Music At Penn Alps Slated To Present Twelfth Concert Series
    May 20, 2004
Music at Penn Alps will present 12 concerts during its 12th season through the summer months to the tri-state area. Featuring primarily classical ensembles, the 2004 series also includes a solo piano performance, a concert of Appalachian and Celtic folk music, and an evening of cornet music from the Victorian era. On Sept. 11, a special benefit concert has been added for the Alta E. Schrock Memorial Fund.
Concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evenings, beginning May 29 and ending Aug. 28, in the Great Hall adjacent to Penn Alps Restaurant and Craft Shop in Grantsville.
The season opens May 29 during the Memorial Day weekend with two leading musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, associate principal oboist James Gorton and principal harpist Gretchen Van Hoesen. The husband and wife duo frequently performs in the Pittsburgh area and beyond. Gorton was previously principal oboist with the Rochester Chamber Orchestra, Pittsburgh Opera, and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Van Hoesen has been principal harp for the New York Lyric Opera, the New York City Ballet and numerous other orchestras. June's concerts begin on the 5th with the Laurel Trio. Pianist Joan DeVee Dixon of Frostburg State University joins Scott Pappal, horn, and Jennifer Pappal, violin, of Altoona, Pa.

It has been something of a perennial joke over the last decade or so, as more and more people have discovered the Russian-American Jewish composer Leo Ornstein, noted his birthdate of 1892 or '93, and concluded that he must be dead but when did he die? The answer, incredible to report, was that until February 24, 2002, he was still alive, which makes him probably the longest-lived musician in recorded history.
Not even mentioned in William Austin's until-recently definitive Music in the 20th Century , Ornstein enjoyed a vogue from about 1913 to 1925, the year of his magnum opus, the Piano Concerto. He then pretty much disappeared from the public eye, teaching in Philadelphia until his retirement in 1953, though composing (mostly piano music) well into his nineties.
Writer Carl Van Vechten was one of his early champions, critic Olin Downes raved about the Concerto, and Ornstein's piano performances introduced U.S. audiences to major works of Ravel, Busoni, Scriabin, and Schoenberg. Yet only recently has his music been receiving the attention it deserves.
Stylistically it has always perplexed, because of its eclectic, yet organic, combination of impressionistic textures, extended chromaticism, modal exoticism, and energizing tone clusters, often all in the same piece.

[minus optionally cuttable passages: 289 = 704] May 20, 1997 Seventy is a good number. That's how many people there were in the old Sanhedrin, which made legislative decisions for the Jewish people in Biblical times. And it's the approximate number of people that attended each of four concerts in Manhattan this month, each one featuring contemporary works by Jewish - especially Jewish women - composers. [The two events organized by women in small halls were completely filled; the others, in larger halls, less so.] For the first time in recent memory, the American Society for Jewish Music presented a concert of music written entirely by composers who were not present: Baritone Robert Abelson honored the centennial of Lazar Weiner's birth with five of his 115 Yiddish art songs. Mimi SternWolfe accompanied him, and also performed with Marshall Coid and Dan Barnett in the evocative, nigunesque-mit-freylakh piano trio "Eicha" by Maxine Warshauer, currently resident in South Carolina. Two movements from the Klezmer Clarinet Quintet by the young Argentine-Israeli Osvaldo Golijov, now living in Newton, Mass., were most impressive. Two a cappella quartets by the late Miriam Gideon (who was also memorialized in the reading of an interview conducted with her by Linda Ardito) were less so. [The Jewish Theological Seminar will honor Gideon in a concert devoted entirely to her works June 4.]

This dynamic young artist has toured major cities around the world, and her performances have been broadcast world-wide. Among her collection of prizes, Angela Jia Kim was honored with the award for Best Interpretation of French Music by the French Piano Institute in Paris, which led to performances of the music of Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc at Salle Cortot in Paris and at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. She has also been recognized for her interpretations of Mozart by winning the grand prize at the Mozart Festival Competition in Illinois. New for the page "Yesterday's Concert Pianists" Early in September a biography page for Dame Myra Hess was published at the Carolina Classical Collection , edited by Charley Moss. This is an excellent, concise article about this famous lady and she forms the inspiration for this month's Editorial Musings. Nigel Nettheim has expanded his offerings about Maryla Jonas into an index listing several rare articles about her life. This past month two readers (see Letters to the Editor ) introduced me to two great pianists from the past who have been neglected: Etelka Freund (b. Hungary, 1879; d. Zurich, May 27, 1977) and Lubka Kolessa (b. Lvov, Ukraine, May 19,1904; d. Toronto, Canada, 1997).
