ON EAGLES WINGS BY STEVE HALL
Pianist Steve Hall unveils his passion for melody on his release, ON EAGLE'S WINGS. Hall, along with special guest artists, combines acoustic guitar, harp, strings, percussion and flute into an intensely inspirational sound. Hall's uplifting interpretations of such works as the modern classic "Morning Has Broken," "Amazing Grace" (with a rousing bagpipe section) and "Climb Every Mountain," touch the heart with their freshness and beauty. With the frantic pace of life, sometimes it is good just to be still and uncover the peace that is all around us. ON EAGLE'S WINGS reminds us of that.

Mia and the Steve Klink Trio
in the Philharmonic Hall

The singer Mia, the pianist Steve Klink, the bass player Henning Gailing and the drummer Kruno Levacic achieved something quite extraordinary in the Philharmonic Hall: Thanks to their feeling for the music and a maturely prepared performance they unraveled the mysterious beauty of the songs, called jazz standards.
It has to be said that the attraction of these songs lies in their harmony between melody and rhythm...something Mia is well aware of: with carefully designed musical phrases, sensual glissandos and tremolos she is slipping from the rationality of the language into the magic of pure music. Besides the singer we should mention the original share of arrangements with which Steve Klink added new sonic colours to the standards as well as the inventive performance put up by the drummer and percussionist from Zagreb, Kruno Levacic. He was the man who provided the necessary spontaneity and unpredictability to the concert, without which there is no jazz happening.
An evening in which the trio demonstrated how a singer should be accompanied, how she should be helped and encouraged to be able to develop her expression fully, brought about a few pleasant conclusions: after a long period of time we have a first-rate Slovenian jazz singer. Mia has proven that her decision not to sing any trash hit music was right. She has been perfecting her technical knowledge- her impeccable intonation is helping her a lot at that. She sings what she masters. Her repertoire is becoming richer and more varied, and I dare predict a bolder and impending excursion into the labyrinths of improvisation.

Recorded October 18, 1997
at La Maison de la Culture Frontenac Montreal born Steve Hall is no newcomer to music. After many years playing locally he, in 1977, received a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he studied with Joe Allard, Jaki Byard and George Russell. He won a prize as soloist when the NEC's big band took first place at the Notre Dame Collegiate jazz festival.
An improviser of the highest order with an immediately identifiable sound, Steve has made New York his home base since 1979 and is held in high esteem there by his peers. In New York he gained big band experience with the orchestras of Machito, Byard, Gil Evans and Lionel Hampton. As well this major talent has not gone unnoticed in the small group field and such diverse jazz artists as Art Blakey, Cedar Walton, Wynton Marsalis, Elvin Jones, Woody Shaw and Roy Haynes have availed themselves of his services.
The musicians joining Steve here are his frequent musical partner, pianist Kevin Hays, well known for his work with Sonny Rollins and his own sessions for the Blue Note label, Joe Martin, an unsung bassist who should have a brilliant future and another sometime associate, drummer Lorne Ellen who also spent considerable time in New York. A marvellous empathy between Steve and Kevin can be heard here, particularly in the duets.

(EAR-1046)
After spending several years in Europe and NYC collaborating with various major jazz artists, 1995 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition first-place award-winning bassist Darryl Hall unveils a debut CD of original music. With melodic resonance, "Subtle Touch" displays versatility in solo, duo, trio and quartet settings. Violinist Megumi Okura, Sam Newsome (soprano sax), pianist Jim Ridl and drummer Steve Hass realize Darryl's vision with swing and soul.
"In The Near" / "From The Source" / "Subtle Touch" / "Urban Folk Song" / "Eine Minute" / "Calm On The Prairie" / "One Of Us" / "Tricotism" / "From The Source"
What the critics say:
"The music originates almost exclusively from the pen of Hall and is filled with lyrical beauty...Newsome produces a mellow and sensitive tone on soprano that meshes with Ridl's piano style to yield an alluring mixture of flowing tones. Newsome and Ridl can kick the music into a higher gear, but it never loses its contemplative direction...Hall is agile and inventive in simultaneously expressing freedom and structure.
There is something about the combination of bass and violin that gives music a very appealing sound...Hall guides a stimulating course on this recording while varying the instrumentation in an alluring way. His music has much to offer." -
