Leopold Godowsky
Leopold Godowsky February 13 November 21 ) was a pianist, composer, and teacher. He has been described as the "Pianist of Pianists". Godowsky was born in Soshly, near Vilnius , in what is now Lithuania , after a tour of North America, he returned to Europe, intending to study with Franz Liszt in Weimar . Upon learning of Liszt's death shortly after his return, he traveled instead to Paris , where he was befriended by the composer and pianist Camille Saint-Saëns , who enabled him to make the acquaintance of many leading French musicians. Saint-Saëns even proposed to adopt Godowsky if he would take his surname, an offer which Godowsky declined, much to the older man's displeasure. Godowsky's pedagogical activity began in

Works by Leopold Godowsky Johann Strauss
Caprice CAP 21571
. Duration: 74:36
There are today in Sweden a number of excellent, creative and imaginative, technically skilled pianists. We can for example mention Mats Widlund Stefan Lindgren Bengt Forsberg Kristine Scholz Mats Persson Lundin Leopold Godowsky
When I hear the name Leopold Godowsky my thoughts immediately move on to and his recordings on Hyperion of Godowsky Godowsky Chopin Godowsky wrote for the left hand alone.
Lundin has no reason, however, to fear venturing into Godowsky Caprice CAP 21608 , with piano concerts by and Johan Hammerth Petja Svensson [cello] and another one with Cecilia Zilliacus [violin].
Here starts off with Leopold Godowsky Sonata in E-minor Grand Sonata Mozart and Beethoven , and the sonatas of Schubert and Schumann
, as the fine artist he is, firmly understands what I mean by this reflection. Clearly Leopold Godowsky offers among the finest pianism of his day.
Emil von Sauer
The fifth and last movement is the second longest with its in excess of seven-teen minutes. The movement has a Dies irae in the tempo indication, and consequently it is a serious event, almost like a Marcia funebre. The long list of indications for this concluding music of the sonata also harbors a Lento mesto and a Larghetto lamentoso, so the serenity of emotion is in place throughout, concluding the great sonata in thoughtfulness and reflection. This is masterly composed music, in the last movement reaching out to modern times in a sort of timeless statement, touching us today equally as naked and direct as it must have done at the time of composition.

Waiting for Godowsky
Published: Tuesday, October 14, 2003 The Polish Philharmonic Resovia makes its American debut tour this month, showcasing a soloist with a University of Maryland connection and music of great Polish composers.
Pianist Leopold Godowsky III will perform with the 49-member chamber orchestra in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center's Dekelboum Concert Hall. Heir to two great musical traditions, he is the nephew of George Gershwin and grandson of the legendary pianist/composer Leopold Godowsky. He will perform in the hall right next door to the International Piano Archives at Maryland (IPAM), which houses a collection of musical scores, recordings and correspondence related to his grandfather.
In fact, Godowsky III donated many important materials to the collection himself. Among the more significant materials in the collection are some rare test pressings of recordings Godowsky made, which were not released and therefore stand as unique representations of his playing.
Godowsky III, widely praised for his beautiful tone and his touching and powerful interpretations, will perform Chopin's Piano Concerto in F minor with the ensemble. Also a composer and teacher, he is currently a member of the faculty at Hartt College of Music. Donald Manildi

The liner note in his first CD, " STUDIES ON CHOPIN'S ETUDES "
M ICHAEL NANASAKOV was born in 1955 in Vilns(Lithuania) . Godowsky was also from the same district .However, Vilns(Lithuania) at that time was the part of Poland, and was under the rule of USSR. Playing the piano was not Nanasakov's speciality when he was a boy. He began to study playing the piano at the age of 12 under Professor AROISIO, famous Father, composer who played the Organ. At this time, Musical Logic and Improvisations were Nanasakov's speciality. After a while, he was interested in PIANO, a musical instrument itself, and became a piano tuner. He acquired all the mechanism of this musical instrument to the minutest details, and his performances amazed many people. (There were no piano tuners in this area except him, though.) He obtained political asylum in the United States in 1989. Nanasakov says that he likes to be called a MUSICIAN rather than a PIANIST. "A pianist has to express oneself by playing the piano, which is a musical instrument. However many specialists organize a symphony orchestra, the different point of view, and I could say it is a conductor's music!" Nanasakov does not have any concert now,but only makes CD public. That is his style.

Leopold GODOWSKY Studies on Chopin's Etudes (complete)
Marc-Andre Hamelin (piano)
HYPERION CDA67411/2 (2 CDs) [153' 02"] In order to fully appreciate what Godowsky has done it is important to know the Chopin originals (some of the greatest piano music). However, even if you are not familiar with Chopin's inspired creations as he wrote them, Godowsky's commentaries on them retain (to a greater or lesser extent) Chopin's melodies - each can be appreciated on purely musical terms as a Chopin/Godowsky collaboration. And there are some real gems here to complement what Chopin left us. That this is so is due to Hamelin. Whatever difficulties the pianist faces (and they are considerable), Hamelin has overcome them and is able to play each of Godowsky's Studies as a musical entity. It says much for Chopin's genius - and Godowsky's imagination - that it was possible, for example, for Godowsky to write seven Studies based on Chopin's Op.10/5. Each has a different character but Chopin's original is omnipresent: it's like viewing the same object from various angles and seeing a different (but related) perspective. Hyperion's booklet is a model of how to present music that isn't heavily represented in the catalogue or, in this case, only known to piano cognoscenti. Godowsky's own introduction is included along with an essay by Jeremy Nicholas (an author on Godowsky) and comments by Hamelin himself. Add the top-notch production values of Andrew Keener and superb Tony Faulkner sound and this release cannot be faulted. I did wonder though if Hyperion has missed a trick by not adding a third CD and asking Hamelin to record Chopin's 27 Etudes as well - a complete package.

All are in duple/quadruple time as is all Javanese music (just as Godowsky's "Triakontameron" and "Walzermasken" are in triple time.) The sonority of the first piece "Gamelan" pervades the whole Suite. Godowsky had certainly heard the Gamelan orchestra in the Paris Grande Exposition Universelle (1889) but had experienced it the year before, visiting Java as an impressionable youth of nineteen. http://www.miamipianofest.com/press/bruno_libetta.htm
In February 2000, attending the Miami International Piano Festival, dedicated to young pianists just making a name for themselves, I had the opportunity to make a truly breathtaking discovery.
The last recital in this festival was given by a 28-year-old Italian pianist who was merely a name to me: Francesco Libetta. His programm intrigued me because it featured, alongside various pieces by Liszt, Ravel and Saint-Sans, a series of six etudes by Chopin arranged by Leopold Godowsky.
These etudes were seen by all the pianists I knew as literally unplayable, and that is why they are never included in concert programes. Chopin's 24 Etudes are already notorious for their extreme technical difficulty, but the great eady-20th-century Polish pianist Leopold Godowsky had embarked on a sort of "mission impossible" and prepared a multiple arrangement (running to a total of 53 etudes), vastly multiplying the difficulties of the original, and making them into a kind of textbook of physical impossibility.
Libetta's Miami programm, oriented toward hyper-virtuosity, was not made of musical pieces I am usually attracted to, but with the Chopin/Godowsky etudes we were entering new territory, the domain of meta-virtuosity, and I was curious to hear these "impossible" pieces for the first time.

FEW CAN PLAY HIS WORKS
Par 1 According to Vladimir de Pachmann, the pianist, whose playing of Chopin has won enviable fame for him, the transcriptions made by Leopold Godowsky are not to be taken lightly. They constitute, in his opinion, some of the most important works in the literature of the pianoforte. Par 2 "I only have learned a few of Godowsky's transcriptions of Chopin." said de Pachmann last weeek to a Times reporter, "but I have played over by myself all of Godowsky's works in this direction and I can scarcely tell how great I believe it to be. His original work may not be so fine, but his transcriptions are wonderful and very difficult. Who can play them? Only a few. They demand a special technique of their own. Godowsky himself perhaps does not bring to them all the supreme qualities they need. Par 3 Par 4 Par 5 "Touring fatigues me," he said, "and that voyage was dreadful. Then when the reporters met me at the dock and asked me if I liked America I told them 'No.' That morning I did not like anything. They printed all I said about America and musical critics and what not, and, of course, I didn't mean it at all. I was sick and cross.
