Gould is best known as a concert pianist who renounced concertizing, as a puritanical purveyor of Bach who could not help humming along on his recordings, as a thinking man's musician. What is less well known is that Gould was also a profound and original thinker No one who has listened to Gould's recordings can deny that they are highly individual, even idiosyncratic. Yet does that make him necessarily an individualist? Of course not. Even his decision to stop giving concerts in favor of making recordings, while unprecedented, does not indicate his reasons for doing so. It is here that his writings are decisive, because Gould had good reasons for doing what he did and he set them out clearly in his many essays (collected by Tim Page into The Glenn Gould Reader On the night that Glenn Gould gave his final public concert (March 28, 1964 at Orchestra Hall in Chicago), neither the audience nor the performer knew that it was to be his last. The program was typical Gould and, as always, consisted of works he personally enjoyed playing (this time some fugues from Bach's Art of Fugue, a Bach partita, a late sonata by Beethoven, and the third sonata of Ernst Krenek). But if Gould had the independence of mind to play only what he liked and the professional status to get away with it, why did he renounce the stage? One way to explain it is by saying that Gould was not primarily a pianist, but a musician. At the Conservatory, instead of listening to our teachers, we all wanted to play Chopin like Pollini, Rachmaninov like Horowitz and, of course, Bach like Gould. What a mistake that was! His tempos, either very fast or extremely slow, were just impossible to follow. His feeling for the non legato phrase was so precise that only he could master all its different aspects, from portato to staccato quasi pizzicato Clearly, Gould was a man of counterpoint rather than harmony. His love for horizontality came from his playing the organ as a child. He was never attracted to verticality. His landmarks were the flatness of Lake Simcoe covered with ice and Hiroshi Teshigano’s movie "The Sand Woman." In music, it was Gibbons, Bach, Handel, Haydn, the modern Vienna school and Hindemith. He did, however, sometimes make an exception for Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninov. And when he approached a classical composer, it was mainly through a baroque prism. But often it takes a spark of madness to kindle the fires of genius, especially in the arts. Gould left a fabulous legacy of brilliant and fascinating recordings. Just how weird was he? Consider this: He was a world-class hypochondriac. He feared drafts and cold, wearing heavy sweaters, scarves, gloves and overcoats even in the hottest weather. He was terrified of germs, refusing to go to a hospital to visit his dying mother. He was frightened by physical contact, canceling a dozen concerts and suing after a piano-tuner jostled him. He gobbled vast amounts of pills in lieu of food. He crouched below the keyboard, sitting 14 inches off the floor on a chair his father had built and which he insisted on using his entire life. He refused to have it reupholstered, and so after the original padding wore away it became a medieval torture device, with only a single narrow beam running down the middle of the seat from front to back, forcing his entire body weight onto his groin. When he played he seemed utterly oblivious to his surroundings, swaying soulfully and waving a free hand as if conducting himself, his mouth and face contorted in constant expressive motion. His mother (and first teacher) was a vocal coach who had him sing notes as he played them, a habit he never lost and which remains all too apparent throughout his records. Nevertheless, rather than playing the standard fare of Beethoven or Brahms, on January 2, 1955, the 22-year-old Gould played a complete performance of the Goldbergs at a concert in Washington, DC, so launching his celebrated career. A year later, Columbia Masterworks released Gould's debut recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. In 1981, Gould recorded them again in a radically different interpretation before his death by a stroke in 1982. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Gould's birth, Sony Classical has remastered and released both recordings along with critic Tim Page's 1982 interview with Gould. [Gould] sort of brought Bach outdoors... He suddenly made it clear all the real glories and beauties of Bach. He was not being at all pedantic; he was just taking this beautiful music and running wild with it.
