Long, pretentious play about Glenn Gould
By IAN NATHANSON
Ottawa Sun Legendary Canadian pianist Glenn Gould loved to talk, but the play based on his life has very little action to show for it.
Playwright David Young's Glenn, performed at the Great Canadian Theatre Company last night (it runs until May 15), was structured in 32 short scenes, one for each of the movements in Gould's definitive recording of Bach: The Goldberg Variations (recorded twice, once in 1955 and again in 1981).
But instead of its motion picture namesake, 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould, the play turns into 21/2 long hours about the much-idolized Canadian classical pianist.
Glenn utilizes four stages of Gould's life: The Prodigy as a youth (played by Jefff Lawson), The Performer in his 20s (Linda Prystawska), The Perfectionist at middle age (Keith Jones) and The Puritan (John Koensgen) up until his death in 1982 at age 50.

Concerts CD's Theatre Dance ... Features Glenn (David Young) Effie Crump Theatre Few doors open on a single hinge so it is certainly an oversimplification to suggest, as many do, that the sole reason for Canadian pianist Glenn Gould's decision to stop performing in public was his increasing conviction that many of those who attended his recitals were there primarily to look at him rather than to listen to him. There's a fair case for suggesting a similar motive on the part of many who attend recitals given by pianist David Helfgott (whose life was portrayed in the movie Shine). The great virtue of David Young's play Glenn is that it doesn't focus exclusively on this hangup but comprehensively canvases the full range of Gould's neuroses and oddities (his hypochondria, his horror of being touched by anyone are two of many ) of which his withdrawal from the concert platform was only one. But was turning his back on the recital hall such a silly move? Was this merely childish or eccentric petulance? Or was it a carefully thought out career move to enable him to function more effectively as a pianist.

Wondrous Strange: The Life and Art of Glenn Gould > Customer Review #1: AN ENIGMATIC GENIUS

Born in 1932 in Toronto, Ontario, Glenn Gould is surely one of the most enigmatic and celebrated musicians of our time. According to biographer Kevin Bazzana, its almost as if Goulds gifts were too many for one man to pursue.
Bazzana has spent some two decades studying his elusive subject. Given free rein to explore Goulds papers and granted interviews by any number of the artists friends and colleagues who were once reluctant to speak, the author is able to shed light on many questions that have piqued the interest of Gould fans. We are privy to much of his family history (the original family name was Gold), and the health problems that plagued him. Precocious? Yes, indeed. Readers learn that at the estimable age of 3 his talents were obvious. Perfect pitch was but one of them. As a child he was publicly performing on both piano and organ. His musical education was completed in Canada, and although known throughout Canada he did not make his American debut until 1955. His programs were unorthodox and his behavior on stage often very odd. To say Gould was an iconoclast is an understatement, but such a talented one. He was also an industrious writer, and later in life began conducting.

Glenn Gould was a famous Canadian classical pianist who, by the age of 23, was filling concert halls with audiences eager to hear his interpretations of the works of composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Schoenberg. He received international acclaim performing in Europe, and was the first pianist from North America to perform in the Soviet Union. Gould's interest in music was highly developed at an early age, as is shown by this manuscript, written when he was eight years old.

The following is a transcript of an interview that took place on February 6, 1996. dt: Although I realize the brunt of this conversation will be, for the benefit of our readers, on Canadian pianist Glenn Gould and how he relates to the concept of the interview, I'm really curious about your own ideas on this topic. Where do you see yourself as fitting in? DT: Well, I'd rather begin with what Gould had to say. Maybe as we explore his ideas, I'll pop in every now and then with my own editorial comments. dt: Fair enough. Well, to begin, tell me why you think someone like Gould, a pianist and composer whose work seems to fall pretty far from the subject we're discussing, could have anything to say about interviewing. DT: There was a lot more to Gould than just his musical recordings. The fact that he was quite a prolific writer of essays and stories, and the fact that many of them stretched thematically beyond classical music, shows, I think, that he was as great a writer as he was a pianist. What interests
me especially are his own philosophical writings on the decline of the need for a concert experience and the significance of technology and recorded music.

Customer Reviews Glenn Gould: The Performer in the Work: A Study in Performance Practice This book made me love Gould's music even more. It is no doubt that Glenn Gould is at his best as a pianist, while he is also known as a writer, TV and radio producer, composer, conductor and maybe philosopher. So the author, Kevin Bazzana focuses on Gould as a pianist and his performances in this book. This book is divided into two parts. In the first part, Premisses, Bazzana examines Gould's approach towards music and performance as an artist. An example here is his argument on why Gould published the complete sonatas by Mozart but not those by Haydn despite the known fact that Gould appreciated Haydn's music much more than Mozart's. In the second part, Practices, he analyses Gould's performance in depth. He rationalizes why Gould chose to play a particular piece in a specific manner. For example, Bazzana points out Gould's usage of a peculiar arpeggio, which he calls "bordered" arpeggio, in certain pieces, and explains what effects it gives to the entire piece. I had noticed that Gould often arpeggiates instead of playing a chord as written, but did not realize how it is integrated into the structure of the music. This book enlightened me in many ways and helped me enjoy/appreciate Gould's music even more.

Canadian artists continue to interpret our greatest interpreter IT'S EIGHTEEN YEARS AND COUNTING SINCE GLENN GOULD DIED, AT THE AGE OF FIFTY, FROM A STROKE THAT HALTED FOREVER THE PROCESSES OF ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE of Canadian minds. There are those who say that he is overrated on some counts that he made some bad Beethoven recordings, and so on. But no one listening to his Bach recordings could disagree that Gould had a most unusually acute ability to comprehend and interpret musical structures with a rare brilliance and clarity. His was a mind and a life that, coming when they did in Canadian history, expanded the possibilities for the arts in Canada. They have also intrigued and inspired others, both directly and indirectly, since the time of his early, shatteringly brilliant, recordings. Artists in a variety of disciplines have tried to get to the bottom of his particular talent. How did this Toronto boy turn out to be the one-of-a-kind genius the word is not too strong whose recordings were chosen by NASA to be sent into space to demonstrate the calibre of human sophistication to alien life forms?
