That's more than a gilt-edged invitation, it's an outright plea to critics to be snotty, to have some malicious fun at his expense. There's no way he could have been oblivious to the danger; he knows he's daring us to knock the chip off his shoulder. It isn't completely clear why an enterprise of this sort invites that kind of sneering, but it does, frequently and almost irresistibly. Perhaps because the history of popular musicians trying their hand at classical composition is a melancholy one.
