Patti LuPone
photo by Anna Thomson News, views and reviews about the multi-talented women of the musical theatre and the concert/cabaret stage. PATTI LuPONE Were Cole Porter alive to witness Patti LuPone's thrilling performance in last weekend's City Center Encores! production of Can-Can Anything Goes — and that's 17 years too long! . . . Mention should also be made of Reg Rogers, who also scored as the struggling sculptor Boris Adzinidzinadze. And, guess who made his New York stage debut in the ensemble of the Lonny Price-directed musical? None other than Joshua Johnston, son of La LuPone and husband Matt Johnston. . . ELLEN GREENE Ellen Greene had already sung her heart out for nearly an hour when she started to launch into her signature tune, Little Shop of Horrors ' "Suddenly Seymour." As the ever-familiar chords began, Green said to the jam-packed audience at the Public Theater's Joe's Pub, "Sing with me." The enthusiastic crowd responded with a rush of emotion and voice that filled the intimate theatre, gladly giving back to the talented woman who stood before them. It was an extremely moving moment, just one of several high points in Greene's exceptional Valentine's Day concert. As a concert artist, Greene is as good as it gets: She is touching, honest, funny, quirky and, above all, human. There are many great voices out there but few who use them as bravely as Greene. I don't know much about Greene's personal life — and she thankfully seems to have found a great love in her accompanist and musical director Christian Klikovits — but one gets the sense that she has experienced her share of heartache. And that life experience imbues her singing with great emotion and makes for compelling theatre.

http://www.judycarmichael.com/articles.html
A Pianist Who Has Hit Her Stride - Barbara Delatiner, The New York Times At 35 and celebrated as one of the few stride pianists performing these days, Judy Carmichael has never been one to ignore a challenge or dare. She was only 10 years old when, because her grandfather had offered $50 to the first grandchild who could play Scott Joplin’s "Maple leaf Rag," she taught herself the piece note by note and earned the $50. Ms. Carmichael was 19 and a junior in college - she was studying to be- come a German and French translator-interpreter - when a friend dared her to apply for a job playing ragtime piano in a Newport Beach, Calif., restaurant. A Full-Time Career She got the gig, and, then, leaving school for a full-time career in show business, had to learn more than the five tunes she had memorized for recreational playing. Ms. Carmichael was just a few years older when she heard her first stride piano music. She became "passionate" over its hard, demanding rhythm for the left hand and thick, fat chords for the right, and set out to master the style, although as a 110-pound, five-foot, five-inch white woman she would be a distinct minority of one in a field traditionally dominated by hefty black men. "When I produced my first album and took it around to have it released, some companies wouldn’t even listen to it because they couldn’t believe I could play stride," recalled Ms. Carmichael, who lives part time in Sag Harbor and will make her official Long Island debut Saturday at Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater in East Hampton.

NEW BLUES FOR PIANO - A PROJECT IN PROGRESS BY MARCEL WORMS Marcel Worms is a Dutch pianist, classically trained but also with a strong interest in jazz. In 1996 year he asked nine well-known Dutch composers to write him a Blues. He was curious to know what the Blues, one of the roots of jazz music and still in important point of departure and point of reference for many jazzmusicians, meant for the contemporary composer either with a classical background or classically educated. He premiered these Blues in January 1997 in Amsterdam (as well as a Blues written for him by Michael Finnissy) in the BIMHUIS, Amsterdams foremost jazzstage. At the end of 1997 again 12 new Dutch and foreign Blues were ready and were premiered at the Icebreaker, Centre for Contemporary Music in Amsterdam and the third series had its first performance again at the BIMHUIS in November 1998. In 2000 new series of Blues have been premiered at the 'Beurs van Berlage' in Amsterdam and at the BIMHUIS again. Since then many other premieres took place.
Marcel Worms has laid contacts with composers in the countries where he will give or have allready given recitals recently. This has resulted in about 140 new compositions until now originating from over 35 different countries e.g. many European countries, Argentina, Brazil, China, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, South-Africa, South-America, the Ukraine and the USA. The repertory is still growing.

In the '90s, German pianist Georg Grawe seemed to spend as much time in the US as he did in Germany. He cultivated relationships with American musicians (especially those based in Chicago) which have been particularly fruitful. The two recordings listed here make a good case for Grawe's particular brand of "hands across the water" collaboration. The trio featured on Saturn Cycle , with Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger and American percussionist Gerry Hemingway, has released four previous recordings but Saturn Cycle
On Melodie Und Rhythmus Grawe's quartet is comprised of two halves. The front line consists of Grawe and long-time collaborator, reedman Frank Gratkowski. The rhythm section consists of two Chicago stalwarts, bassist Kent Kessler and master percussionist Hamid Drake. While this is by no means a lacklustre effort, the music, once again all improvised, just doesn't have the impact of the best of Grawe's music. The main problem seems to lie in Gratkowski, who plays clarinet on five of the seven tracks. Frankly, I find his playing less than riveting on the instrument. His sound is light, almost effete, and his lines tend to have an aimless quality to them. Kessler and Drake cook with efficient ease and Grawe responds with long, intricate phrases but Gratkowski seems to be going off in a different direction. When he switches to tenor (on 'Passing Scopes' and 'Fringe Factor') the results are a bit more in synch. While it's not unlistenable by any means

BITTERSWEET RAG
The story of ragtime
Missouri's contribution to the Music World Story by Rebecca Baldwin,Photography by Mike Doolin "Joplin always wrote with a touch of melancholy. It's what makes his music so meaningful-so bittersweet." The word bittersweet literally means bitterness and sweetness combined, pleasure mixed with overtones of sadness. Trebor Tichenor, who is an accomplished ragtime pianist and a professor of its history at Washington University in St. Louis used this fitting description of Scott Joplin's music. Professor Tichenor was not the first person to use bittersweet in such a context. Many other people found that one word sufficiently expressed the meaning and feeling of the music written by the King of Ragtime Composers. The haunting, meaningful melodies of this unique music lived on to affect not only the many other succeeding forms of popular music up to rock and roll but also the people who were touched by its bittersweet message. Scott Joplin is the important figure in Missouri ragtime history. Born in Texarkana, Texas, in 1869, Joplin grew up in the musical atmosphere of his musically talented family. A German professor gave him formal piano lessons at no charge when his parents provided him with a piano to practice on. The classical influence from these lessons is evident in the technical difficulty of Joplin's later compositions.
