Oct. 14, 1985, Moscow, Russia, USSR), Soviet concert pianist admired for his superb technique, tonal control, and disciplined approach. Gilels began piano studies at the age of 6 and gave his first public concert in 1929 at the age of 13. In 1933 he gained top honors in the first All-Union Musicians Contest. After graduating from the Odessa Conservatory in 1935, he moved to Moscow for further study with Heinrich Neuhaus. In 1938 he won first prize at the Ysaÿe International Festival in Brussels and was appointed professor at the Moscow Conservatory. After World War II he toured outside the Soviet Union, and his debuts in New York City (1955) and London (1959) were greatly acclaimed. Although the works of Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and especially Ludwig van Beethoven came to form the core of his repertoire, Gilels also played those of Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, and Soviet composers.

Grieg: Lyric Pieces Emil Gilels' personal selection of favorite lyric pieces is one of his most praised and best recordings. The pianist obviously selected the pieces with which he felt the strongest identification, and he plays them lovingly, with sprightly rhythms and a rich, singing tone. Gilels was the one who identified himself as second to Sviatoslav Richter"If you think I'm something, wait until you hear Richter," he supposedly said. But this collection is just as beautiful in its way as Richter's lyric collections. Along with some of his Chopin playing, this Grieg set reminds us that Gilels was a major Romantic pianist. The Albeniz sonata (opens Disc One) sounds amazingly like Bach, yet nothing like Bach, in de Larrocha's hands. Somehow, she brings the meditative astringency of Bach to this Spanish music. No wild fandangos and flashy dancing, this is a very cerebral interpretation of a composer who perhaps would not be so well known if it weren't for de Larrocha's lifelong championing of Spanish composers. Joy of joy, she also includes the rarely-heard Cansons i Dansas of Federico Monpou, a composer who has a lot in... more info Fiery jewelry by the supreme Hispanic pianist.:

Recorded various venues between 1935 and December 1977 by Johnathan Bushrod Emil Gilels was born in 1916, a stocky, red-haired virtuoso of an order that only Russia seems able to produce. He remained a Soviet citizen, but unlike his contemporary Richter, in whose shadow he inevitably found himself (and that is still the case today) his appearances outside of the Eastern Bloc do not seem to have been unduly rationed, and from the 1950s onwards Gilels managed to build on his stunning American debut and appear regularly in the West until his premature death in 1985. The authorities used Gilels as a cultural ambassador, and Western audiences lapped it up. Concerts sold out quickly, and before long his reputation was such that he was getting invitations to play with the Berlin and Vienna orchestras. The concert appearances were often accompanied by recording sessions, initially with the top American orchestras, then solo piano repertory in the 1970s with DG, and from 1957 until his final concerts in Britain, a long running partnership with the BBC, both 'live' and in the studio.

A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. In his interpretation of Bach he does not save his muscles. We must remind ourselves that he is playing a fortepiano and not an organ. The change to the softer side of Mozart and Beethoven is welcome. Gilels was the most prominent piano playing artist in the former Soviet Union before Richter and the following demons started to sweep around the world from about 1960. He owned a seldom grip of his audience and even today many will claim him to be the foremost pianist of the century. He was a 'People's Artist' and received his Lenin Prize. In this production you will sit listening to his Debussy and Ravel and wonder how great his range was in emotions.

New Philharmonia Orchestra Gilels Summary in English This second compilation is Emil Gilels from the opposite side. In his playing on the first CD's we met his grande bravura , here he is more silent and emotional. He is playing Prokofiev with great care - especially the Visions fugitive - and we nearly think that it is not the same pianist we heard playing Bach. Poetry is shining in his performing of Medtner's Sonata reminiscenza . Emil Gilels cannot be in-between, it is either-or. If he does not choose three fff's there are three ppp's instead. The recording of the Figaro-fantasia dates from 1935, and in Liszt's Spanish Rhapsody he plays energic and with fiever. His version of the second piano concerto of Tchaikovsky - in the revised version by Siloti - is very different from Pletnev's. Where the latter use his youthful courage, Gilels tries to relax. The version is quite different from the original. The cello solo from the opening of the second movement has been taken away and partly replaced by an violin. In this way the concerto is felt more homogenous and not so filled with sweets.
