Introduction Why Civic Music ? Because great music should be heard, it should be enjoyed through live performance, and it should be shared with others. Contemporary culture offers little nourishment for the human spirit. Fortunately, artists of vast perspicacity and imagination have emerged from history - composers who have refined and mastered a technique of communicating through agglomerations of symbols on paper the grandeur and pathos of human experience. Today, musicians of extraordinary talent and ability are dedicating their careers to the transmission of a rich artistic legacy, and we are invited to savor the fruits of their recreative labor. For fifty years Civic Music has collaborated with such artists to bring that legacy to our doorstep. Of course, organizations like ours are not essential to the perpetuation of great music: Our musical inheritance is safely preserved in recordings. We could choose to fulfill Glenn Gould's prophecy of abandoning the concert hall and recede to a clean corner of digital sound.

Hyperion CDA67320 (2003) By any standard, Marc-Andre´ Hamelin is a phenomenal pianist with recordings of such daunting and diverse composers as Chopin, Liszt, Reger, Busoni, Villa-Lobos, Roslavets, Rsewski and the complete sonata cycles of Medtner and Scriabin. He brings to the keyboard the technical brilliance, historical stylistic nuances, percussive passion, and architectural scope and delicacy, without which any of these would be exercises in bombast. I cannot imagine a better-suited pianist to take on this repertoire of Leo Ornstein, for his piano works demand a similar pianist vocabulary—ranging the gamut from thundering tattoos to impressionistic filigrees. But who is Leo Ornstein, you ask? Let me quote the first paragraph from Martin Anderson's liner notes: Leo Ornstein had one of the most extraordinary lives of any musician. He was a child-prodigy pianist in his native Russia, a refugee from anti-Semitism, an avant-garde American composer and virtuoso pianist of international renown in his early twenties who, at the height of his fame, voluntarily turned his back on the limelight and took sanctuary in increasing obscurity. Having been almost entirely forgotten, he lived long enough (he may have been 109 when he died on 24 February 2002, making him almost certainly the oldest composer ever) to take calm satisfaction in the re-emergence of an interest in his music—of which this CD is early testimony. When, in 1998 the Amercian Record Guide described a then unknown Roger Wright as a "savvy, elegant and charismatic pianist…who will turn heads before long" it might as well have predicted the future. Critics from Washington to Sydney would echo that seniment again. Indeed, the St. Petersburg Times praised Wright as a "profoundly insightful and imaginative artist who impresses for his abundantly rich tone and intellectual savoir faire, but even more so for what really matters: making music with a heart:" Following his debut at the Philips Collection, the Washington Post summed it up this way: " Aristocratic, exhilarating .. he has a powerful technique and he enjoys reveling in it.. - a projection of personality that makes interpretation highly individual but illuminates rather than exploits the music. … a major pianist who should have a big career; a pianist who can unlock the secrets of the great romantic composers." Since then, he has amply fulfilled those forecasts. In one of the more unusual events in music, Mr. Wright found himself at the center of controversy at the prestigious Sydney International Competition in August 2000. Audiences the world over were so enthralled by his live broadcast performances that they flooded the Australian Broadcasting Network with calls and letters to protest his elimination from the contest. His emergence as the unofficial popular favorite compelled the ABC to award him, in a move unprecedented in the 50 year history of the competition, a solo recording contract usually reserved exclusively for the Gold Medal Winner.

    Best SellingClassical CDs
Simply put, 1999 was a great year for classical music. And the year's Grammy Awards in classical categories gave ample proof of an abundance of musical riches. Pierre Boulez and Michael Tilson Thomas were classical music's Santanastwo conductors with multiple nominations. But they also reveal how cutting-edge classical Grammy picks are when compared to Grammy's pop fare. Here are some of the top classical winners, along with our thoughts (and, in some cases, our own choices). Classical Album
      Winner:
"Stravinsky: Firebird; The Rite of Spring; Persephone" Michael Tilson Thomas, cond.; San Francisco Symphony Orchestra CD on Sale here!
The success of this record (it actually won Grammys for Best Classical Engineered Album and Best Orchestral Performance, as well) is a testament to Michael Tilson Thomas's creative programming. He wisely chose to include "Persephone," Stravinsky's seldom-heard retelling of the Greek myth, over more ballet music, making this disc a gem for Stravinsky lovers. A winner of Grammys back in 1975 and 1996, the conductor has star appeal and a love for modern works. For the millennial Grammy Awards, you couldn't ask for a more appropriate winner. Our Pick:
      "Mahler: Symphony No. 1"

Customer Reviews: It Doesn't Matter What You Call It, It's Good! That aside, I found this CD to be entirely delightful, once I got over my expectation that I'd be hearing sonata-allegro or other similar procedures. And I had already had SOME idea what to expect because Marc-Andr© Hamelin had included the Toccatina, Op. 36, on his 'Kaleidoscope' CD (also from Hyperion and highly recommended). What we have here is a masterful compendium of piano jazz styles, everything from barrelhouse, stride and boogie to Bill Evans, Cecil Taylor, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner and Art Tatum, not to speak of the introspectively melodic close-hands technique of George Shearing and Denny Zeitlin. There is no question that Kapustin, who studied with one of the best classical piano teachers in Russia, Aleksandr Goldenweiser, and who has made his living off and on as a touring jazz pianist, has the technique to play (and write) spectacular solo jazz pieces. It is to his credit that he wrote them downalthough I gather getting ahold of published copies of his music is a bit byzantineand that young British pianist Steven Osborne has learned to play them. [One understands that there are bootleg recordings of Kapustin playing but I've never run across any of them.]
