Billy Joel's Classical Crossover
Is it a bold adventure or a grand delusion?

Credit where credit's due: It took guts for Billy Joel to title this recording of his first classical piano compositions . That's more than a gilt-edged invitation, it's an outright plea to critics to be snotty, to have some malicious fun at his expense. There's no way he could have been oblivious to the danger; he knows he's daring us to knock the chip off his shoulder. It isn't completely clear why an enterprise of this sort invites that kind of sneering, but it does, frequently and almost irresistibly. Perhaps because the history of popular musicians trying their hand at classical composition is a melancholy one. (Musicians who are primarily performers rather than composers have managed the transition more smoothly; Neil Sedaka played a creditable Chopin back in the early '60s, and

Written for 4 part male chorus. This version is being performed by Noel Cragg singing every part on multiple tracks.
Instrumental American Piano Concerto excerpts (5 Mb) my concerto is still a promising but unfinished fragment.
Peabody Symphony, Yuliya Gorenman , piano Revelation -for organ - The rich and intense middle section of a larger set of variations based on Sweelinck's ancient dance theme.
George E. Becker
, Visscher organ at Old First Presbyterian, San Francisco Revelation -for orchestra (5 Mb) - The above piece recast for orchestra.
Kenneth Matthews conducting the Old First Orchestra, premiered March 4th, 2001 Paranoic Rhapsody a Sublimation of Liszt (2 Mb) - for solo 'cello. A reworking of my earliest written piece, 19th century gypsy romanticism is taken over by electronic-like sounds and the harmony and rhythms of the current world.
Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick
, 'cello (playing the earlier version) Apparition of B-A-C-H in a Cubist Piano Piece (1.5 Mb) - my personal answer to serialisms' defiance and denial of tonal gravity. In the extract you will hear the pianist stepping on, cutting off and crushing the opening of an a-tonal fugue. The piece somehow compresses all the emotions and events of 4 months of my life into 4 minutes.

Opera "LA BOHÈME." This Puccini favorite was more ubiquitous than usual last season, but even if you've seen it recently at City Opera or the Met or on Broadway, it's safe to say the production was nothing like this. The Amato Opera performs in a minuscule theater downtown. The sets are homely and the singers are young, but their voices most certainly fill the house, such as it is, and there is an intimacy you will never find in a larger venue no matter how much you spend on tickets. Tomorrow night at 7:30 and Sunday at 2:30 p.m., 319 Bowery, at Second Street, East Village, (212) 228-8200. Tickets: $30, $25 for students, 65+ and children under 12 (Jeremy Eichler). "CARMEN." With a graceful stage presence and a soft-edged velvety voice, the Israeli mezzo-soprano Hadar Halevi is quite alluring as Bizet's sultry cigarette girl whose love cannot be domesticated. Her Don José, Michael Hendrick, was a bit wooden on opening night, but he sang with sufficient ardor, and he well may relax into the role. Jonathon Eaton's handsome 1992 production, which presents all the requisite exotifications of Spain in deep dark colors, has worn well. Tomorrow night at 8, New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, (212) 870-5570. Tickets: $30 to $110 (Eichler).

CLASSICAL GAS On Monday, October 13 (Columbus Day observed), Nation Public Radio (NPR)'s "Performance Today" will broadcast the debut performance of "Reverie," a classical piano composition by Columbia Records artist Billy Joel. "Reverie" was performed by the award-winning Russian-born classical pianist Yuliya Gorenman and recorded live in concert last week in the Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, Massachusetts. Monday's broadcast will be the general public's first opportunity to hear one of Billy Joel's classical pieces. "I've just found myself getting to a point where I want to say more with the music," Billy told "Performance Today" host Martin Goldsmith. "I've become a better musician as I've gotten older. I've become a better writer as I've gotten older, hopefully. I have to expand on that." For "Performance Today" local broadcast times, please contact your local NPR member station.
