It was 35 years ago, on June 28, 1960, that a tall, lanky, youthful Texan gave a singular piano performance in Baku's Philharmonia. Two years earlier, he had caused a sensation both in the USSR and the U.S. by winning the coveted First Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. To this day, Van Cliburn's concert in Baku is remembered as one of the most extraordinary foreign performances ever given in Azerbaijan. Those who were fortunate enough to gain admittance (approximately 1,500 people) still remember it vividly. This past June, Nina Fischeva, Director of the Photo and Cinema Materials at Azerbaijan's National State Archives, along with Fuad Akhundov, author of our series, "Legacy of the Oil Barons", prepared an album of Van Cliburn's visit to Baku from photos they found buried in the archive's files. Cliburn's birthday was coming up on July 12th; he would be 61. Would it be possible to find him and pass on a little album as a gesture of the admiration that Azerbaijanis still hold for him? Nina had attended Van Cliburn's concert; Fuad had not yet been born although his mother had been one of the lucky few who managed to find a ticket.

Lugansky will make his Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4 this weekend. Modest and easy-going over the phone from his home in Moscow, the pianist says there was never a turning point when he knew music would be his life. "I became a concert pianist before I thought about it," says Lugansky. "When you study in (Moscow's) Central Music School and you're 7 years old, you've already played in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, one of the best halls of Russia. If you are good, you play more and more in other cities. Then, you play abroad. ... So it starts before a young man thinks what he wants to be. It became my life." Whether or not he plays in the style of legendary Russian pianists like Emil Gilels or Sviatoslav Richter - the latter one of his idols - is a moot point. This connection to their homeland was not lost on Soviet musicians behind the Iron Curtain. Pianists Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels idolized Bolet and saw him ( not me When I think of Bolet and Chopin I think of the B minor sonata and the Scherzi. He programmed the sonata in his Curtis graduation recital (in 1934) and played it regularly thereafter. He recorded it, shortly before his death, at his final recording session for Decca, in California, in 1989 (together with the B-flat minor sonata). These recordings have not been issued, so we are fortunate to have this performance. This is Bolet the grand seigneur Albert McGrigor is a publisher, journalist, writer, editor, scientist, and musician who studied conducting with Igor Markevitch. As a child, he met Jorge Bolet, the beginning of a lifelong friendship and, later, collaboration. He fondly recalls accompanying Bolet on concert tours throughout the United States, with Bolet and his personal manager, Tex Compton, sharing the driving of a Lincoln Continental and with a Baldwin grand piano in tow. Leonid Kogan A Tribute - by Roland Herrera Leonid made a public appearance in Kharkov at about this stage, after which it was decided to further Leonid's education in Moscow. At the age of 10 his family moved to Moscow, where he was able to study with Abram Yampolsky ( curiously no relation to Philip Yampolsky ) , himself a famous disciple of Auer. One day, when Kogan was 12 years old, Jacques Thibaud paid a visit to Moscow, and listened to Kogan play during his classes with Yampolsky. Thibaud was most impressed and predicted a great career for this young musician. Abram Yampolsky was soon to be so impressed and interested in the gifted boy, that he arranged for him to live at his home. There was daily guidance in addition to the classroom work, and Leonid progressed rapidly. Among early works he studied were Corelli's " La Folia " and Ries's " Perpetuum Mobile His violin was a Guarneri del Gesù dated 1726 ( although he also had another one dated 1733 ) , which Oistrakh acquired for him in the early 1960s. Kogan had played a Stradivarius in the early years of his career. His son, Pavel, born in 1952, became a famous violinist and conductor. His daughter, Nina, a pianist, accompanied him in later years. Sadly Leonid Kogan died prematurely, in a train, at the Mytischa railway station while on tour. He was only 58 years old. Kogan was made an Honoured Artist in 1955, a People's Artist of the USSR in 1964, and received the Lenin Prize in 1965.

Sein Studium absolvierte Grigory Gruzman zunächst an der Musikhochschule in Jerusalem bei Prof. Gregory Haimowsky und anschließend an der Musikhochschule Freiburg bei Prof. Vitalij Margulis, wo er sowohl die künstlerische Reifeprüfung als auch das Konzertexamen ablegte. Gruzman ist Preisträger der internationalen Klavierwettbewerbe von Monza und Vercelli (Italien).
