'Judaism is a musical religion' for pianist-singer Michael Feinstein
DAN PINE Bulletin Staff When Michael Feinstein needs to come up with a musical gem by the likes of George Gershwin, Cole Porter or Jerome Kern, all he has to do is head straight for his basement. That's where the world-renowned singer and pianist, who will soon perform in the Bay Area, stores his astounding collection of memorabilia from the Golden Age of American song. Among the prized possessions he keeps in the basement of his elegant L.A. home: autographed sheet music from Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jule Styne and other great songwriters; the original manuscript of Gershwin's piano variation on "But Not For Me"; and a 1924 score of "Rhapsody in Blue," signed by the composer. He's got tons more paintings, posters, knickknacks all of it priceless, and much of it actually bequeathed to him by Ira Gershwin (George's lyricist brother) and other master songwriters from Tin Pan Alley. Feinstein not only became one of their top musical interpreters over the years, in the case of several he also became a trusted friend.

The Rose Museum Exhibit at Carnegie Hall: A Virtual Tour
By John Ardoin T o celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gershwin's birth in September, 1998, Carnegie Hall opened a remarkable exhibition of memorabilia of the Gershwin brothers George and Ira in its Rose Museum. (The exhibition runs through October 4, 1998, and is open daily from 11:00 am to 4:30 p.m., except Wednesdays. Admission is free. For further information, call 212-903-9629.) The show's title, "Nice Work If You Can Get It," was borrowed from one of the brothers' best-known songs, and, as the catalogue published by Carnegie Hall observes, the two men were opposites in personality, lifestyle, and creative pursuits: "George and his brother Ira represent a unique and perhaps the most successful collaboration in American music. George the composer and pianist, with his musical ability, charismatic personality, energy and ambitious drive, became internationally famous while still in his early twenties and died tragically at the age of thirty-eight.

George Gershwin
26 September, 1898 - 11 July, 1937
George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York, September 26, 1898. He began his musical training at thirteen. At fifteen he left high school to work as a pianist and song-plugger for musical publishers. He was soon writing songs. "Swanee", introduced by Al Jolson, brought Gershwin his first real fame. But it was George and his older brother, Ira, who became the dominant Broadway songwriters to emerge during the 20s, creating a ceaseless flow of brisk, infectious rhythms and affectingly poignant ballads. Working together they fashioned the words to fit melodies with a "glove-like" fidelity. This extraordinary collaboration led to a succession of 22 musical comedies, among them Lady Be Good Oh, Kay! Funny Face Strike Up the Band Girl Crazy (1930) and Of Thee I Sing (1931) - the first musical comedy to win a Pulitzer Prize.

Cables' Vision
OJCCD-725-2 (Contemporary 14001)
When today's commentators speak of jazz's "in-betweeners," those not old enough to be legends yet too old to be young lions, pianist/composer George Cables could serve as Exhibit A. Cables was 35 years old, with a résumé including extensive service with the likes of Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, and Art Pepper, before he got his first chance to record under his own name for an American label on this 1979 session. He chose an all-star setting, with former bosses Hubbard and Hutcherson (each of whom contributed a tune), the multi-talented Ernie Watts (on soprano sax, tenor sax, and flute), and an even younger in-betweener, drummer Peter Erskine. Despite the musical success of this album, and the continuing insistence of the likes of Frank Morgan that Cables is their pianist of choice, Cables' Vision remains, like its creator, deserving of much wider recognition.

The Search for George Gershwin
Two Documentaries on CBC Radio
A hundred years after his birth, George Gershwin remains an elusive figure. The composer of Fascinatin' Rhythm Lady Be Good Someone to Watch Over Me , and The Man I Love defined the jazz age and the art of American popular song. But Rhapsody in Blue Concerto in F An American in Paris , and Porgy and Bess made him America's most popular composer of concert music too. His premature death at 38 left his music and his personal development a work in progress. Critics and biographers have been confounded ever since. Broadcaster Eitan Cornfield sets out in search of the real George Gershwin.

"The Contiguglias’ wonderfully vibrant Fantasy on Themes from ‘Porgy and Bess’ by the Australian pianist, Percy Grainger, triggered an unusual reaction from the normally conservative audience which attends these concerts. Their singing, shouting, strutting, clowning and dancing interpretation of this rich synopsis of the opera brought the crowd to its feet. That indicates to me that a good many people join me in wishing these double dynamos of pianism a speedy return to San Antonio.

Pianists Score with Concerto on ‘Porgy and Bess’ Themes
Seattle – In the beginning there was George Gershwin’s ‘Porgy and Bess,’ considered by many to be America’s first great opera. Using themes from ‘Porgy,’ the celebrated Australian-born pianist/composer Percy Grainger composed one of his greatest works for two pianos. Then, twin pianists, John and Richard Contiguglia, commissioned Tom Kochan to build a Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra based on Grainger’s ‘Porgy and Bess’ Fantasy . The Kochan version was performed here last weekend by the Contiguglias and the Seattle Symphony under guest conductor, Joel Revzen.

Politicians, artists, entertainers, and musicians gathered to mourn what was perhaps the greatest blow to American music in history: the unexpected and untimely death of George Gershwin at 38. Whether or not Gershwin was the greatest American composer will always be debated, but, beyond doubt, he was a most quintessential American composer. An unlikely musical genius, he was a high-school dropout who, by his own admission, was far more interested in roller skating and cutting school - and making fun of kids who played instruments - than in books or music. George Gershwin's story is the stuff of American romantic folklore. Unlikely Beginnings He was Morris and Rose Gershwin's second son, born in Brooklyn, New York, September 26, 1898. As a child George was usually in some kind of trouble. He despised reading and studying and instead spent his time outdoors playing and getting into fights. His family purchased a second-hand piano for elder son Ira when George was 12 years old, but it was George, not Ira, who began playing songs by ear immediately, prompting the family to invest in lessons.

1998 marked the 100th Anniversary of the birth of George Gerswhin. As a special tribute during this centenary year, Sony Classical is exploring the genius of the most-performed American composer of this century. We have mined our extensive vaults and unearthed recordings and performances we are proud to present in this special Masterworks Heritage release featuring twenty-eight of Gershwin's songs for Broadway shows and Hollywood films, and select classical scores in recordings made at the time of their first hearing, often by artists who premiered them. This collection will provide unique insight into the "original" sound of Gershwin as heard when these songs were new and Gershwin's popularity was immense, not least as a performer. In that role Gershwin himself is heard as pianist in four songs from his Oh, Kay!

Formerly the leader of the progressive rock group Genesis, Gabriel left that group after their album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway to pursue a solo career. In the years since then, he has crossed paths with Kate Bush several times. In 1979, Gabriel recruited Kate to provide backing vocals for the songs No Self Control and Games Without Frontiers on his third solo album, called Peter Gabriel. (The album bears the same title as its two predecessors due to Gabriel's wish that his albums be regarded as if they were successive issues of a magazine, although this idea was subsequently abandoned. To distinguish it from its predecessors, this album is sometimes called "Melt" or "Melting Face" in reference to the striking cover art.) Kate's exposure to Gabriel's method of composing with a Fairlight CMI and a drum machine profoundly influenced her own approach to songwriting. At around the same time, Gabriel appeared with Kate and Steve Harley at a memorial concert for Bill Duffield at the Hammersmith Odeon on 12 May 1979. At the end of the year, Gabriel made a guest appearance on the television special

This celebrated one-man play about the legendary American composer who "made a lady out of jazz" broke attendance records last summer and returns this year for three weeks only. George Gershwin Alone is the first in a series of musical-theatrical "imaginations" from actor, playwright, and pianist, Hershey Felder. Mr. Felder spent several years with Gershwin family members, biographers, and surviving intimates, poring over correspondence, original manuscripts, and personal belongings. Once the material had been assembled, Felder "imagined" George Gershwin, the man. Following a workshop attended by the Gershwin heirs, Mr. Felder received their blessing and go-ahead, being the first artist since the death of Gershwin to be allowed to play the composer in a major stage production.
