Ralf Gothoni
Pianist
Biography

Born in Finland, Ralf Gothoni’s musical studies began at the early age of three when he started studying the violin. When only five, he changed to studying the piano. At the age of 15 he made his debut as soloist at the Jyväskylä Summer Festival and in 1994, he was awarded the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award, which is considered to be one of the biggest awards in the classical music world. Over the years Ralf Gothoni’s reputation has grown not only as a pianist, but also as an accomplished conductor. He has performed all over the world and has been heard many times in America, Europe, and parts of Asia (Japan, China). In most instances, he appeared as pianist, but often as pianist/conductor. He has performed under famous maestros such as Paavo Berglund, Sir Colin Davis, Adam Fischer, Mariss Janssons, Neeme Järvi, Osmo Vänskä, and many others. In the year 2000, he was named principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra; and in 2002 he was appointed music director of the Northwest Chamber Orchestra in Seattle. Mr. Gothoni’s rendition of Haydn and Mozart concerti, which he conducts from the piano, are of course well known. His concerto repertory is immense; however, his favorite concerti include Benjamin Britten’s Piano Concerto, Beethoven’s No. 3 and Lizst’s No. 1. He also loves to perform violin and cello recitals in addition to playing piano quintets or quartets.

Gothóni has gained a reputation for his unconventional way of music making, not only as a pianist, but as a musician with innovative thinking about music and the wholeness of musicianship. His performances include appearances at prestigious music festivals – Salzburg, Berlin, Prague, Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, La Roque de Antheron, Ravina, Tanglewood and more. He has appeared as soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony, the Japan Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Chicago, Detroit and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, among others. He performs in numerous concerts as both soloist and conductor, conducting from the keyboard. Northwest Chamber Orchestra presents "Showcase," a chamber concert in Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, Sunday afternoon. In fine voice, with his excellent German diction, a trimmed-down Poll proved that substantial weight loss does not imply vocal loss; he sounds better than ever. The Strauss set ("Heimliche Aufforderung," the nostalgic "Allerseelen" and the impassioned "Zueignung") was particularly fine, with both performers clearly involved in those lovely scores. MUSIC REVIEW NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA WHEN: Friday night WHERE: Nordstrom Recital Hall The orchestra's tone is richer and has more depth, and ensemble work is now impeccable. Friday night under Gothoni, the violas had a notable presence to their sound, while the cellos were outstanding, playing as one warm and eloquent instrument. It was an unusual program. Two works took a look at Baroque forms with a more modern twist: Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite III, and Grieg's Holberg Suite, No. 3. Gothoni directed and performed Philip Glass' "Tirol" Concerto for piano and string orchestra, and his wife, Elina Vahala, was soloist in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 (the "Turkish").

http://www.lipsanengroup.com/gallery/collector.html
Collecting is saving objects from ravages of time and oblivion.
Collecting is a way to pass on information and knowledge. Juhani Lipsanen's first objects of collecting were antique weapons and peasant utensils. It was the ability of craftsmen to bring esthetics into everyday life and to create objects that were both functional and beautiful in a timeless way that intrigued the young man. Guns and swords, tools of destruction, removed from their violent purpose of being spoke of different cultures and of the strangeness of human beings to include a sliver of esthetics not only to living but to dying as well. The stark beauty of peasant handicrafts evoked the presence of personal history - in the grooves and indentations the thumbprints of the makers and the users of the everyday objects could be felt. It was then when one of the main reasons for collecting crystallized in Juhani Lipsanen's mind: collecting was a way to remember and preserve. Collecting enables one to stand in the intersection of the international, the national and the personal. Collecting art is a thought process, a way to learn from life by assembling and reassembling esthetic objects, an avenue to striking visions and endless questions.

Josephine Knight Josephine Knight is at the forefront of a new generation of virtuoso cellists. Having studied with Aldo Parisot at Yale University and the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, Josephine returned to the U.K. to launch her career with a highly acclaimed debut recital at the Wigmore Hall, London. At the age of 9, Josephine won a specialist music place at Wells Cathedral School. She then won an Associated Board Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music where, under David Strange, she won all the major cello prizes and holds the Dip-RAM. In 1993 Josephine was unanimously awarded First Prize in the John Tunnell Trust Competition in London. The following year she was one of only nine cellist to be selected for Mischa Maisky's course in Sienna Italy, where she obtained a diploma from the "Accademia Musicale Chigiania" and in the same year was the only string player to be chosen to perform in the Portobello Concert Series which features "Britain's most talented young musicians". Last November Josephine made her solo debut at the Barbican Centre with the English Chamber Orchestra after which Martin Anderson from 'The Independant' wrote 'marvelously played here by Josephine Knight'.

ELINA VÄHÄLÄ, violinist
"The Finnish violinist Elina Vähälä gave a decisive and spirited debut. A thoughtful musician, she has all the technical accomplishment and confidence she needs to project her thoughts. Her intonation is sure and her tone fine, going all the way from a grainy, almost reedy insistence, but perfectly formed, to soft dabs of sounds. This range of color was especially useful in the Debussy Sonata - she made musical poetry with a nice robust edge to it. In her performance of the Brahms Sonata in D Minor, her delicacy of sound and rhythm in the third movement was marvelous. In the highly musical reading of this work, she breathed each movement, and even the whole sonata, as one."
- THE NEW YORK TIMES
"Elina Vähälä is a very good violinist with a solid technique and a pure, focused tone. Her reading of the Debussy Sonata was flexible and colorful. In the Brahms Sonata, she produced a lovely, warm, sustained tone in the slow movement, and the third movement was very driven and virtuosic. She really came into her own with a very striking, convincing performance of Preludes from Op. 34 by Shostakovich, arranged by Tsyganov. Vähälä's strong affinity for the music gave her tone resonance and variety and her playing had spontaneity, fire and expressiveness."
