George and Ira Gershwin's contributions to our popular music, theater music and film music filled the 20th-century world. Throughout his unfortunately brief lifetime, George Gershwin composed many works for concert audiences. His close ties to the world of theater and commercial music gave these works a very personal and unique American flavor. The symposium featured the newly expanded classical repertoire of Mr. Gershwin which has catapulted his name into the sphere of major American classical composers. Alicia Zizzo's musicological research led to the subsequent publication of all the new works by Warner Brothers under the auspices of the Gershwin estate. These are the first new publications of George Gershwin's music in over half a century.

KICKIN’ THE CLOUDS AWAY: GERSHWIN AT THE PIANO Klavier Records K 77031 Liner Notes George Gershwin and the player piano 1915-1927 To augment his income and give his talent freer rein, Gershwin happily accepted offers in 1915 and 1916 from the Standard Music Roll Company and the Aeolian Company to make player piano rolls. He was paid at the rate of $35 for six rolls in a Saturday afternoon session, or five dollars each if he made fewer than six. (The average salary of Americans at the time was $15 per week, thus it’s not surprising that Gershwin’s immigrant parents didn’t protest his decision to leave school.) Naturally, his first rolls were improvisations of Remick’s and other Tin Pan Alley publishers’ tunes. The titles of these songs were sometimes quite ridiculous and reflected the carefree, Gatsby-era sentiment of the time: Arrah Go On I’m Gonna Go Back to Oregon When Verdi Plays the Hurdy-Gurdy , and You’re a Dog-Gone Dangerous Girl are three of the stranger titles among the early Gershwin rolls. George Essihos George Essihos lives in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He trained as a classical pianist but by the age of 40 had become fascinated by jazz. A chance meeting with Ahmad Jamal was the turning point in George's career, when he decided to re-invent himself as a jazz pianist. His style is unmistakable; he has a seemingly limitless capacity for improvisation and an amazingly active musical imagination. His concerts are fairly infrequent, so his devoted fans consider each to be a special event. This promted CBC Radio's Jurgen Gothe to say "George Essihos is the west coast's best kept jazz secret." In George's words: "My basic approach to jazz is classical: theme and variations, and use of extended patterns combined with impressionistic harmonies. Most players probably enter jazz through the blues, but many, including Bill Evans, Andre Previn, and Michel Petrucciani, started with intensive classical training. In jazz one is free to bend the melody and harmony to suit one's inventive whims. I don't believe in strict reference to the title or words of a song; these are usually added later anyway and they can limit one's imagination. So, I let the sounds carry me. If I were a singer perhaps I would think differently, but as a pianist I am searching for freedom and originality of expression." "Bill Evans has been my idol since the first time I heard his recordings in the early sixties.
