Oktober 2001 Biografie des Gitarristen John Scofield Um 1969 begann Scofield, sich mit Jazz zu befassen. Er spielte mit Gary Burton und Gerry Mulligan. Jazzrock steckte damals noch in den Kinderschuhen. Seine ersten grossen Auftritte kamen jedoch mit der Billy Cobham/George Duke-Band. 1974 spielte John Scofield mit Gerry Mulligan und Chet Baker in der Carnegie Hall (siehe die Live-CD rechts unten). Danach wandte sich Scofield in New York akustischem Jazz mit eigenen Gruppen sowie Musikern wie Dave Liebman und Steve Swallow zu. Mit Swallow war er 2001 bei "jazz in winterthur" zu Gast. Dieser habe ihn als Bassist und Songwriter wie kein anderer beeinflusst, bekennt Scofield. 1982 wurde der Gitarrist ein Teil der Miles Davis Band mit ihrem improvisierten und funkigen Jazz. Gut drei Jahre und einige (auch eigene) Platten später tat Scofield sich mit dem ex-P-Funk Schlagzeuger Dennis Chambers zusammen. Sie verschrieben sich eindeutig den Funk-Rhythmen. Chamber und der Bassist Gary Grainger waren Meister des "James Brown/ Earth Wind and Fire/70's thing", wie Scofield sich ausdrückte. 1989 unterschrieb Scofield einen Plattenvertrieb bei Blue Note Records und machte sich daran, "more <swinging> avenues" zu erforschen. Zusammen mit einem Freund aus den Zeiten an der Berklee School, dem Saxophonisten Joe Lovano, bildete er eine Gruppe, mit der er drei seiner "jazzigsten" Alben aufnahm; daneben existiert aus jener Periode noch eine Bootleg-Aufnahme aus Europa. Zur Gruppe gehörte damals auch der Schlagzeuger Bill Stewart, der beim unten besprochen Konzert in Winterthur mit Scofield dabei war.

Now 75, Taylor plays with a passion and enthusiasm that has thrilled jazz fans for more than half a century. The pianist, composer, author, activist, teacher, lecturer, actor and radio and television personality still finds the energy to play as a solo act or with his trio (which will be with him at UD) three weeks every month. On college campuses, such as UD, his schedule includes master classes and workshops. He's also on the faculty at the University of Massachusetts where he received his doctorate in education and now holds the Wilber D. Barrett Chair of Music. CONTACT Steve Smith's Drum Talk: "Spring 2003 Vital Info Tour Diary" Monday, February 24 Cemal Resit Rey Concert Hall, Istanbul, Turkey The snow continued to fall all night and into the day. I was beginning to think we'd be snowed in and wouldn't be able to leave Istanbul on Tuesday. It was nice to sleep in a little and not have to get up early to travel and the hotel we stayed at was very nice. Tom and I went to the concert hall early to set up our gear. Today I have a Sonor kit that was rented by the promoter and it's in decent condition but more of an "entry level" kit. I put some new heads on the bass drum (I carry an extra set of heads in my cymbal bag) and tuned up the white Remo Ambassador heads that were on the kit and it sounded pretty good. The room that we played in is a beautiful concert hall that has mainly classical concerts. (The local orchestra rehearsed there AFTER our concert!) The stage had a very dry sound and we really needed the monitors to hear each other. We had a very full house of over 500 fans in attendance. It's so different playing a "concert" as opposed to the week we just did at the club, Ronnie Scott's. We still were able to create an intimate feeling even though the room is about 10 times bigger than Ronnie Scott's.

What is for sure, is that I am no modernist – my main influences being jazz pianists like: George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, Monty Alexander and Dudley Moore. I do play for a lot of cocktail parties, and my music seems ideal for that sort of thing, but if you do need something a little more exciting - I can usually accommodate. Home About PAS Convention Publications Join PAS Resources Tony Williams By Rick Mattingly Relaxing in his Knoxville hotel room after his PASIC '83 clinic, Tony Williams reflected on what he hoped he was giving to other drummers. "I would like to be able to give off the same things that inspired me to really love the instrument and love music," he said. "That was one of the things that impressed me when I was a child and saw the people I thought were great. One thing I noticed was that they inspired others. If you can do that, that's a lot." In a life cut tragically short in February 1997 by a fatal heart attack, Tony Williams inspired countless drummers to strive for excellence and find their own voices, as he had done throughout his remarkable career. Born in Chicago in 1945, Williams grew up in Boston and began studying with Alan Dawson at age eleven. "Mr. Dawson went out of his way to encourage me, help me and see that I had opportunities to develop my meager skills," Williams said last year when Dawson was elected to the PAS Hall of Fame. "On Saturday nights he would drive one hundred miles out of his way to pick me up in Roxbury, drive to Cambridge to let me perform with his trio and gain valuable experience, and then return me safely home. I was twelve years old."

The personnel vary to fit the work being undertaken this particular concert was a review of some of their previous work. The leader is Jon Faddis ; his own performance is brilliant in the roles of outstanding jazz soloist, musical director and excellent host and compere. The musicians were as follows: Trumpets. John Faddis, Earl Gardner, Michael Phillip Mossman, Lew Soloff, Tom Williams. Trombones.
