Who is the most beautiful person in all of music? It's a ridiculous question, but it does have an answer, probably: Helene Grimaud, a young French pianist. She could easily be taken for an actress or model. What does this matter? Ah, you must not be in marketing. La belle Helene is displayed on her CD covers like a kittenish starlet. You may want to buy her recordings for her face alone. Indeed, Teldec, her current label, has arranged for her latest CD booklet to work as a "mini- poster" (the company's word). They thoughtfully provide instructions. Funny, but no one ever did this for Artur Schnabel. The only real question, of course, is, Can she play? And the answer is yes-adequately. Her latest CD is devoted to Rachmaninoff, starting with the Second Concerto, that great war-horse. Grimaud is a little stilted in it, lacking the Romantic qualities required, including a sense of flow. She is a little dull, actually. The piece seems too sprawling for her, not fitting her hands. In the middle movement, she is unlyrical, jabbing out the melodic line. In the final movement, she is clean and nimble, but without the fire and heart of a more natural Rachmaninoff pianist. This is sort of pixie-ish playing, out of place here.

Great Performers at Lincoln Center Series Jan. 21, 2000. New York - The fall of Soviet Bloc communism and the subsequent drying up of government subsidies stimulated the creation of several new orchestras along the lines of privately sponsored western institutions. Hungary's Budapest Festival Orchestra was founded in 1983 by conductor Ivan Fischer and pianist Zoltan Kocsis. The Moscow-based Russian National Orchestra was created in the former Soviet Union in September 1990 by pianist Mikhail Pletnev, bringing together what promotional literature describes as "the finest musicians in the country" and "many players from the principal ranks of the major Soviet orchestras, most of them soloists in their own right." The need to earn hard currency and to promote their thirteen Deutsche Gramophon recordings means that the RNO has to tour constantly. Their latest American tour covered Ann Arbor, Worcester, Troy, Long Island, and Manhattan between Jan. 19 and Jan. 24. Performing six concerts in as many days is no way to get the best out of weary musicians, as the RNO's lacklustre Jan. 21 concert at Lincoln Centre's Avery Fisher Hall demonstrated.

At once abstract and deeply personal, chamber music has always been the medium through which the great composers have expressed their most urgent feelings and desires. From Beethoven's anguished and exalted "Song of Thanksgiving" (Op. 132) and Smetana's vividly autobiographical string quartet ("From My Life") to the heartfelt outpourings of songs by Dvorak and Debussy, these works are windows on the artist's most private musings - their most intimate voices. The University of Chicago Presents' 2002-03 season is marked by these "intimate voices" from artists worldwide. Whether it be the haunting sound of a solo cello or the seamless beauty of mezzo-soprano Susan Graham on the Chamber Music Series, the season is bursting with song. Once again, the world's most revered musicians grace the stage of Mandel Hall performing music that speaks to us all. As always, we are committed to presenting significant, even daring, debuts, giving Chicagoans their first opportunity to hear some of the musicians that have emerged at the vanguard of music-making worldwide. The intimate circle of composer, performer and listener is only closed when you come to share in the experience. Don't miss a note!

Her latest release, her first on the Teldec label, is a live recording of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 from her debut appearances with the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur, along with two Beethoven sonatas. Ms. Grimaud's award-winning releases on Denon feature works of Rachmaninov, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Ravel and Brahms. Born in Aix-en-Provence, Hélène Grimaud began music studies at the Conservatoire there and later in Marseilles with Pierre Barbizet. At age 13 she was accepted by a unanimous vote into the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. In 1985 she was awarded first prize in Jacques Rouvier's class and was invited to participate in master classes by Gyorgy Sander, Leon Fleisher and Jorge Bolet, who said of her, "It has been a long time, a very long time, since I have met a natural talent of such quality and musical sensibility."

If Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750), supreme arbiter of the Baroque period, had written only one set of variations worth performing, the d minor Chaconne BWV 1004 would be the set. Taken from the second unaccompanied violin Partita, it has been transcribed for virtually every instrument of our time. Unlike a passacaglia, which incessantly repeats a bass line, a chaconne repeats a particular harmony. The stately and grandiose triple meter and the economical formal structure create a work of perpetual magnificence. Only Bach could expound upon the same few harmonies for fifteen minutes, (a theme followed by thirty variations twice ), and transcend banal repetition. The audience will not need to count ceiling tiles during this work. Italian child prodigy Ferruccio Busoni (1866 - 1924), gives Bach's

About 'Pianist'

A pianist is a person who plays the piano
A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists
A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play.
Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music

If you've not yet heard of Helene Grimaud, make a note of the name. In fact, write it in capital letters because this young French pianist, seemingly touched by the little finger of God, is almost certain to have an illustrious career. In decades of listening to, and writing about, music, I have never before come across an account of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy played with such magisterial authority. This is Beethoven in titanic, muscle-flexing mode and Grimaud is clearly the pianist for the job. Her playing exudes authority. Drawing on a seemingly limitless technical armoury and the deepest wells of expressiveness, she informs much of the score with a grandeur that makes for utterly compelling listening.

Sidelined for years, with a market share tumbling from marginal to microscopic, classical music is enjoying a widespread renaissance. The Savoy is just the latest sign. In Britain, sales of classical CDs were up 8 percent last year, against a global downturn of more than 7 percent for all musical genres. Best-selling albums like Hayley Westenra's "Pure," and "Bryn" by opera heavyweight Bryn Terfel, made it onto the pop top-10 lists. The BBC more than tripled its classical-music programming, from 98 hours in 2000 to 368 this year. Even reality TV got a dose of high culture: in France, "Orpheus: Behind the Scenes in the Underworld" filmed 21 music graduates for 12 weeks while they rehearsed Monteverdi's 17th-century masterpiece; Britain's "Operatunity" saw would-be stars compete to sing with the English National Opera. The surge is not just confined to Europe. New concert halls are springing up across Asia—including the glitzy $340 million Esplanade in Singapore. In the United States, the $274 million Frank Gehry- designed Walt Disney concert hall opened in L.A. last October, and earlier this month New York announced plans for a $575 million refurbishment of Lincoln Center—the first phase of an ambitious redevelopment.
