," Hamelin said.
He confessed that he finds it difficult to talk objectively about the "Jeunehomme." "I love the ebullience of the work, and I love the darkness of the second movement. It is certainly one of the most interesting and richest works Mozart wrote for the piano."
