Interview with Ruth Schneidewind
Back to top The primary objectives of the project are: - To introduce chamber music as a platform for social interaction and personal growth
- To bring the joys of music making to as wide an audience as possible, and to encourage the formation of chamber groups. Learners are introduced to music of different styles, from classical, jazz and contemporary "classical" to traditional African and popular music - all these encompassing the standard and not-so-standard repertoire of a string quartet. Learners will also see that this music is appreciated and performed by a young and vibrant group of musicians.
An important adjunct to the performance itself and a key to the initiative is the collection of data relating to the state of music education and awareness in schools countrywide.

Thanks to the reproducing technology of the Disklavier, the Piano-e-Competition was unlike any competition that had gone before: one of the seven judges, acclaimed pianist Yefim Bronfman, was on another continent when it took place. During the finals, artists performed on the Disklavier in Minnesota. The performances were captured digitally as computer data and sent via the Internet to Bronfman's identical Disklavier in Hamamatsu, Japan where the note for note performances were recreated and synchronized with high quality video of the performances.

The Gilmore embraces a variety of instruments, from the reticent clavichord to the gregarious electronic keyboard, as well as a variety of musical styles, from antiquarian to jazz and pop. It presents young artist awards every few years. But the heart of the matter is the Gilmore Artist Award, a $300,000 windfall conferred at longer intervals — now, every four years — on a performer who, ideally, doesn't even know he is being considered. http://mapage.noos.fr/piaseg/hannele/hannele.html
Hannele Segerstam welcome to my home page Let's start with favorite composers: Beethoven - Mahler - A. Berg. For me that is a straight line of musical development, drama and individuality. Other composers close to my heart are Schubert, Schumann, Janaceck and Messiaen. As I have been able to do a lot of solistic work (more of that later on) I would like to mention that I love most to play the Alban Berg concerto. I feel strongly for drama in music (and for the musical drama for that matter) and in this respect the Berg-work is unsurpassed, the solo violin acting as primus motor! It may be of no surprise that Wozzeck and Lulu are among my favorite operas. (I just saw the brilliant Glyndenbourg Lulu - production of 1996 on video!) So I love opera too. Janaceck's operas are just great! Of performers the idols are David Oistrach and Sjatoslav Richter, of the younger ones I admire Yo-Yo Ma, Olli Mustonen and Ralf Gothoni among others. About literature: important for me just now is Milan Kundera and A. Camus always. My favorite filosofical essay 'The Myth of Sisyphus' by Camus published 1942 is a year older than myself, so you can see me being that old that I have had time to learn to love a lot of things (among them also good Bordeaux wines and why not a Vega-Sicilia among other sensual pleasures....)
